I remember when someone said Maxwell flighted the ball.. what a load, he was bowling Doherty Darts last night and Smith was atleast giving some loop (at times). He's a poor batsman and a poor bowler. Specialist fielder.

As for Wade coming in.. unfortunate that Haddin got injured because he's our best ODI keeper at the moment. Wade with a pathetic average of 22 after 24 innings and a strikerate of just 68...

Strange, I thought he was actually flighting it quite a bit. At least more than other times I've seen him bowl.

Might have to make a thorne89 thread.

I'd post in that.

I agree that Smith looked our best spinner by a fair way last night, which is concerning.

I find it very hard to muster up much faith in Doherty, I'm afraid.

I was at the ground and side on.. he wasn't flighting it.

Very concerning but then the non-tweaking Maxwell and Doherty arent much competition for a mostly non-tweaking leggie, are they? I actually don't mind Doherty as far as non-spinning spin bowlers go, he's got his game in order.

I don't really understand why any of our slow bowlers apart from Krejza (who loves half-trackers so negates his ability) are called 'spin' bowlers. Lyon can spin it a bit but he lapses into dart throwing a bit too often.

oddly enough hauritz has spent most of the bigbash really throwing it up and inviting the batsman to play a big shot.

hopes has responded by almost never using all of his 4 overs.

i'm surprised he hasn't been more in the firing line. i find it weird he's so inconsistent. you know, it's not really a bowling style that screams inconsistency

Beer should really be looked at to replace Doherty at some stage.

For some reason his ODD figures aren't that flattering at this stage. Hopefully he can rectify this soon and put his name right up there.

EDIT - I say that, but his economy rate is excellent. Really knows how to keep it tight in the colours.

eco. rate of 4.37 is pretty pleasing. if you're picking a defensive spinner (and there's nothing on offer but that), 1 for 43 off the 10 is about as good as you can get. particularly if you're often sticking in that area, rather than ranging from 2/20, 0/70 etc.

If today has taught us anything, it's that NSW bias is certainly a myth like this forum's rules would have you believe.
yeah smith was pretty unlucky to get dropped over maxwell. but it made sense.

I have read two separate articles, both stemming from Cricket Australia, which say Henriques is likely to make his debut this Friday. Seriously? Who does the research for these articles?
Exactly, can't they remember him getting picked on potential not on his form of averaging 10 with the bat and 90 with the ball...

Was I the only one that thought that Smith bowled pretty much as well as his ever bowled last game? Couldn't understand why Bailey took him off.

Yeah I was excited with how he bowled. He seemed to land everything and bowled plenty of variety.

Glad to read it. My opinion is, and has been for some time, that he could become a far better bowler than batsman; and his bowling was his best chance of playing Tests again. Not that one limited overs spell means anything in terms of the true game.
He was always willing to give the ball some air and try things, he lacked control and enough variety. Whereas his batting was always hit and miss and not looking likely to improve much, there has been something to work with on his bowling (unless he gets ordered to bowl flat and safe, which he may not be capable of).

Anyone read Ashley Mallet's article? He thinks Smith bowls too front on and his left arm falls away. He's right about that.

do they bowl?

Not that i'm aware of? Anyway thought it was pretty stupid having Smith & Maxwell batting at 5 & 6 the other night, maybe couldv'e had 1 but definately not 2 of them in the same side. I think if they gave Joe Burns the same opportunity that say Steve Smith has had he would turn into a really solid middle order player for us.

And they should get Shaun Marsh back in the side if they can, a player with the amount of shots & timing that he can generate it's quite extraordinary that he's still playing for WA. I know it's probably been a mixture of bad form & poor attitude that he hasn't cemented a spot in the OD side, but are there many better options out there?
