A brace of players is two players - a brace means two.

He could be referring to something that holds two or more players together. In this case, linking with hands. Would depend on exactly how he worded it.

He could also correctly argue that he was referring to the group as singular. For instance, a single pillar may be a 'brace' that holds a building up. You could then say that a group of pillars form a brace that holds a building up. Although it's not a very good way to say it, you could also say that they are 'a brace of pillars.' It just sounds stupid.

They're an affectionate lot down Alberton way.

Strange days when men can pat their teammates on the arsecheeks without a word, but hold someones hand and look out.

Retire Rucci Early

WHERE DO I SEND MY $5?

Sporting life

Feral fans go for the 'Crowbar'

Feral fans go for the 'Crowbar'

THE AFL season may still be three weeks away but in Adelaide, where some footy tragics are prone to acting strangely (often for no apparent reason), you would be excused for thinking it has started. Yep, here we are in early March and already some of the natives are restless, this time about the perceived ongoing bias shown by Michelangelo Rucci who, as chief football writer for the city's only daily newspaper, The Advertiser, probably has as much media clout as any sports scribe in the country. So restless, in fact, that they have undertaken an extraordinary campaign calling on Adelaide Crows supporters — all 600,000 of them — to contribute $1 a season for the next five years to a $3 million "Retire Rucci Early" fund so that he will "never be seen, heard or read again in Adelaide". Rucci's sin, of course, is that Crows fans insist he has a leaning towards Port Adelaide, the team he loved and grew up with as a child, although the man himself says such a passion has not once affected his judgement since Power was admitted to the AFL back in 1997. "This 'retire Rucci early' thing sounds pretty good to me," joked Rucci in his typical carefree style yesterday as he headed to Melbourne to cover the Comm Games. "I already own a place in Italy (his home country), so the three mill would be perfect. I might even open a bank account in the Isle of Man where they can send the money to. What's more, I won't be writing footy for the next couple of weeks, so you never know, those Crows fans might get a taste of not having me around so the fund might take off." Not that being in the firing line is new to Rucci. Last year, not only did steel bar-wielding fans smash his car outside AAMI Stadium, but his parents have also been subjected to death threats and once a campaign was launched urging his paper's advertisers to withdraw their support until he was sacked. "I have no idea why they dislike me," said Rucci. "This year I've even tipped the Crows to win the flag but still they carry on. I can't work them out." This campaign, though, is clearly growing legs. Said Rucci: "A few days back one of our breakfast radio shows asked listeners would they contribute to the fund. Some said they'd put up their $5 all in one whack and another bloke rang in and said he'd be happy to contribute his entire year's wages. That's how popular I am."

Re: Retire Rucci Early

No way I would waste any of my hard earned on him.

He is NOT a bad bloke to tell you truth...I have worked with him at the tiser though.

Anybody want me to stop posting on here?
I come cheap, couple of cartons a month would do the trick. :p

A couple of pints perhaps? :(

Re: Retire Rucci Early

I've sent my $5 to Steven Trigg and a note to say let's get rid of him quick rather than in five years

Re: Retire Rucci Early

Moderators,

Can we ban all Rucci threads from this board. Most threads about him show an unhealthy paranoia and obsession that reflects badly on contributors to this board

I Hate Rucci.

IF Michelangelo Rucci is unpopular with Adelaide fans — and, be assured, he is — heaven knows what they're going to think of him now. As we reported last month, Rucci, the chief football writer for Adelaide's only daily newspaper, The Advertiser, has been the subject of a campaign by Crows supporters who are trying to raise $3 million to send him into early retirement because they reckon he is biased in his writing towards Port Adelaide, the team he supported as a kid. Well, watch their anger boil over this week when they learn that Rucci has been pretty much responsible for this week's suspension of Adelaide star midfielder Brett Burton being increased from one game to two, meaning that, unless he successfully contests at his tribunal hearing tonight, he will miss the round six Adelaide Showdown against Port. It all happened after the AFL sent a release to all media outlets on Monday saying Burton had been charged with a level three striking offence against Fremantle's Steven Dodd and "due to an existing good record" could accept a one-match suspension. Hang on, said Rucci, who immediately called the AFL to point out that "the Birdman" had 70.31 carry-over points from an incident involving Richmond's Chris Hyde last year. Quite right, said the AFL after re-checking their records, and immediately changed the penalty to two games. "I can imagine what the Crows fans are thinking now," Rucci told us yesterday. "Well, as I've told them before, $3 million and I go. If they can manage to raise the cash I'll be happy to take it. But don't blame all this on me. The point is, if Burton had kept his hands down and (AFL footy operations manager) Adrian Anderson had kept his records up, this would not have been an issue."

Vendetta against us aside, this is the bit that is important.

Who cares?

Read the last line again. FFS if Brett Burton didn’t do the stupid thing none of this would matter, end of story.

It is quite pathetic and if it was a Port player, I am sure that he wouldn't be so forthcoming with the information.

I agree that the Rucci thing arises every year, but he is equally as pathetic.
I think who ever posted this thread isn't aware that Rucci is NOT the only one that was on the phone to the AFL about this. In fact a few other journalists and a couple of clubs (no prizes for guessing) were on the phone to AFL as soon as they realesed Burton's initial penalty. Its just because Rucci is not liked around these parts that he will cop all the blame when it fact he wasn't the first nor the last to ring the AFL about it.

This Rucci obesession is becoming very petty.

I don't see anyone else "bragging" about it.

Don't fall for the odd sniper on here who has a go at people criticizing Rucci for his anti-Crows bias, and his pro-Port Adelaide bias Stiffy.

If Rucci sh its people off, they are entitled to express that, and god knows he does enough to do just that.

Just read the 'tiser this morning. A whole column devoted by Rucci arguing that Burton's appeal should be unsuccessful.

On the other hand Wakelin's offence and possible citing wasn't even mentioned by Rucci in yesterday's Advertiser, and only gets a couple of lines in today's rag now that he has been suspended.

Then another whole column devoted to why Port should be able to wear their prison bar heritage guernsey, even they DID agree not to wear it for 5 years after wearing it in 2003 against Carlton. Now Rucci says no-one can find such an agreement, arguing that they only agreed not to wear it against Collingwood, which is a blatant bloody lie!! it was a general agreement that they wouldn't wear the prison bar guernsey for 5 years full stop - and he knows it.

Add to that his piece about the father son rule arguing that the new clubs should not have father/son rules - stiff cheddar that it's not fair and equal - and specific reference to Gibbs, plus his dig at Triggy in another little piece, and it's classic Rucci rubbish all round.

He deserves criticism, so for those who don't want to, your silence is sufficient.

Attacking or belittling those who can't stand the two faced rodent is not appropriate IMO.

I am not falling for anything but continual snipes are tiring. I have never said that Rucci doesn't deserve the crap because he does but some people around here are sounding like broken records. Every week without a miss there is a "Rucci is crap" thread. Its just flogging a dead horse.

As I said before the more you poke a stick into the sh|t the more it stink. The more people get stuck into Rucci the more he will do things to provoke them. Its that simple. Rucci craves attention and boy is he getting it from people who care more about what he writes thanothe rmore pressing issues at hand.
