Only if we have to the room to pay him.

I suspect Hawthorn have more cap space than us because of the large number of draft picks they've had the last two years.

It sounds as if they will offer Thornton huge dollars in year one to price everyone else out, and then a lesser amount in year two.

Spot on. As prediced, theyre looking at 'front ending' their contract to entice him as reported on Ch 10 earlier this evening.

You have got to love this, front ending contract to get around other clubs picking them up. Legalised draft tampering comes to mind lol

Much like the Saints cutting in on Everitt.

how can we not have room in our salary cap when last and this year we have thrown bucket loads at del santo the ritsechelli. we dont have anyone commands big buck and we're going to get rid of soloman plus henneman, bolton hopefully.

How can we be stuggling for cap space, sure we have Lloyd, lucas Hird and Fletcher on big $. But 2 are on the veterans list (Hird and Fletch?) Soloman may have been on a bit and he looks like going, or if he stays wont be on much. JJ is either going or wont be on as much as he was. Who is all our money going to?

Sorry about writing almost the same post as above- must have beat me by a few seconds.

Reading between the lines it looks as if Thornton might play for massive dollars in 2007 and bugger all in 2008.

If Thornton puts $600,000 on his head we might battle to fit that in.

Our best bet of getting him, is still to find a way of making him want to come to Essendon.

Solly going will help our cause, but we still haven't signed up McPhee. We should be able to fit him in, but everyone has a limit.

Dees cool on Johnson

Melbourne recruiting and list general manager Craig Cameron says the club won't be enticing dual Essendon best-and-fairest winner Jason Johnson to the Demons during this year's trade period.

Speculation had mounted that Johnson could join the Demons via this week's exchange period, but Cameron said Melbourne was not looking to recruit the ball-winner on the opening day of the trade week at Telstra Dome on Monday.

"No we're not looking at Jason Johnson," Cameron said.

As for other potential trades, Cameron said there was little action at this stage for Melbourne.

"There's been nothing for us," Cameron said.

"It's been a pretty stock standard day to be honest. There wasn't much on the go for us.

"The way we've approached trade week is that it is a chance for us to improve our list, but we'll only do trades if that's what we'll think we'll do."

Cameron said there hadn't been much interest from other clubs attempting to secure any Demons.

"Not a great deal, I don't think - it's only the first day and people are just jostling for position and finding out what's happening really," Cameron said.

Good News :D
Sign him up bombers

As someone suggested, legal trade tampering. Loads of pressure on his shoulders though..and the club should their finances decline in the future, ala Carlton and Kouta

Why would any club (Kangaroos/Fremantle excluded) do anything but that?

we could pick up selwood or luenburg.

Why would we want another ruckman? We have signed Laycock for two years, added to Hille, Ryder AND Cartledge. Another ruckmen would jsut be a waste!

yes very true, but hearing how good this kid is meant to be i think he may be too good to pass up, plus i really do think cartiledge will be delisted this year

Essendon have offered pick 20 for Thornton but the arrogant prick does not want to come to Essendon

I suspect he'll be with us for at least the next couple of years.

The fact we haven't re-signed him must be a worry though. i hope we keep him as we have put all the development time into him and are just about to cash in on his obvious talent.
