Official Draft Selections

Took them an eternity to announce their last selection in Archibald. Wonder if they were argueing about youth or recycled.
Archibald looks like a bit of a speculative punt as Sipthorp was last year. Fingers crossed he does OK.

My only question mark is the size (weight) of a few of these youngsters - they are fairly lightweight and our record of building up bodies is poor IMHO.

Going by an article in the Age today, Gilmour has already grown 8cm and put on 10kg since yesterday - should be a monster by the first round. :D

On the negative side, Hartigan seems to have lost a bit of weight and Tuck appears to have shrunk 5 cm. :(

Who your team picked

RICHMOND
21 - Alex Gilmour (Tassie Mariners) 17, 188cms, 78kgs
Lightly-built onballer with good skills who’s played senior football since he was 13. One of the youngest draftees – only eligible by one day.Good at ground level, good with his hands in close and smart in getting his handballs away but needs to become stronger and more mature.

37 - Tom Roach (Oakleigh Chargers) 18, 182cms, 73kgs
Won’t be a key forward like father Michael (200 games, 607 goals), but is a developing midfielder/on-baller who has plenty of dash and does not mind taking opponents on.

53 - Daniel Jackson (Oakleigh Chargers) 17, 186cms, 87kgs
Athletic medium forward who played seven TAC Cup games this year.

64 - Shane Morrison (Brisbane Lions) 22, 193cm, 91kg
Brisbane Lions father-son recruit who lacks a yard of pace and consequently found it hard to crack a spot in the game’s most powerful line-up. Only player to put a price on his head.

70 - Brent Hartigan (Calder Cannons) 18, 177cms, 68kgs
Defender/midfielder who reads the play well and was the Cannons’ best and fairest in a premiership year.

73 - Shane Tuck (West Adelaide) 21, 185cm, 75kg
Son of former Hawk great who struggled with a heart condition in a stint at Glenferrie, before relaunching his career his career under Shaun Rehn in the SANFL.

76 - Andrew Raines (Southport) 17, 179cm, 70kg
Son of Geoff. Lightly built, project player. Former Queensland junior representative from the same club that produced Nick Reiwoldt.

79 - Simon Fletcher (Carlton) 25, 188cm, 74kg
Before joining the Blues, Fletcher spent two years on Geelong’s list before being picked up on Carlton’s rookie list in 1998. Back in the market after 84 games in five seasons, including 11 in 2003.

81 - Kyle Archibald (Belconnen) 17, 190cms, 86kgs
Hard-working forward who has a good leap and enjoys a physical game. Member of the AIS-AFL Academy in 2003 and kicked two goals for NSW in game three of the under-18 national titles.

82, 83 - pass

The club says
"This was a kids draft and we had to get as many kids as we could, and a number won’t be ready to play for a couple of years. But there was a need for Danny (Frawley) to have enough senior blokes who could play straight away, that’s why Morrison and Fletcher were picked, and even Shane Tuck to a lesser degree (because) he has played senior football for West Adelaide. And obviously we had to get a couple of talls through the door."
Greg Beck, Richmond recruiting manager

The Sunday Age says
The Tigers had more picks than is considered ideal (nine), none of them inside the top 20. Not surprisingly, they combined a selection of kids with a group of more seasoned recycled players headed by Morrison. Tuck is an interesting choice and the Raines name will please the Tiger faithful.
