Some player's predictions on Twitter:

Bugg and Dyson: 1. Whitfield, 2. O'Rourke, 3. Plowman
Treloar: 1. Whitfield, 2. Toumpas, 3. Wines
Tomlinson wants Jaksch

I'd be with Treloar. Only reason you'd pass over Toumpas and Wines is because GWS have a plethora of young mids in their mould. Looks like they might go for the best talent on a "needs" basis.... even then....

Well, our backline is sorted. The only position on the field I am worried about is ruck. I think everything is well sorted now.

I think no Grundy means we will draft Tippett.

I would have preferred Membrey at 27 I think.

I wouldn't have minded Tim O'Brien at 27 myself but Stewart is well credentialled

Colquhoun from SA did not get picked up, might be a nice rookie selection

Herald Sun: Greater Western Sydney selects Lachie Whitfield as No.1 draft pick
MELBOURNE'S draft dreams were granted when Greater Western Sydney selected three Victorian mates ahead of South Australian wingman Jimmy Toumpas.

The Giants added to their gluttony of talent, securing prized No.1 pick Lachie Whitfield and two best friends from the Calder Cannons –- slick midfielder Jono O'Rourke and rebounding defender Lachie Plowman.

...

While GWS played down the "friendship factor", it is another known recruiting tool in the club's bid to help safeguard its stable of stars from homesickness and poaching attempts from Victorian rivals.

...

After building their engine room with contested ball-winners last year, the Giants added a coat of polish with Whitfield and O'Rourke boasting elite speed and kicking skills.

The Age: Giants usher in new blood with top picks
EVERY AFL club has spent more than two years waiting for Lachie Whitfield to become old enough. Whitfield's long wait ended too, the teenager on his way to Greater Western Sydney as the No. 1 draft pick.

...

Whitfield, a classy midfielder, was called ahead of midfielder Jono O'Rourke and key defender Lachie Plowman, the Giants opting for three Victorians with the opening three selections.

Whitfield has starred for Vic Country for the past two years and is a versatile player the Giants will be able to use in many parts of the ground, primarily through the midfield but also in the forward line or off half-back.

''It's very humbling, something that I hold dear to me, to be the No. 1 selection,'' said Whitfield, who will not feel completely like a fish out of water when he moves to Sydney next week, having played junior football with many of the Giants' 2012 debutants.

The Giants' work wasn't done there. With picks 12 and 14 the AFL's newest club dominated the front part of the draft for a second consecutive year, and added a key forward and key back in Kristian Jaksch and Aidan Corr with those fourth and fifth picks. GWS then pulled a minor surprise, grabbing James Stewart, the son of former Collingwood player Craig. The Magpies had access to Stewart as a father-son pick in 2012 but opted against nominating the athletic key forward.

More and more teams are not willing to invest a first rounder in 4 years of a ruckman's development, instead choosing to let other clubs develop them and ship a first rounder for one at a later date. Free Agency will add another element to this scavenger ruck strategy.

Sydney (Mumford), Hawthorn (Hale), Adelaide (Jacobs), Collingwood (Jolly). None of the top four sides this year drafted their no.1.

Giles is your incumbent now for a few seasons and Phillips is obviously rated. For now you will get by with using the rookie draft (which has uncovered some great ruckmen anyway) to add ruck depth.

There has only been 2 years since 2000 where a ruckmen hasn't gone top 10... I think this year is just a one off

This is a rough list, not all necessarily ruckmen, but I can see why we plan on trading one in rather than drafting a Longer or a Grundy in the top 10:

2000: Kosi, Angwin
2001: Hale (traded)
2002: McIntosh (traded), Laycock
2003: none
2004: Meesen (traded
2005: Ryder, Clark (traded)
2006: Leuenberger
2007: Kreuzer, McEvoy
2008: Naitanui, Vickery
2009: none
2010: Gorringe
2011: Longer
2012: none
