Official GIANTS draft & PSD/Rookie Draft thread

Coltsstriker, it's a valid question you ask and something of an issue for us.

With some kids, they have tight knit families, are possibly a bit spoilt or immature or simply don't like the idea of travelling. These kids are a huge risk, you do hope some mature, and maybe feel different after they settle, make friends and find freedom. But some just never will and recruiting them is a waste of time.

The way things are most kids who don't settle just do their 2 years, refuse to re-sign and then leave.

It is one of the major disadvantages teams like Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast and GWS face as they can't rely on getting much homegrown talent in the draft.

Knowing what I know and what we will lose next year, I think we have to have a zero tolerance rule to this for the time being. If Garlett feels like that, then good luck to him, somebody else can risk him. Though he's probably only being honest he is in fact tampering with the draft, the same way kids that sabotage interviews do the same thing.

It is an imperfect system, but fortunately a lot of kids are happy to get on a list and be given an opportunity.

I say draft the best kid that is happy to play for you.

Passing on Toumpas would be a grave mistake, I sincerely hope this is not true
I doubt very much they will.... but if they do it could be at the expense of the Bulldogs. He'll be back in SA in two years. You mark my words :) The Giants saw this with Wingard last year and it's much more the case with Toumpas. Grundy is a much safer bet from SA. Having said that I won't complain if Grundy lands in our lap :)

Wicky I don't know the kid from a bar of soap but everything I've seen written about him suggests he is an utter professional and a hard worker that his team mates love.

Perhaps he'd be like Stave Coniglio who everybody thought would be back in WA in 12 months but has now extended his stay here for another couple of years such is his love for Sydney.

The few interviews ive seen of Toumpas he looks a big personality. I reckon Jimmy would be super popular and would end up loving the place as he's an extrovert like Cogs. It's the shyer introverts I worry about.

So the Herald Sun has there phantom draft has us taking Whitfield, Toumpas & Plowman. But all the latest talk from every where else has been that we won't take Toumpas but will instead take Menzel but as they say time will tell. So it would seem that both Whitfield and Plowman are locks at this stage with that 3rd spot still up in the air. Anyway here is the Herald Suns Phantom draft

RUCKS: Jonathan Giles, Andrew Phillips, Tom Downie.
DRAFT DAY: With five of the first 14 selections, the Giants will make draft day all about them for a second year running. Their choices will shape much of what happens in the first round, and they are still pondering some interesting options. Lachie Whitfield is a lock at No. 1, but from there they have some big decisions to make. Four players seem to be in the mix for picks 2 and 3 - utility Troy Menzel, skilful onballer Jono O'Rourke, defender Lachie Plowman and wingman Jimmy Toumpas. If they want Menzel, the Giants will need to pick him early; he most likely won't be there at 12. Having undergone LARS surgery at the age of 16, he is a risky pick considering he his obvious knee problems. Not all clubs could take the punt, but given the Giants have so many first-rounders tucked away, his knee is not such a huge deal. Menzel could easily end up the best player in the draft. Plowman is the pick of the key backs, but he seems a slight chance to get to 12. If he doesn't, the Giants could grab Aidan Corr, another competitive, close-checking backman, instead, and not miss out too much. At pick 14, Brodie Grundy would be one of the draft's big bargains if available. Port Adelaide might choose the big, aggressive ruckman at pick 7 but if they don't, he could slide some way.

Not sure what the team will do re our top 3 picks but I have faith they will do a good job.

One player I do not want under any circumstances is Dayle Garlett. Heard nothing but bad things about this bloke and just saw his Instagram profile which is very ordinary. This bloke is not needed.

This is getting around, something about drinking and a dead kangaroo?:eek:

btw I hope you guys don't pick Tippett but for your sake I hope you don't pass on Toumpas, I think Plowmann would be a chance at pick 12 and you could probably find a similar type (Jaksch, Corr, Clurey) if he is picked before that.

O'Rourke possibly still in the mix with Toumpas, Plowman, Menzel at #2 and #3.

@TFoenander
Little whisper that GWS may take O'Rourke & Plowman with picks 2 & 3. Would leave Dees with an interesting choice: Toumpas or Wines at 4?

That would leave Wines, Toumpas, Grundy or Menzel for Port at pick 7 :) win win

Can't see Wines or Toumpas at 7. Still think GWS will take him at two or three

Giants recruiting manager Stephen Silvagni said the club had enough ruckmen not to have to recruit a young tall in case Tippett falls through its fingers.

"We have got Jonathan Giles, Andrew Phillips, Tom Downie, and Setanta (O'hAilpin) who can play that position so we feel as though we have enough ruckmen on our list," Silvagni said.

I think not drafting Grundy is in the bag.

The AFL.com phantom draft has us getting:

1. Greater Western Sydney - Lachie Whitfield
2. Greater Western Sydney - Jonathan O'Rourke
3. Greater Western Sydney - Lachie Plowman

12. Greater Western Sydney - Aidan Corr

14. Greater Western Sydney - Brodie Grundy
28. Greater Western Sydney - Tim Broomhead

I think not drafting Grundy is in the bag.

That quote definitely seems damming but honestly if he is there at 14 and we don't take him it would be a pretty big call.

We're not talking about a Dayle Garlett type here, Grundy is a cleanskin, a brainiac that got 92.6 or so in his tertiary entrance, the guy eats sleeps and breathes footy and I think a zero % flight risk.

Setanta is just a stop gap option, Phillips has shown signs but still a long way off being a star and Downie again is a development kid that cost nothing and can go either way.

If he's there at 14 we must pounce.

You would think so. Even at 12.

Hundreds of phone calls later, here is how it stands: GWS set to take Whitfield, O'Rourke & Plowman in that order. Dees Toumpas. #AFLDraft

And the herald sun also seeing the top 3 picks the same

But the Herald Sun can reveal GWS will instead nab devastating outside midfield stars Lachie Whitfield and Jono O'Rourke with its first two picks before calling the name of key defender Lachie Plowman at No.3.

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...-draft-selection/story-e6frexx0-1226520611578

And just recently Gerard Healy stated on 3aw that according to his sources we have told Whitfield Plowman and O'Rourke they will be our first 3 picks.

So its looking very likely that this will be our top 3 picks, would think those selections would shake the order up a bit so our pick 12/14 could get interesting.

That's a massive spanner in the works and I like that it probably means that Grundy will fall to us at 12/14 as well. Also great if we get Plowman. This is a bigger test for SOS than last years draft.

Now... Have to find out about this O'Rourke character...
