Official GIANTS draft & PSD/Rookie Draft thread

We don't even know if this bloke wants to play for us and even if he does he will miss a fair bit of season 1 after getting deregistered.

The club will definitely know the first part prior to the draft. The second part should hopefully be known before the draft, if the AFL is planning on sanctioning Adelaide for this year's draft.

Just watching the Jono Rourke Pick Me video and he looks pretty keen to stay in Melbourne. These days most of the kids play with a straight bat when asked about the prospect of staying home or moving interstate but O'Rourke made it pretty clear he'd like to stay in Melbourne and would be happy to be taken by the Western Bulldogs. This has Josh Caddy written all over it...be afraid SOS, be very afraid!!

Just quietly he looks great in the video, seems to have a lot of time and speed. When he builds his body he should become a very good player.

Giants can afford to take risks with injuries but they should keep away from these types.

Just as it seemed we were moving away from Grundy in the top 3 - Brogan is delisted - which you'd have to think has draft implications for either Grundy or Tippett.

Being 6 years younger than Giles, Grundy would have ample time to develop into his role with Giles still taking the majority of the ruck workload.

That said, there's also the notion which remains that we'll trade for an established ruck when we're starting to make an assault on the top 8.

On the back of the Herald article having us pick Plowman at No.3 just had the following twitter correspondence with Emma Quayle:

@emmasqThe herald sun are claiming that@GWS_Giantsare likely to use pick 3 on Plowman is that how you see it as well?

Emma Quayle@emmasq
@BigFootyGIANTSit's a chance. So is Menzel, who they've just re-interviewed. 2+ 3 should come from toumpas, Menzel, o'rourke & plowman.

Interestingly she also tweeted after that if Port pass on Grundy at #7 he might end up at Giant at #12/#14.

Although touted as one of the Giants' first three selections for most of the year, the club seems likely to ignore Grundy and pick midfielders Lachie Whitfield and Jimmy Toumpas, and defender Lachie Plowman, with its opening picks.

South Australian Troy Menzel is also a chance to be picked at No.3, with some recruiters believing it's a toss of the coin whether Menzel or Plowman end up as the Giants' third selection.

Much as I like the idea of Menzel, I'm also a Geelong member and really want to see the brothers together down at Kardinia Park so I'd pick Plowman.

Just pouring through the Draft videos on Draft Machine and can't help but be impressed by two blokes in particular, Kristian Jaksch and Ben Kennedy.

Jaksch looks like he has the best set of hands and marking in the draft. When I watch his highlights he dead set reminds me of Sam Reid. If we got him we'd obviously look at playing him defence as we are well served up forward but this kid seems quite adept as a forward as well.

Kennedy is only knee high to a grass hopper but looks electric around the park and seems to find a bit of the ball. He's a cheeky little bugger and I reckon would really compliment our squad

Any chance we look at these guys at 12 and 14?? Haven't heard either name linked to us but not sure why??

Inside Football had Jaksch at #11 and Kennedy at #15, so it seems they'll be around the mark at our second pair of picks.

With so much focus around the top three, especially from media types in recent days, not a lot has been said of these picks. I like Clurey there as a defender, going by the mocks Jaksch is probably rated just ahead of him and another name being mentioned is Aidan Corr whose stocks have risen into the top 15.

If we take Plowman at #3, keep an eye out for Corr at #12/#14, this is something which might fit the roommate strategy from last year: http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/150982/default.aspx

Don't think you'll take Jaksch, his marking would be wasted down back. Kennedy a big chance at 14, you only really have Smith for that small forward role.

Juzzo feel free to shoot me down as I'm just an enthusiastic noob but when I watch Sam Reid from Sydney I often think he would be an awesome defender like his big brother is, as both have beautiful clean hands. I figure Sydney use him up forward as they don't really have a presence there and are well served down back and are persevering despite his patchy form and poor goal kicking.

For us, we are very well served up front but severely deficient down back where I just figured Jaksch at 194cms and a good mark would be a good fit.

I guess if we take Plowman at 3 we probably will be looking for more an impact player at 12 or 14, maybe a Garner or a Gartlett??

Oh I agree defense should be your number 1 priority at the moment. Sounds like you're going to take Plowman at 3, Jaksch will probably be gone by 12 anyway. A few people are even saying you might look at Corr at 14.

Normally I'd say you can't have too many good mids but it's starting to look that way for GWS! That's why I think they'll be looking for variety outside Toumpas and Whitfield. 2 key defenders and a small forward so maybe another back flanker? Someone like Thurlow, Wright or even Broomhead.

Callum Twomey@AFL_CalTwomey
With Menzel and Plowman firming for GWS early, Toumpas could end up at Melbourne. Feel like Demons would have him ahead of Wines. #AFLDraft

Could make things interesting with our pick 12 & 14 with a few players sliding down the order if we take both Plowman and Menzel.

Whats your dream first choice pick to suit your club?
During the year the boys asked dayle garlett what team would you like to play afl for. he replied,
well i would preffer and rather not play footy or live in queensland, adelaide ,sydney with the new teams and the other teams like
the cats, tigers, freo, north melb, blues he cant see himself playing for them as not a fan of them growing up so hopefully not them teams will be sweet. but the the rest is ok, so guys would you rather a player like vlastuin, jasksch, kennedy, clurey, stringer ect that are keen to play with pride as there is so many great kids around ?
