Coltsstriker, it's a valid question you ask and something of an issue for us.
With some kids, they have tight knit families, are possibly a bit spoilt or immature or simply don't like the idea of travelling. These kids are a huge risk, you do hope some mature, and maybe feel different after they settle, make friends and find freedom. But some just never will and recruiting them is a waste of time.
The way things are most kids who don't settle just do their 2 years, refuse to re-sign and then leave.
It is one of the major disadvantages teams like Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast and GWS face as they can't rely on getting much homegrown talent in the draft.
Knowing what I know and what we will lose next year, I think we have to have a zero tolerance rule to this for the time being. If Garlett feels like that, then good luck to him, somebody else can risk him. Though he's probably only being honest he is in fact tampering with the draft, the same way kids that sabotage interviews do the same thing.
It is an imperfect system, but fortunately a lot of kids are happy to get on a list and be given an opportunity.
I say draft the best kid that is happy to play for you.

The Giants saw this with Wingard last year and it's much more the case with Toumpas. Grundy is a much safer bet from SA. Having said that I won't complain if Grundy lands in our lap
