I still think the young bloke will be back. A year or two in the real world is what a lot of youngsters need to help them work out where there real talents are.
If we see him in the hoops at 25-26 it will be something to watch. Remember please, some of us remember having seen his dad struggle with exactly the same issues.

You are right is saying that the off-spring of manic depressives are more likely to develop similar tendencies, but that doesn't make it genetic. Using vague terminology like 'inheritance' is meaningless in medical terminology.

My critique of Nathan is based upon personal experience, I'm calling him lazy because I've been there and (not) done that. I'm also calling him a religious nut, because he is a religious nut! Please explain the prejudice?

For what I think, I really don't think that he is lost to the cats. He may decide to 'retire' in January, just like his dad did. He may not be at the club at all in 08, but he'll still be on the books and I'm confident that just like his brother found out last summer, the extra work is worth it and he will be back.

All I have to say is I TOLD YOU SO. The kid was never going to make it. His name and talent got him so far but when it came to the crunch... he walks. We can assume that considering it his 4th season at the club in '08, he was told to pick up the pace, get fit, get strong and work your backside off basically. To hard? It seems so.
What happened to the "he's gonna be a star", "I have no doubt he will be a champion"... blah, blah, blah...

Sorry to get up on the high horse but I've seen this coming for a long, long time and have been told I'm wrong for 2 years or so. SUCK IT UP all you people that said I was wrong. He doesn't have what it takes. You can't force someone to be a professional athlete... simple. He was carried all year in '07 and struggled to perform in the highest scoring and most dominant team we have seen for a long time.

Maybe I should go and drag out posts from the past to shove in your faces, like many of you love to do so much with the "i told you so" attached. Pfft.. nah, no point. You all know who you are... and you know that I was always right.

Now why is it no surprise to see you on this thread, heck it must have been frustrating for you during the season when the Cats were travelling so well and you had nobody to put the boots into, which is why you disappeared for so long no doubt.

Can't say I blame you for blowing up your own tyres here, because although it's no foregone conclusion yet, this is one time when you "may" actually be right, and for you that must be cause for celebration, seeing as how every other opinion you've put forward with regard to individual players has turned out to be wrong.

So lap it up mate, this "could" be your moment in the sun, the time when you finally stop batting zero.

Oh yeah, and by all means drag out some old posts, see if you can find the ones about Enright, Corey, Harley, Mackie, Gaz and Chappie or anyone else you've knocked [ incorrectly ] in the past, they should make good reading.

How about we all stop judging the guy and accept any choices he decides to make. If anything I would expect you to all support him in whatever decision he makes. The opinions formed here are more a reflection of the individuals character than any of the choices Nathan makes.

You're whole argument seems to be that I have mentioned religion ergo I must be prejudiced. If I had a dig at one or many of these players it was for good reason, and I'll stand by it. For example, I did have a crack at Harley because I thought he was brought into the side to early.. and I'll stand by that. Luckily for him a winning team allowed him to regain his form in the seniors. Enright is another who I think is overrated.. because he doesn't pick up a man, + wins very, very low ratio of contested footy, + doesn't hurt the opposition with his disposal, so what?? How was I "wrong"? I still stand by those two opinions now. They are not perfect players and whenever I say something that isn't 100% positive you all start crying about it. Of course everyone has a licesnse to piss on Byrnes, Playfair, Gardiner etc...

You all come onto the Geelong board and think the players are a protected species. I contribute to the players salaries, I'm allowed to have a stab at whoever the hell I want. I'm just glad I see the game with 2 eyes rather than one, even though I am a passionate cats fan...

You say what you want, no doubt about that as your right and often I tend to find you amusing, but if people perceive it to always be in the negative...arent they just drawing a natural conclusion? This is a forum...its not just a sounding board for irate supporters.

Having won the coach's award twice, the kid is obviously rated by them.

In the end of the day if a bloke (regardless of his last name) doesn't have the passion to bleed for the jumper then we are better off without him in the team.

The club took a massive risk when they lured him to GFC, now it looks like what we all wished wouldn't happen may well come true.

The positives are big tommahawk will be champing at the bit to rise to the next level and help fill the void. Blokes like Longeran all of a sudden have a chance to go forward and really add something in 2008.

As good as Nath has been he has hardly been a game breaker. I'm disappointed that if he does leave we'll always be wondering how good the bloke could have been, but in the end it's personal choice that we all have to respect.

The same tired old excuses are getting pretty stale by now mate, whenever your old posts are mentioned you say the same thing .....'Harley was brought back to quickly'... 'Enright wins low ratio of contested footy'... and there's nothing wrong with either of those opinions, but you conveniently "forget" to mention the rest of the diatribe you carried on with at the time, that Harley could only play key position and would be a passenger for the rest of the year [ wrong ] Enright is a squib who should be used as trade bait etc.etc. [ wrong ]

The same sort of over the top and totally incorrect statements were also made about the other players mentioned; and let's have a look at these two statements of yours .... Whether you make these sort of statements just because you like the notoriety it brings, which I kinda hope is the reason because I'd hate to think anybody could be wrong almost 100% of the time, or because they're your true opinions I have no idea, but as long as you keep making them you have to expect others to challenge you on them.

Well said Ling Sting. Its positives that are needed. Lets face facts the - cats are in great position to have another serious tilt at the flag. Hawkins Gamble Lonergan and Co. will now have their chance. Let Nathan have his time away- forever if need be. I agree Ling Sting he is much better out of the game if he has no passion because this lets another kid with passion step up. Maybe one day Nathan will realise what he has or maybe not.

What he does have is a premiership medal and three goals in a granny. I'd settle for that.

Whether you use the dictionary definition that you have supplied, or more importantly, the broader societal understanding of the term 'religious nut'; either way it is derogatory. It's not the same as simply calling someone 'nuts'. There is NO colloquial understanding of that term that is even neutral, yet alone positive.

Now, OK, I accept that this may not have been your intention; and to that extent I think this exchange has gotten out of hand. But the comparison of 'footy nut' with 'religious nut' is stretching it a little. The connotations of the later are a little more severe.

Garbage. I'm one of the more cynical (and critical) supporters on here, but I'm quite happy to credit the team and individual players when they deserve it. 12 months ago I was leading the charge in getting rid of Thompson. But right now I am very, very pleased to have been proven completely and utterly wrong. I also slagged off Charlie Gardiner and Henry Playfair relentlessly too. Now they're both gone, but strangely enough, I don't take special pride in their downfall. In fact I spoke to both of them at the Best and Fairest after party and wished them all the best whatever happened.

You might say you contribute to the player's salaries, I'd argue that you purchase admission to a game of football (like all of us do). You are absolutely entitled to your opinion, and I welcome it. But it doesn't mean it's gospel.

I have a question - When Nathan Ablett kicked 2 goals in a minute in the Grand Final, were you elated or sad?

I've freely criticised Shannon Byrnes, but I was happy to see him contribute on the big day. I've criticised Josh Hunt, but was rapt to see him obliterate Brett Ebert, and in my view remove any doubts about his ability or temperament. I had doubts about Harley too, but week after week I could see why they showed faith in him. As cynical as I am, even I took pleasure in winning 19 out of 20 games, including the flag. I'm strange like that.

So ultimately, Nathan Ablett may not play again for us. Personally I think he needs to come to his senses, as he has a rare talent for football, which we've only seen a glimmer of. Either way I'm not going to sprout how insightful I am to have spotted any character flaws 3 years ago. Even I'm not that petty and vindictive.

He played in round 1, got a bath by Johnson.. then I believe he may have gotten injured before returning after we had lost to Hawthorn maybe?? Either way, he was there when we were 2-3 and he wasn't the best option in defense at that stage. We had other options who were match fit. Lets be honest here, he came back because he was captain... Harley without captaincy wouldn't have played until he regained form in the VFL.

I'm not going to comment on 1 game. You are just plain wrong about Enright doing lots of damage by foot. Remember back to '06 when we struggled hitting targets in the forward line? Our midfielders continued bombed high kicks into the 50 giving our forwards no chance at all, Enright makes rain with his kicks and was the worst offender. I do think he is a good player, but I also think him and Wojcinski have the easiest roles in the side (not accoutable, both recievers) and shouldn't be rated as highly as other players, especially some who get less possessions.

Elated. I wished I'd seen more of it throughout '07 when he had bucket loads of opportunity.

Come to his senses? So your saying his decision isn't sensible? Do you even realise what is required to be an AFL footballer today? If you want to be good, strength / endurance training controls your life... you only worry about that and what you should / shouldn't be eating. Talent is the tip of the iceberg and Nath just didn't look like he wanted to be there from the start. His body was far from AFL spec too...

Look... the kid has obviously been told to pull his finger out (prob by coaches & players) and he didn't like the sound of it. He walked. He gave up. This is not a mentality that will have anyone succeed at the highest level, football or anywhere else for that matter.

Quite frankly you're just making up the 'more severe' connotations, maybe if I'd used the term 'nutter' it may have been worse, but I didn't. Really all it says, colloquially, is that he is very keen on religion to the the point where it influences the decisions he makes on life, which in Nathan's case is beyond dispute.

For the record, Harley injured his finger in that Round 1 game and didn't play for the next 6 or 7 weeks. I don't think he played prior to the round 6 Richmond game - in fact I don't think he played in Round 6. Partridge will know, he has a freak memory for details like that.

Tom didn't play until after the PA game. His first game back was in he magoos at SS.
