Rule changes for 2019:

Traditional playing positions at centre bounces
  • Clubs must have six players inside both 50m arcs, with one player inside the goalsquare.
  • Four midfield players must start inside the centre square with the two wingmen stationed along the wing.
Kick-ins
  • At kick-ins, a player will no longer need to kick to himself to play on from the goalsquare.
  • Following a behind, the man on the mark will be brought out to 10m from the top of the goalsquare, rather than the existing five metres.
Marks and free kicks in defence
  • When defenders mark or receive a free kick within nine metres of their own goal, the man on the mark will be brought in line with the top of the goalsquare.
Runners and water carriers
  • Team runners may only enter the playing surface after a goal has been kicked and must exit before play restarts.
  • Water carriers are not permitted to enter the playing surface during live play.
Umpire contact
  • Players will be prohibited from setting up behind the umpire at centre bounces.
50m penalties
  • The player with the ball:
  • Must be allowed to advance the mark by 50m without the infringing player delaying the game.
  • Will be able to play on while the 50m penalty is being measured out.
Kicking for goal after the siren
  • A player who has been awarded a mark or free kick once play has ended:
  • Will now be able to kick across their body using a snap or check-side kick
  • BUT must kick the ball directly in line with the man on the mark and the goal.
Marking contests
  • The 'hands in the back’ rule interpretation has been repealed so a player can now:
  • Place his hands on the back of his opponent to protect his position in a marking contest
  • PROVIDED he does not push his opponent in the back.
Ruck contests: prior opportunity
  • A ruckman who takes direct possession of the ball from a bounce, throw-up or boundary throw-in will no longer be regarded as having had prior opportunity.
  • Where there is uncertainty over who is the designated ruckman, the ruckman for each team will still be required to nominate to the field umpire.

Good that runners/drink carriers can't be onfield during live play. I like the relaxation of hands in the back.

But I have no faith the umpires' ability to actually adjudicate any of these new rules correctly or consistently. They can't even work out fundamental sh*t.

Oh good, changes for changes' sake. Mind you the hands in the back rule change could be a big one for our forwards, especially Tex who seems to always get pinged for it.

More a game for power forwards tough backmen and hard mids.

Less of a game for collingwood Richmond and melbourne.

Strangely I don't mind all of these changes.

The ruckman one is interesting, I gather it is no 3rd man up but the nomination process isn't required - can see clubs exploiting this one.

Setting up behind an umpire, does that include running in? Wouldn't imagine this one will be called unless the ump is bowled over.

Eddie will love the relaxing of the hands in the back rule.

Rule changes for 2019:

Kick-ins
  • At kick-ins, a player will no longer need to kick to himself to play on from the goalsquare.
  • Following a behind, the man on the mark will be brought out to 10m from the top of the goalsquare, rather than the existing five metres.

Interesting. So there will no longer be free kicks for stepping on/over the line from a kick in - the player can claim he was playing on by a few inches?
Umpire contact
  • Players will be prohibited from setting up behind the umpire at centre bounces.

Which will mean players will set up as close to behind the umpire as they can get away with - therefore guaranteeing they know which side of them their defender will be forced to start from, and opening up a hit zone from their ruckman right behind the umpire. This one will be rescinded one day.

Marking contests
The 'hands in the back’ rule interpretation has been repealed so a player can now:
  • Place his hands on the back of his opponent to protect his position in a marking contest
  • PROVIDED he does not push his opponent in the back.

  • UNLESS the player in front is Alex Rance and he chooses to jack-knife forward, in which case it's a free kick to Richmond.

Ruck contests: prior opportunity

  • A ruckman who takes direct possession of the ball from a bounce, throw-up or boundary throw-in will no longer be regarded as having had prior opportunity.

Another tactical change in the offing. No longer can Richmond ruck Shaun Grigg against Max Gawn and try to have an extra number to rove the tap. It gives the genuine ruckman a chance to possess the ball and do something with it. As the father of a ruckman, I approve!

And it will lead to more ball-ups and time wasting at the end of games. Ugh. No one was annoyed with this rule. If Max Gawn can't take an advantage out of rucking against Grigg, then he's not worth being called a ruck

Great for tall, useless at doing much else rucks.

Given Dermott was a CHF charging into the centre square back in the 1980s, I think after 30 odd years that counts as being traditional.

Also no more plays like CC charging through the centre? Why not?? FFS So dumb

Kick-in changes seem pretty good. Effectively means the kicker doesn't have to kick behind the line, doesn't it? Kick from wherever. If it's over the line, it's play on.
Runners and water carriers - at last! Unnecessary presence and often used to cheat.

Glad 'hands in the back’ is gone. Stupid rule, never consistently enforced and arbitrarily penalised contact that was utterly meaningless in the contest.

Rest of the changes, including traditional playing positions at centre bounces, seem pretty pointless.

I think the first change will be that Milera will now be our kick in
he'll run to the centre square doing spins and side steps and remain untackled.

the Hands in the back is just going to promote Diving.... Robbie Gray, Rance, Poppy and Wingard coming to a pool near you.

Traditional playing positions at centre bounces

Nope. I mean seriously a man in the goal square?? lulz

  • At kick-ins, a player will no longer need to kick to himself to play on from the goalsquare.
  • Following a behind, the man on the mark will be brought out to 10m from the top of the goalsquare, rather than the existing five metres.
Will drastically change things. Clearly want a basketball fast break style

Marks and free kicks in defence
  • When defenders mark or receive a free kick within nine metres of their own goal, the man on the mark will be brought in line with the top of the goalsquare.
They already get a fair bit of leeway, is this really needed?

Runners and water carriers
  • Team runners may only enter the playing surface after a goal has been kicked and must exit before play restarts.
  • Water carriers are not permitted to enter the playing surface during live play.
Yeah fine.

Umpire contact
  • Players will be prohibited from setting up behind the umpire at centre bounces.
Is this an issue?

50m penalties
  • The player with the ball:
  • Must be allowed to advance the mark by 50m without the infringing player delaying the game.
  • Will be able to play on while the 50m penalty is being measured out.
Like this one

Kicking for goal after the siren
  • A player who has been awarded a mark or free kick once play has ended:
  • Will now be able to kick across their body using a snap or check-side kick
  • BUT must kick the ball directly in line with the man on the mark and the goal.
Meh, yeah ok I guess. Will be abused though IMO

Marking contests
  • The 'hands in the back’ rule interpretation has been repealed so a player can now:
  • Place his hands on the back of his opponent to protect his position in a marking contest
  • PROVIDED he does not push his opponent in the back.
So you mean you're not allowed to push a player in the back?

Ruck contests: prior opportunity
  • A ruckman who takes direct possession of the ball from a bounce, throw-up or boundary throw-in will no longer be regarded as having had prior opportunity.
  • Where there is uncertainty over who is the designated ruckman, the ruckman for each team will still be required to nominate to the field umpire.
So we want more ball ups???

Traditional playing positions at centre bounces
  • Clubs must have six players inside both 50m arcs, with one player inside the goalsquare.
  • Four midfield players must start inside the centre square with the two wingmen stationed along the wing.

Cost vs benefit? Clearly they're trying to open up the game, but - how much difference will this make vs potential for goal-review type delays and faffing around?

Will reserve judgement but I don't see it as being as big a plus for the game as it is intended.

Kick-ins
  • At kick-ins, a player will no longer need to kick to himself to play on from the goalsquare.
  • Following a behind, the man on the mark will be brought out to 10m from the top of the goalsquare, rather than the existing five metres.

Interesting. The kicker has a man on the mark as much as 19m away, and he can run off in any direction. All other opposing players will be further away, setting up vs. the kicker's team. Potential for some major play-on kicks here (which is of course what they want). I wonder if we will see the death of the chip to the pocket - I mean, why would you when you've got this sort of leeway?

Marks and free kicks in defence
  • When defenders mark or receive a free kick within nine metres of their own goal, the man on the mark will be brought in line with the top of the goalsquare.

Fair enough. Just a practical thing, plus again it's clear they are trying to maximise the chances of longer kicks clearing zones.

Runners and water carriers
  • Team runners may only enter the playing surface after a goal has been kicked and must exit before play restarts.
  • Water carriers are not permitted to enter the playing surface during live play.

No argument there.

Players in low scoring games may go thirsty :)

Umpire contact
  • Players will be prohibited from setting up behind the umpire at centre bounces.

Um.... let me think about that one.

50m penalties
  • The player with the ball:
  • Must be allowed to advance the mark by 50m without the infringing player delaying the game.
  • Will be able to play on while the 50m penalty is being measured out.

I didn't realise the first point was much of a problem, but anyway.
Second point: OK, again, opening up the game and reducing the disadvantage for the team receiving the penalty (that the oppo gets to set up).

Kicking for goal after the siren
  • A player who has been awarded a mark or free kick once play has ended:
  • Will now be able to kick across their body using a snap or check-side kick
  • BUT must kick the ball directly in line with the man on the mark and the goal.

I'm not sure I understand this one, will need some thought.

Marking contests
  • The 'hands in the back’ rule interpretation has been repealed so a player can now:
  • Place his hands on the back of his opponent to protect his position in a marking contest
  • PROVIDED he does not push his opponent in the back.

Good. You should be able to put out your hands when someone is backing in to you. I guess it's back to the old days of umpires having to judge what is a "push". Let's see how that goes.

I don't see why this one is necessary.

Looking forward to seeing many who constantly complain about the crows "Non-statistical" role-playing forward, stating their support for the "Traditional Starting Positions"(tm) rule, which basically mandates the existence of at least two of these players.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I dont mind any of the rules except this one because I know the impires will not know how to adjudicate it and players will act like they been pushed for the free. They should remove the push so it gives players an incentive to be strong.

I need help with the Marks and free kicks in defence........can someone please explain ?

If a mark or free kick occurs further back than the top of the goal square, the man on the mark is pulled back to be parallel with the top of the square. e.g. Defender marks the ball just before it crosses for a behind, man on the mark is placed in line with the goal square so the defender isn't kicking from behind the goal line.

Still need to nominate
