O'Meara vs. Clark

Seriously we don't really have any top 25 players who would fit. At best we are discussing MacPharlin, Sandilands and Fyfe.

This has been my concern from the get-go. The only comfort I take from this situation is that every other club is in the same boat, and an 18-team comp will exacerbate the problem further, 2012 super-draft or no.

What's missing from discussion is that no-one's analysed the GWS list to see what are their key deficiencies (yes, they have heaps, but what are the major ones???)

IMO we should try facilitating a player from another team into GWS that fills such a deficiency in order to secure O'Meara; in addition to giving up our first round pick, helping pay part of their salary could help grease the wheels here.

Can someone explain why (apart from the whole soulless franchise thing) Clark is not nominating either WC or Freo but only Freo.

I would have doubts over Cox lasting much longer and Clark would be ideal for the Slime in tandem with NN Clark for Darling?

Of all our players the only one who could realistically be considered top 25 in the AFL that I would be happy to trade, I only come up with MJ.

Wooooooo, it's been a while since this puppy got let out of the bag, but I'm throwing in a big mother ****ing:

Well their midfield is now set with the inclusion of Palmer. Im not sure they need much else

We need to look at both short and long term.

Palmer compo + 1st rounder for o'meara

2nd rounder for Mitch Clark or take the risk and let him go psd and price his contract accordingly and juggle our tpp/salary cap to suit. Have to play hard ball at trade time suck of getting bent over. If we don't get him it is not a real loss. Pav will be full time forward next year and mora or fyfe can slot in a chf. Sibo hopefully will develop over the off season and become a forward target.

I Would chase Fev for a short term fix. Proven, hungry. Can teach some of our players to kick , and would be great role model (on field) for sibo and houghton. Would give our 4th rounder for him.

We aren't looking too bad for 2012.

If Anthony and mj have good preseasons they can both be handy in the backline with snos. Mcpharlin may even finish his career as a forward.

Ibbo snos Grover
Suban mj anthony
Hill Barlow mora
Deboer pavlich fyfe
Balla mcpharlin z Clarke
Sandi mundy lower
McPhee Pitt duff muz

Sibo and houghton could push for selection if they develop. Fev or Clark would slot in. Injuries were the concern this year with limited depth.
Go for Fev, Clark, o'meara and chase some stand outs from the state leagues.

I posted this in the Zac Clarke thread but thought it might fit better here. What do you guys think? I'll just copy and paste

"Slightly off the Zac topic. If we want both Mitch and O'meara, is it possible to trade a future draft pick? I recall reading that the AFL had introduced that recently but I don't recall any clubs putting it into practice.

If we could, how about our 1st this year for Mitch and trade our compensation pick, plus a future first for O'meara. An extra first or two in next year's super draft would be enticing for GWS and it's not like we would be missing out. We'd have JOM and our NSW scholarship kids. That's still pretty handy I think"

So essentially we'd miss out on two first round picks next year and one this year but we would be getting O'meara who we would probably pick next year regardless if we had that opportunity. Also, I assume the pick we would have to use on Moller would follow along the lines of father/son rule. So we use our 3rd round pick and if another club tries to trump us, we need to use our highest available pick.

Best case scenario is we get to keep our 2nd round pick which we have done very well with in recent years. It's not exactly mortgaging our future when we are getting JOM back and Clark is still very young too

I tend to agree that the Saints may offer a Hayes or Goddard to get O'Meara since Lyon at least, seems to have accepted they need to rebuild. I think it will take Hill, Fyfe, Morabito, level player to get it done for us & that's just not worth it. I doubt even a Broughton, Duffield, Ibbotson type is going to do it. I would trade Sandi, (keep Griff, Clarke) + Palmer comp to get O'Meara but I doubt that's going to happen.

Clarke I really like the idea of. He seems to have heart & mongrel and god knows we need a bit more of that. Would make a great team with Mayne, Balla, DBoer and free El Captain up to play as a pure full forward. Clark & Pav as the CHF, FF and the others on the outside along with Walters, Hill, Fyfe rotating is pretty exciting. If, and I mean if we can get him for our first rounder and a mid range player I'd pull the trigger without hesitation.

They're happy with the way Lycett is developing by all accounts.

The problem is who knows what a club's first round pick will be in future years? WCE had, what, pick 4 last year but will drop to about 23 this year.

Even allowing for the compromised draft it's a big difference.

Any chance we can relinquish the rights to Moeller in exchange for O'Meara. Think this would be a win win for both clubs with Moeller being from NSW

that could happen, but it really depends on how they rate moeller. would the afl let the number one mini-draft pick go for a scholarship player? sounds a bit tenuous to me

None of us really know how good Moller is or can be, but for arguments sake, say he is shaping up to be a future gun, would we really want to trade a future gun Ruck/Forward for a future gun Mid?

I'd prefer we go hard with all our picks this year than use some of our future picks/kids.

Clark and JOM for Palmer and a mix of our first couple of picks + Duff (I don't rate him, but it appears alot of people do)/Crowley etc.

I think GWS could be interested in Crowley. A hard physical player around the kids which is what they'll need. Also gives them a bit of leadership. Do the Brennan deal and let GWS sign him and we could also send the pick back for Jaeger.

The Palmer compo pick, if it's a 1st rounder + Duff + Crowley could get JOM. Duffield would be a player other clubs would value.

I also don't think any mini draft deals will be worth a number 1 pick, even though they may be worthy of the first pick in 2012. They're still another year away, and as we saw with Darling, players can slide a hell of a long way in that time. The fact that GWS can't list them also makes them less valuable, ala "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush".

Tbfh, Trade Week is almost my favourite part of the year. It's like playing chess while you're on drugs.

Because . . . . ?

Because every well thought out excellent idea tends to take on the taint of deformed retaridism once you have properly thought it over.

It's like a night out on the sauce. It all makes sense at the time, but the morning after "WHAT THE **** WAS I THINKING" ******ed, self loathing hangover, really does give you a sense of perspective that can only be gained after the fact.

Every trade looks like a winner amidst the trade week haze, but once you sobre up, more often than not you realise how ****ing stupid the idea was.

I dont really like the idea of Clark but if we dont pay too much for him then I think its ok but anything more than the Palmer compo pick is too much. It also means we can target that we can target the best available mid in the draft which is a good thing however Griffen no longer has a real position at the club so should be traded.

I doubt we have the trade currency to secure O'meara if they say he is as good as a number one pick other clubs will have much more to offer than us. I dont mind us trying to get him but if the price is too high then I dont think we should bother we might have the first draft pick next yr anyhow!!!

It will be very hard to get both. Getting Mitch Clark is much more likely then getting Jaeger. So it it likely that the club will prioritize getting Jaeger and if not (which is likely) go for Mitch. Gold Coast are reported to be offerring pick 4 in this years draft for the rights to O'Meara. But in a weaker draft might not even get the job done. Crowley, Walters and Pearce will no doubt be offerred in either potential deal.

No wrong, it will only be very difficult (impossible?) to get Jaeger. Whether we go for Clark (likely) or not, it wont make much difference to getting Jaeger. The only way we can get the J-Bomb is if GWS want to be nice to us.

Given that, the poll is flawed ... obviously Jaeger is the player you want to go for, but realistically we probably need to put some effort in Clark or some other equivalent that we can get in because Jaeger is probably going to be a bridge too far.

I reckon go for both.

Give them Johnno Crowley Ibbo & Duff for JOM , in the short term, next year may be another bad year for us but, I think thats a good thing, because by all reports next year is also a superdraft. So we finish with a top 5 - 8 pick and get another gun to add to our core group of 18 - 23 year olds. Plus we get JOM. Its kinda like tanking.......but not.

So going by the poll... It is pretty clear we don't really want Clark.

Not necessarily. As I said earlier, the poll is flawed. Of course you'd go for O'Meara if you could, so I'd tick that box too, but realistically we've got no chance at Jaeger where as Clark is just about knocking down our door to get in and Bris can't do much about it. It's not comparing like for like in so many ways.

Ok so maybe it is just me who doesn't want Clark.

We already have Sandi/Clarke/Griffin/Keplar/Johnson

How many more Ruck/Utilities do we need.

Even if we trade Griffin away that leaves us with 4 players for what... 2 maybe 3 positions...

If we were to trade for MClark then Griffin and Keplar would have to be traded. Both would get AFL game time at other clubs so not much point staying with us.

Compo Pick(Palmer) + Duffield + Griffin + Keplar for 1st pick in mini draft

Gives them a pick to bank next year and some decent players to help in the first few years.

2nd Round Pick + Anthony for Clark

Leaves us with atleast our 1st and 3rd round picks.

Get it done Bond & co.*

*I don't think that will really get it done.....
