O'Meara vs. Clark

Year after year posters on Bigfooty think spud + spud + spud = gun. Yet, a trade like that has not go close to occurring over the past 10yrs. Clubs want quality not depth.

These expansion clubs are happy to cop a poor first few years in order to keep quality for the future. Why would they want the sloppy seconds of a bottom 8 side anyway?

It's pretty obvious other clubs value JOM substantially. I think some of the ideal trade scenarios being thrown around based on us sending GWS our trash are really reaching ie Crowley and extra garbage

For JOM, I'd say a combo of Mayne and Ibbotson might be more around the mark. If you change one of them with Kepler, it might get near the mark too given Sheeds man crush.

Ibbotson
Mayne
Bradely
Roberton
Duffield
Johnson
Griffin
Pitt
Etc

They'd be some of the names you'd need to toss around, others also that I haven't included due to my one eyed support of them. Someone like Suban for example whom I consider future captain material. I love him but to get JOM, we are maybe going to have to give away someone we love.

Voted Clark, because realistically I don't think we have anything even close to be able to secure O'Meara.

I'm warming to Clark to be honest, have seen him play at the GABBA a few times this year, he is a more than decent lead up forward. Most importantly a great set shot at goal, which we need desperately. He is easily an upgrade from Bradley, and will be even more valuable down the track when Sandi's best football has passed him.

He isn't happy at Brisbane and has made it clear he wants to come to us, with a bit of luck we should be able to secure him under market price. Obviously his major downside is his lack of work rate at times, I'll back the recruiters in if they think they can turn this around.

If we didn't draft a player next year in the national draft and got Clark JOM and upgraded our rookies I would dance a merry jig.

Clark is a quality player, would be handy especially if Griff goes and he still is young with a lot of his footy left. I reckon it's worthwhile just so long as they don't over pay in trading/wage.

M.Clarke's not to fame wa in the RUCK!! in 2009. ever since luenberger got fit and back in NO1 ruck spot M.Clarke was relegated to forward line and second string ruck.

he's a hack and not worth chasing. He's a a poor man's forward who is looking for a big meal ticket back home.

When will this club learn from chasing expensive ex pats.

No wrong, it will only be very difficult (impossible?) to get Jaeger. Whether we go for Clark (likely) or not, it wont make much difference to getting Jaeger. The only way we can get the J-Bomb is if GWS want to be nice to us.

Given that, the poll is flawed ... obviously Jaeger is the player you want to go for, but realistically we probably need to put some effort in Clark or some other equivalent that we can get in because Jaeger is probably going to be a bridge too far.

That's exactly what I said? If we can't get Jaeger we will definitely end up with Clark. You don't know what the club is thinking they might want to offer Zac Clarke and Ibbo and a pick. (Which I would be very much against)

Daniel Harris and Nathan Krakour say hai!

Josh Fraser would like a towel, too.

And when Nathan Bock was told he was hired to protect your young 'uns it wasn't to help them negotiate school crossings now was it?

I just had a worrying thought, what if Harvey thinks Clark is capable of playing that 200cm ruck rover he's so persistent with developing.

I was against Clarke coming over, mainly because i didnt think we'd need him. But if he brings with him a ferocious attack on the ball and doesnt cost a farm i'm warming to him. A guy of that size (with obvious skill, more than your average ruckman) going hell for leather at the footy is going to do damage wherever he plays

Similar sentiment, though I was more against trading for him because I didn't want to jeopardise our chances with O'Meara.

I think the tide is turning in our favour, we could get him cheaply. I posted this on the trades board.

Worth remembering that Colin Young (Clark's manager) has expressly ruled out GWS as an option on a number of occasions.

The 200cm Clark had been touted a potential recruit for the new team coming into the competition, Greater Western Sydney, but his WA-based manager Colin Young was adamant this week that Clark wouldn't be going there.

That leaves Clark with the option of staying with Brisbane or seeking a fresh start at a new club.

He's not staying at Brisbane and the Eagles have no spot for him so it's either trade with Freo or the Lions end up with nothing a la Ball and Stevens.

Seems like its going to be a lot easier to get Clark than O'Meara, but maybe there is a way we can get both.

If O'Meara is as good as people say, why hasn't anybody suggested trading Pav to get him?

Time to make the big call and trade Sandi

sandi to GWS for pick 7 and Jaeger
pick 7 for the best key forward in the draft (Pav clone)
pick 16 for Clark
pick 32 draft/trade for a specialist back pocket

play Griff and Clarke as our rucks
play Clark and Pav as our key forwards

this way Fremantle can have a crack at the flag in the next 2 to 3 years with Pav and by then hopefully our pick 7 key forward is ready to take over from the legend opening up another tilt at a flag

Some might say giving up Sandi would be insane, but damn I really agree with you on this one bigpav. Realistically I give Sandi another 2-3 years max before retirement. Clarke was been on fire, sure, he has big shoes to fill (sorry) but is excelling rapidly. At the same time I'm conflicted as Sandi has shown great loyalty which should be reciprocated, I'd feel awful for him if we won a flag with him playing for another team. This could possibly be the case if we get Clarke and O'Maera.

Would you give up Sandi for O'Maera?

Gimme, we have discussed the trade and probably would, but it doesnt bode well for keeping other stars that are at the club in the future. Sandi is a WA boy, it wrecks the culture of your club if you ship him over the other side of the country when he has been very loyal and wants to stay

I think it also highlights that having a marquee player is a double-edged sword. For the better part of their career they're invaluable on and off the field (in terms of marketing, membership, attracting and retaining other players), but a huge ruckus is created if you try to trade them on, or even retire them before they think they're ready.

IMO a club's brand gets severely damaged when supporters and sponsors see a favourite son lining up in opposition colours.

Harvey is all for making the trade with Brisbane, the recruitment panel are against it.

I strongly believe that our coaching staff, bar Harvey needs a staunch overhaul.

Unless it's a first year coach, or a coach taking over a particularly shit list (think Bailey or Ratten) then you'll always see this sort of "Immediate vs Long Term Success", tension, it happens across all clubs.

But there's always something in place to take the emotion out of it - in the case of Norfs it's poverty, in our case The Model that's been in place since '08.

And dude, what's with the Adelaide thing? Lose a bet?

and why would GWS want sandi to begin with? he is almost at the end of his career. objectively he is not worth jaeger, with likely 10 years of service in comparison. GWS will not offer what freo would want for him just for 2 - 3 years. madness imo.

Marketing (he is a giant after all), leadership and some protection at the stoppages for their kids while they develop.
