What is a bigger hole in our list. Key position forward or pacy classy goal kicking midfield.

Who would you prefer the club chase? Obviously the kid will cost us more in terms of picks/players but he joins the club on base contract. Clark will come cheaper than the kid but take a fair amount of money.

Classy midfielder vs. Key position forward.

If you put both i'd tick it, otherwise not interested in only going for 1 player.

We'll be needing at least 8 or so at least so not sure why we can't get both these guys

agree with this. we should have a crack at both... im thinking clark is now a forgone conclusion so little focus will be required. jaeger on the other hand will take a little more effort

I don't see how anyone could say that we must bring someone in who can play forward (not even a specialist forward) when we've not even played Pavlich there. We have the makings of a forward line. We still lack actual midfielders.

Time to make the big call and trade Sandi

sandi to GWS for pick 7 and Jaeger
pick 7 for the best key forward in the draft (Pav clone)
pick 16 for Clark
pick 32 draft/trade for a specialist back pocket

play Griff and Clarke as our rucks
play Clark and Pav as our key forwards

this way Fremantle can have a crack at the flag in the next 2 to 3 years with Pav and by then hopefully our pick 7 key forward is ready to take over from the legend opening up another tilt at a flag

Can see us getting both tbh.

1st round for Clark. Some crumbs aswell if need be.

Compo pick for JOM, with plenty of steak knives at hand i.e. Griffin pick, Duffield, Crowley, some other spud who plays well on paper at selection meetings, 2nd rounder etc.

Plenty of ammunition to take a pop at both guys.

all well and good saying this, but it just wont happen so why entertain the thought? sandi isnt going anywhere

I'd say O'Meara should be the priority. Can never have enough quality mids.

Clark would be a nice-to-have sort of player, but we don't really need him as such. He isn't really a key forward, he's more of a ruckman IMHO. If we really need an extra tall forward (in addition to Pavlich, Bradley or Anthony) we could always get Fevola for a bag of chips. Would the high price for Mitch Clark be worth it?

Harvey please dont bend Fremantle over a barrel to get the deal done- what the lions want is outrageous. They are over rating him like few others before (well that might be stretch). Definietley go for J-Bomb. I think Harves should be locked up in his house during trade week so that he can not influence any of our recruiting decisions and the recruiters can look at it objectively.

That we know of.

The "end of an era" Saints will be the dark horse here.

Ive interpreted that comment as Lyon is off to the Dees. Hes had a massive contract put in front of him and he would not confirm or deny whether hes signed at a presser last week. Then kept his players on the ground for 5-10 minutes after the game last night to have a chat about 'the end of an era'. Dont be surprised if he walks. Not that this has anything to do with this thread. Back on topic- i really hope st kilda dont throw a goddard or fisher/gilbert at GWS because that would get the deal done every day of the week i feel. Lets just hope that Jaeger has said he doesnt want to go to Melbourne plays a part.

to be fair, the only club official that i have heard talk up the possibility of getting mitch clark is chris bond, harves has been pretty tight lipped about if from what ive heard

Perhaps but how many top 25 players do they have in their team? Goddard, Nicky Dal, Riewoldt? That's about it.

Goddard is the only one I could see moving but not to GWS. He is desperately chasing the premiership dream so I can't see him heading to Breakfast Point.

I will be surprised if any club offered a top 25 player in the comp.

Hayes is another - perhaps no longer top 25, but he's from NSW and if we were to list the top leaders in the AFL he would be amongst the first chosen.

If he wants to live the dream then it won't be with St Kilda, so could be part of a 3 way deal where he goes to a contender and they release someone to GWS.

Or he re-evaluates his priorities (age, young family etc) and just takes the cash.

As a Freo supporter I came to dread pre-season trading but now I'm not worried about there might exist one person who has a disproportionate say in making the big calls.

Now, as soon as the season's over, the club starts reminding everyone about "The Model" (based, IIRC, on the Oakland Athletics system) - it helps remind supporters, recruiters, coaching personnel and player managers what we're after.

My only concern is whether the club regularly challenge the assumptions underpinning this model and don't meekly submit when the "computer says noooo"

Of all our players the only one who could realistically be considered top 25 in the AFL that I would be happy to trade, I only come up with MJ.

Seriously we don't really have any top 25 players who would fit. At best we are discussing MacPharlin, Sandilands and Fyfe.

MacPharlin wouldn't work for them. Too old as will be many top 25 players.

Sandilands is probably too short-term a solution (I am in the camp of posters who would happily take 1st rounder + Jaeger for Sandi IF Sandi wanted to go).

Fyfe...well, why would you do that?

I like Clark as a player and think he'd be a very handy player to have in your team. That being said, I don't believe he is the answer to any 'Key Forward' problems that we may have. He had his chance this season to show what he could do up forward as a primary target. In my eyes he failed to stand up in that spot. Yes, his team was losing and yes, he may not have had silky service, but he just did not seem up to being the main man up forward. He may work very well as a foil to Pavlich, but at the price he's going to cost (both in what we'd have to trade and in salary) I think there are better options.

I've not seen Jaegar play so its difficult to say how good he is, but I think we need to be careful in not getting caught up in the hype on this kid. He's 16, and as good as any 16 year old kid is, it is still a gamble that he will make the step up to AFL level and be successful. If he shows that much promise by all means have a crack at getting him but I wouldn't be handing over the keys to Freo Oval to do it.

So, in short, my answer is neither. Let's either chase a Key Forward option that isn't Clark or inject some midfield class by getting a proven commodity.
