Well, actually I have one from about 1994 (i think) that still has the manufacturers tags on it. Sekem was the manufacturer by the way. Anyway this one has the CUB logo on it.

You might expect me to back peddle but I'm not :p, that guernsey could be from 1992 or 1993 when Alcohol sponsor logos were still allowed on the 'supporter guernsey's' so sekem were allowed to produce it to replicate what the bears were wearing at the time. I think Alcohol and Cigarette sponsorship had these rules about marketing placed on them by the Australian Government from around 1994 through to 1996, Alcohol had to limit their's while Cigarette Companies were totally abolished, that's also why 'Benson and Hedges' stopped being the naming rights partner for the Australian Cricket home series'.

Have always wanted to find out if mine was a player worn jumper. From memory all the supporter jumpers you could buy only had the iron BB design that didn't go around the back. The long sleeved supporter jumpers didn't have the design on the sleeves either. This one is sewn on and sewn on numbers.

The second one was purchased from the Brisbane Bears shop they were selling player jumpers for $50 at the end of 96 (unbelievable) it was Danny Dickfos jumper and fortunately dad worked with him and got him to sign the number on the back. Also the on field warm up jackets (The guy said it was Craig Lamberts No 18)

That's from either 97 or 98 (leaning towards 98), so how does that work with the whole alcohol branding thing?

EDIT: Sorry about the size, trying to fix it now.

EDIT2: Fixedish.

Ok now i'm back peddling :p don't know now why the guernsey on ebay has the coca-cola logo and not the CUB on it then, unless it was a mistake by sekem in '94.

I really like that V one. I don't know why, it just looks really good. I want one but I expect they'd be fairly pricey these days.

Me too i liked it so much i remember trying to get one off of ebay a couple of years ago it was from '95/'96 i think '96 because it had the AFL centenury logo went up to $55 bucks + postage but pulled out after then it ended up going for over $150, not paying that for a guernsey from the mid 90s.

Why is it then that manufacturers only started putting their logo (i.e. Puma) on their club's guernseys in around 1997-98?

Because most clubs, if not all had their jumpers manufactured by Sekem before 1997 and for some reason they didn't put their logo on the front of the jumper

Brisbane wore it in the heritage round of 2004, and they might wear it again at some point if they bring back the heritage round.

Done some research today and I believe official manufacturers didn't start releasing official club guernsey's or merchandise for sale until then, before then Sekem (and Puma in the mid 90s), the ones that had deals with the AFL were the only ones that could release replica guernsey's and merchandise, also thats why all merchandise up until 1997 was just made by companies that had deals with the AFL, not the clubs. I remember Adidas first releasing Adelaide Crows gear in 1997 although they had been sponsors of them and makers of their gear since 1991, the AFL had run of the mill and recieved all profits from merchandise sales up until then.

1997 was the first year all clubs wore the new polyester printed jumpers.
Prior to that some players used the new ones, while other stayed with the old acryllic 'wool-look' jumpers. (They looked like wool, but hadn't been since the mid 70s when all the jumpers changed for colour TV)

With the new technology, where the jumper was printed, the manufacturers were able to put their own logos on the jumpers for the first time.
Essendon had a Reebok logo in the middle of the sash, Adelaide had their adidas logo under the AFL logo

The AFL standardised this in 2000 to where it today, under the neck.

I thought it was 1996, and in 1995 one player per team appeared to give them a test run (Brisbane was Scott McIvor, Essendon was Michael Long).

Pre Season 1994 a few teams wore them as well.

Brisbane's yellow V in 1996 was a lot pointier then that in 1995 because of the change, I Think Gowers and Dion Scott continued to wear the old woolen style as well.

Brisbane Bears Jumper I posted on the Brisbane board for potential authentication has taken a bit of a turn for the worse.

Thought those interested in this thread or the bears jumper may be interested in the read.

I called the thread "Brisbane Bears Historians" in case you don't want to link from this post.

Sorry, I didn't write that very well, did I? You are correct.
1995 preseason was the first of the new jumpers.
Fitzroy, Footscray, Hawthorn & North were the four clubs to wear them in the Ansett Cup.
1996 virtually all clubs had some, if not all players wearing them.
1997 was the first year the printed sponsor logos were used.
(That was what I was alluding to when I mentioned 1997)

can't believe that guy photoshoping (and dong such a bad job) that guernsey to try and make it look authentic

then telling the bloke with the legit one it was a 'supporter' jumper.

In 1996 it was actually Kouta who brought upon the apparel change in regard to Jumpers having their apparel names displayed.

It was actually to do with the fact that in those days all the players at a club wore the apparel makers boots as well tracksuits. Almost all the teams for longtime were either adidas or puma, Freo's introduction brought nike in to the market.

In 1996 Carlton decided to sign with Nike, however Kouta was already on a deal promoting his adidas boots. It took a while but the AFL changed the system for the 1997 season. This meant from here on the apparel name could now feature on the jumpers and players could choose their own boots. (Such as in the EPL)

Finally it should be noted that some WAFL clubs had apparel logos on their jumpers and shorts in the 80's such as Swan Districts with adidas. Whilst I also have a Cats jumper from the 80's that is made by adidas, however only says on the i inside of the jumper.

I think you got it back to front.

If I remember rightly, when they first came out they had the Coke badge on the front, and later editions had the CUB.

Sorry this is off topic people but a couple of questions too Banyo Bloods
Did you play for them back in the day?
If so do you remember Quick Mick and Rolly?
Remember the ground, haha good memories.

After looking for months I finally found the Brisbane Bears jumper I have been searching for. Still new with tags and everything. Awful design, but definitely one of those memorable jumpers from that moment in time.
