Other positions for players

Are there positions you think some of our players may be better suited to? For instance, Stewy Dew played early in his AFL career at half back sometimes, should he play there again? Or Michael Wilson on the ball? Junior Burger half-forward? Don't include your favoured positions for players who haven't played yet, just some alternative positions for regular players.

I would like the players to be able to think for themselves. It seems to me you play to please the coach not win the game.
It should not matter where you start playing the game a player should be able to get to the ball and kick to the goals.

Chad Cornes on ball (maybe CHB)
Wilson on ball definitely - great at centre clearances
Dew centre taking over Nick whatsisname's role - run ahead of the ball and boom it in long to the KPP's (or over the goal ump's head)
JB - HBF, wing, on ball
Cassisi - on ball, across centre (not tagging)
Maybe try Brogan at CHB now and again
Lade more at FF

Dew - wing or centre (a bold move, I know)
Chad - half-forward flank
Wilson - half back flank
Cassisi - ruck-rover in a few years
Cain Ackland - full-forward

Thurstans - full forward
Chad - Pavlich-like role in the midfield
Wilbur - on ball (as vice captain)
White - CHB

Thurstans - CHB
White - FF
Chad - on ball/utility
JB - more on-ball like brother, or wing (ala Koutoufides)
Kane - more offensive midfielder or HBF

Dewy played some very solid footy at half back in 98. That was when he seemed determined. Now he seems a bit slack and content in his role as the inconsistent small forward. Ultimately, I'd love Stewy to work his arse off and make it on the wing.

Putting Wilbur back in the middle would be one step in the right direction to winning a premiership. We have noone of that toughness in the middle other than Josh Carr. If i was coach he would be the starting centreman eachw ekk.

Id love Shaun to be played on half back. Either there or in the middle. I see him turning into one of the best half back flankers in the AFL or into one of the most versatile midfielders. He has it all...he just has to follow it thru now.

I wouldnt mind seeing Poults given some time inthe middle. Whenever he plays midfield for the Magpies he goes really well. I cant see how his straightline running and hardness at the ball would be a negative in our midfield at the moment.

I remember one game when he was called for holding the ball. It was a contentious decision among the commentators because although he'd been held for about 5 seconds he hadn't even been slowed up.

Love to see this but with our defence on it's way out I'm not sure if it will happen. Unless Mark Williams has ideas on using JB or Dew as a half-back

See above. Some of his best games for the Magpies were a running half-back. He has a monstrous running kick. Played marvellously against Brisbane in R2 when he was given half-forward freedom.

Don't hold your breath. Poults problem is not that his disposal is as bad as it was in 2000, but that he still has to rid himself of that stigma in the coaches eyes. At the moment he's in that position where in order to play a good game, he needs to be at least twice as good as the other players on the field.

1. Adam Kingsley - Delisted or at least made to languish in the SANFL.

2. Damian Hardwick - SANFL, maybe the occassional game in AFL but only occassional.

3. Stuart Dew - I did hear an interview with Mark Williams after the completion of the season and he has big plans for Dewy to play in the centre for 2004.

4. Shaun Burgoyne - Rebounding Half Back Flanker who loves to run the wing and kick long for goal. Dream would be to see him build that body up and play centre Michael Voss style.

5. Give the likes of Cassisi, Salopek and Ebert a go.

Bishop hasn't improved as much as we had hoped, and Paco should have stayed just for one more year.
Schofield has his odd really good game, but in the main is holding back a youngster.
Let's face it if Schofield and Kingsley and Stevens were all gone,
there goes our stupid running gameplan.
How sad would that be! Not.

Exactly, no need to get rid of Schoey.

Bishop may not have had his best season but assigning him to the SANFL would be a bit stupid. He is the only tall attacking defender we have. Wakelin is pretty much just a stopper and Thurstans is still learning his trade. I think a pre-season with not so much emphasis on the weights will show that the Bish has a great 2004.

As for Monty well that is just plain stupid, he would have to be one of the best markers amongst the small defenders in the league plus who can forget his great battles against the Crows. He is one bloke who gives 100%, 100% of the time.

I am not too sure about Schoey for the same reason that you mention.
How good is our offensive midfield depth? Hell we don't know.
I would like to know just how good Kane Cornes, Ebert and Salopeck could be.
They are not the explosive runners that Schofield, Stevens and kingsley can be, but have other qualities that these three do not posses as well.

We have persevered something fierce with Schofield since he joined with fairly impressive results, yet come finals time which one out of Kingsley, Stevens and Schofield has stood up?
Answer__Not one of them.
Now that brings us to another question, is it the fault of these players or the gameplan. Well they (except for Stevens) are there because of the gameplan.

Just out of interest
Shofield and Stevens have played a total of 18 finals between them for a combined grand total of 8 goals.
5 to Stevens from 9 appearances, and 3 to Schoey from 9.
Less than 1/2 a goal per game from our 2 main offensive midfielders. Defensive midfielders they are not.
Also Schofield's West Coast Finals Vs regular season record/pattern is similar to the one for Port.

Edit: forgot 1999 for Schoey.

I think its fair to say that we play a different brand of footy when it comes to finals and it all comes back to Mark Williams, I have been so reluctant to blame him at anytime for the finals but in this case it is true.

Have a good look back to the way we used both Stevens and Schofield against Sydney in the finals. Stevens was played out of position while Schofield collected splinters from the bench probably up until three quarter time.

Im not sure why you are using Kingsley in the same argument, he is in one terrible class all by himself. Using his name in the same sentence only makes the other two look bad.

Only from the point of view that they are the type of players Williams seems to like.
The one other player of that ilk that didn't work was Michael Stevens. Fast running players surrounded by taggers and one or two that get the ball out to them.
They are preferred to the likes of Kane Cornes, Cassisi, Guerra etc, yet they are also the type of players that fail in pressure cooker environments when you rely too much on them.
Stop their ability to run with midfield floods etc, and they may as well not be there.
wrt finals I agree with the comments about the Sydney game, but we should also have a look at who has performed in at least one or two finals out of our 9.
With these 3 I am finding hard to remember one where they did.
Kane Cornes has, so too has Chad. Same goes for Hardwick and a lot of others, but I cannot remember Schofield and Stevens doing so. They must have somewhere along the line, even for only a quarter or two, but I am having trouble remembering when.
Stevens has had a lot of possessions in finals, but even so I cannot recall him being "dangerous".
As they are/were our two main offensive midfielders, it is really time to look for replacements. Myself I would love for Kane Cornes to be given that chance, but in order to do so a change in gameplan may need to occur.

Fair enough but I think it would be a bit of overkill to chop Schoey when Nick Stevens has already walked. It was just a bit strange how we used a couple of these players when we were already missing attacking midfielders ala James and Francou.

Schofield was probably our most consistent midfielder this year and rarely played a bad game. He had by far his best year at the club and his best year in the AFL and people want him planted int he SANFL for the year?? I cant see how anyone can come to that conclusion.

I agree that when he played this year (during the H&A season) we looked better because he was able to provide that run.
However IMO there are a couple arguments to say it is time he starts getting phased out.

1. Peter Burgoyne, Josh Carr, Stuart Cochrane, Kane Cornes, Adam Kingsley (sort of), Jarrad Schofield and Nick Stevens.
Out of those we have Carr Cochrane and Cornes as taggers, and Burgoyne Schofield and Stevens as our main attacking midfielders.
Not a balanced midfield. Run and tag, tag and run. Stop the run and there is no midfield. Once Eade worked us out in 01, we now get done over by the better teams in important games. Enter Malthouse.

2. This year we have Peter Burgoyne, Carr, Cochrane, Kane Cornes, Kingsley (most likely a bit more often than last year in midfield), and Schofield. James and Francou will return, plus another couple of "new oldies" that we recruited.
I cannot see any change from last year. Kane Cornes will be used in much the same way as last year and may even not play every game. Salopeck and Ebert will be fighting out the spoils with Salopeck having the upper hand in this duel. Cassisi will be pushing to get a game.
Come finals it will be much the same type of midfield as in the Collingwood game (see above).

Now the question, which one of our "regulars" do we start phasing out as lets face it we have a pretty crappy midfield come finals time.
Francou, Carr and James must stay. Hopefully Kane Cornes will stay. That leaves Burgoyne or Schofield.
Time for Schofield to get phased out.
We cannot have a changing of the guard and keep everyone.

Wrt to 2001 I haven't seen the finals games since then, but I cannot recall Schofield standing out.
If you say he stood out, then I will just take your word for it. As I have said I cannot recall offensive midfielders mentioned in the other post playing well in finals.
