We had a thread about our forwardline for years now its time for a backline thread.

Its full of spuds that can't take a mark or position effectively.

We have neglected it for a long time.

Hartley, Dea, Brown are C+ at best on a good day.

Ambrose is a good stopper but thats about it.

Hurley isnt reliable at present.

Saad is solid.

McKenna is more rebounder than defender.

Baguley is old but at least he tries.

We have high hopes for Ridley and Francis but so far they are non entities.

Gleeson is our best mark in defence but injured.

I probably forgot someone

Its not a premiership capable defence.

Hartley, Dea and Brown are pathetic at the best of times but with our mids (and I apply the term loosely) at their very putrid worst, the backs had no chance tonight.

This is where losing Carlisle kills us.

With the pick we got Francis who is so far off it's a tragedy.
I think we also got the pick that landed Morgan.
We overlooked Riley Bonner. Looking like a ripper defender.

In an alternate reality somewhere we have Hooker, Hurley, Francis, Ridley, Bonner, McKenna, Saad, Gleeson all playing defence, with Daniher, Gumbleton and Stewart playing the key forward posts.

i plan to visit this universe one day.

You forget Courtney johns hip would've been cured and neagle wouldve been fitter than Nick riewoldt

that sounds like some sort of back up plan....or plan b, if you will.

Ross Lyon would have planned all week to stop our 3 talls in Hooker,Dainher,Stewart moving Hooker back during the game would have stuffed those plans but instead Worsfold didn't change things up which played into Fremantles' lap

I don’t think it’s bad at all, we’re simply lacking a key defender.

They seem to have decided on Ambrose for that spot, and Hartley as back up.

Neither of them are the answer imo but what would I know.

Brown isn’t up to it but we know that, he’s just depth. As is Dea... he’s capable depth.

Carlisle would be nice but as a backline issue it’s ancient history.

Hird pretty much refused to play him back from 2014 onwards. It’s going on five years since Carlisle was a regular key back for us, we should have solved the issue by now.

Apparently Zerker was excellent today in the VFL practice match. I’d be blooding some kids back there, Ridley and Redman in particular. Francis to come in too when ready. Not going to be amazing, but doubt they’ed be much different immediately to some of the C graders we have back there already. Just with more upside to look forward to.

I thought the backline was pretty good last week, today it was poor but we need to be a bit patient with it until guys like Glesson and Ambrose come back, and on a positive, I've liking Saad's creativity and defensive work.

The backline performed to a similar level as last week - Last week 27 shots and this week 26 shots - Ideally you limit scoring shots to 20 or low 20's each week - Based on a small sample size, I can see an improvement from 2017, though there is a way to go.

We haven't neglected the backline, the players we have recruited to play there haven't been available for senior selection.

I'll be a happy man when all of Brown, Hartley and Dea are playing VFL.

Redman Hooker Ambrose
Mckenna Hurley Saad

It would also be nice if Hurley played on oppositions best forward for once.

Our defenders are just good honest players. I blame our woeful midfield more, not much defenders can do when there is no pressure on the guys delivering into their forward line

How many threads did you make last night?

Redman Hooker Ambrose
Mckenna Hurley Saad

All teams do their best to free up their best defender these days. We’ve done this with Hurley and he’s become an All Australian. Unless an opposition forward seriously catches fire then it should continue, it’s been very successful.

Our backline is fine in general, but we certainly are missing a lockdown key back.

Agreed. That’s a big stuff up looking back at it.
We all seem to love Dodoros recruiting but the reality is that he’s missed on quite a few picks over the last few years. Morgan, Francis, Redman & Langford are a few that haven’t come on as planned. Laverde has been limited due to injuries but still hasn’t really had a breakout game.
