I think we are seeing glimpses of what to expect once we lose Presti and clement and Wakes in the near future. We are losing some real quality in those guys and we have to fill the gaps and build a solid defence. I think Harry O is going to be a gun long term. We have many young options to fill these positions. I'm interested to see what people think our backline will look like, from the current playing list, in the future.
Anyone?

B: Anthony Brown Clarke
HB: Goldsack O'brien Cox

They will be the defenders I would imagine but not always the backline with the shaws, reid, stanley, isles n others goin down there for various jobs .. I went with clarke ahead of isles because Clarke seems to have the pace skill and the strength to be really solid back there .. I think Isles is a battler and has the pace but the strength in one on ones lets him down a bit .. I think Anthony, Brown n Obrien will be our big three .. with O'brien being able to play tall or small .. same with Anthony .. Brown will be groomed to take the Gorillas and hopefully beat them ;) ... Cox And Goldsack look very nice on the half back line .. both tall so will win the one on ones in the air and can drop back to help out .. and they r both pretty quick and have shown that when they put their foot down they can really go .. I'm open to criticism haha so fire away

Our back line in years to come gives us a lot of options, even with Wakelin, presti, clement retired.
We have options from,Cox,goldsac,heath shaw,rhyce shaw,brown,stanley,matty clarke,John Anthony,harry o'brien.

Short term solution until about rounds 15-20:
Maxwell
Wakelin
Shaw
Shaw
Toovey
Goldsack
Cox
Left fielders are Stanley, Clarke and Reid! Reid is a newbie I know, but he is tall and fast and might be able to fill the gap until Clement and Presti return. Is Clarke good enought to fill in for Harry O? Maybe there won't be a choice, and I'd love to see it. Stanley might be ok as a small back as well.

Longish Term (next 2 years)

Clement
Presti
Maxwell
Shaw
Shaw
O Brien
Wakelin
Toovey
Goldsack
Cox

I think there are some serious issues with Maxwell as a long-term option in defence. He seems to be falling into the Jason Cloke mould of too short to play on the big blokes and too slow to play on the smaller types.

He's as brave as can be and is good as a third man up but on more than a couple of occasions this year he has really struggled in 1 on 1 contests. I like the way he plays his footy but I just don't think he's the man to lead the defence in years to come.

Not a bad point, but he is a bit more versatile than Cloke surely? Not as big but gotta be faster. Maybe he won't neccesarily lead the defence, but really in 3 years Wakes, Presti and Clement will all be gone (gulp) and that leaves us with who? Maxwell has only played about 45 games himself, but that makes him and Rhyce Shaw vets in the back line once those 3 are gone. I think they are really going to have to invest some time and thought in replacing KP backs given how important defence is becoming.

We were missing 4 of our 6 starting backmen against Melbourne, so we didn't do too bad but when Harry went down I had a gut feeling Robertson would go on to kick a bag on the debutant, Danny Stanley, and later the inexperienced Alan Toovey. The future looks promising though. Heath Shaw has stood up under pressure since he broke into the side and Harry O'Brien reminds me more and more of James Clement, hopefully John Anthony and Nathan Brown can make it, and we have Cox who should be inserted across the half-back line from now onwards - he's as good as they come on the rebound.

He was carved up by Bate on the lead yesterday and against the Lions Clark was too fast/big for him. I think he can be used to fill gaps ala Cloke but as a long term prospect I don't think he's the answer to our defensive problems unless he can play on a third or fourth string forward.

I agree. There are a lot of things to like about Maxwell (just as there were about C1), but he gets clobbered one-on-one far too often. His best work (just like C1) is when he zones off and comes over the top as third man up. But that's not enough. You've got to be able to beat your direct opponent regularly if you're gonna be a mainstay in defence. He just doesn't do that for mine. Harry's already gone past him, and when JC and Presti are back in the side, you just wonder where that leaves Maxie. Back at Williamstown is increasingly likely IMO.

Your right there, he is never going to be a gun back, but he is probably a piece of the puzzle for no other reason than ATM there is no one else, 3rd or 4th string forwards can still be dangerous, as really someone like Didak is arguably our 3rd string forward!

We wont get Gilbee that ship has sailed.

He wanted to come to us before Eade got there but Eade put a stop to it as soon as he arrived sadly.

We were only gonna lose a second round draft pick or something cheap like that.

B: Anthony - N Brown - Wellingham
HB: H Shaw - Harry O - another young mid from next two years draft.

I wouldn't like to see Maxwell play on someone with anywhere near the talent of Didak. It'd get very ugly.

When is Didak gonna get ugly for us? He has drawn the 3rd stringers all year, yeah injury I know, but you are only as good as your last game, or at least thats what everyone on here reckons.
