Pretty happy with it

We got Mick back but we picked up Robbins, I've never ben a wrap for the bloke but lets hope he can add something with us

A little dissapointed we missed out on Shane Harvey but obviously the two we picked before him we rate higher. Essendon can't be taken seriously with their drafting, picking Salmon and McAlister back.

David Hale (Tall forward)
Broadbeach
22/5/84
200
84

Agile and strong-marking forward who is a long kick for goal. Awarded Harrison Medal as best and fairest in division 2 at the AFL National Under 18 titles, representing Tasmania.

Ashley Watson (Medium defender)
Bendigo Pioneers
26/3/84
181
68

Reads the play well and can find the ball. Had an excellent 2001 winning All-Australian honors at the AFL under 18 titles and playing in the AIS/AFL Academy team against Ireland.

Rod Crowe (Tall defender)
S'ham Dragons
29/7/83
190
90

Strong, athletic player with excellent spring and good hands. AIS/AFL Academy representative against Ireland in 2000 and played for Victoria Metro in 2001.

All this info was pilfered from the AFL site.

I have never seen these players but given we picked up

1 - A tall forward
2 - A running defender
3 - A tall backman

I am very happy with these first three selections. All the obvious deficiencies have been addressed.

why did we pick someone AFTER mick shouldnt we have taken him last. Happy with two key position players in our first three picks though

Hugh Foot is a tall defender who played CHB for the Pioneers. He also played a little in the ruck and full forward.
I didn't know who he was either so I searched through the TAC files and found stat sumaries of every game.
He reguarly took 8 - 12 marks a game at CHB and picked up on average 14 kicks.
They aren't bad stats. He must be fairly tall to play a bit in the ruck.
I think he might be a good roughie.
Here is the link to view his stats:

http://www.footballvic.com.au/tac/tac_clubs.htm

He seemed to get injured in the middle of the year for about a month (no stats) and finished off the year in average form. From this I think that maybe the Roos saw his early potential and believe he will be able to play at that level all the time. That is why he was so far down the list.

On the others :
I thought we chose wisely, except for maybe Robbins.
- Hale is our new Lindsay
- Watson will finally give us a small defender who is quick and can match the genuine small forwards
- Crowe looks to be a solid option for key defence, and hopefully will grow another inch
- Robbins joins Bourke in the "lot to prove" category
- Mick has lost weight but hopefully not his ability
- Foot, well I have had to try to deduce a few things from limited informtion, I guess we will see how accurate I am tomorrow, but he sounds like a taller defender than Crowe and would be looked at to be a key defender.

Overall, a good draft. Coupled with the young midfield of Harris, Smith, Pratt and Harding, we should be in for an exciting couple of years.

Good to see the Kangas are looking to the future ;)

As for Ben Robbins, the bloke was the first emergency for this years premiers, methinks he'll get a game at North.

I think Hale will be a damn good player for you in years to come, you, like us need a really good quality key forward.

I'm dumbfounded.

Hale, 200cm and still growing (he is only 17). I just cannot see him becoming anything other than a ruckman. What a stupid selection.

Watson 68Kg, yet another undersized midfileder/flanker.

But what do I know except from what I have read in the media. Hell, I haven't even seen Hale and Watson play footy.

Hale is not a ruckman, just because he's 200cm doesn't mena he's automatically gonna be a ruckman

Hale could run like David King for all I know, but name me one star forward in the history of the AFL/VFL that was 200cm plus?

I hope your right and I am wrong.

PS - Paul Salmon, at 206cm was on target to be the quickest to 100 goals before doing his knee in 84 or 85, can't remember. Hale will be a lot quicker.
And look at Lindsay. He was 198cm.

Lindsay?????? he hasn't even proven himself yet and has been dumped by one club.

As for Salmon, he proved to everyone he was a ruckman being played out of position, and in todays environment is considered very slow even for a ruckman.

So you have picked some very poor examples there.

I haven't seen this kid play yet so there is every chance I'm wrong.
It just seems very unlikely.

Hugh Foot

Stats on Hugh Foott.

Born 26/2/83
Height 193
Weight 85

Described as a ruckman/key forward in the 2000 draft camp pen pics.

Im very concerned about the weight of Hale. 84kg. This may just show how mobile he is or that he is a stick. Normally AFL players weights are around there height minus 100. eg Rod Crowe 190 cm 90 kg. This kid looks ready made.

BTW Speedy I think the north board knew what they were doing and dont think they would of selected him if he was a future ruckmen after getting Porter. I also feel the Salmon example is a good one and the only reason he hasnt kicked 1000+ goals is because he had the desire to become a ruckmen.

Good selection in my book. Spider is in his last year(s), Porter will give us 5-6 years service. At that time Hale and Petrie should be maturing as ruckman. In the meantime they can provide us with tall options up forward and in defence.

Paul Salmon, Brad Ottens

What was good about Hale at the U.18 championships this year (admittedly 2nd.Div.) was his leap, and agility at ground level. He can really jump. But yes he does need to buid up, is only 17.
I am guessing they see him as a Mckernen type: can play forward with short spells in the ruck.

Robbins has always been on the fringe at Bris, but is a Pagan "type": hard, not quick, physical, plays close tagging roles. Could be handy at times plugging holes in midfield.

Crowe, I know. He is a tough nut, but a very different character. Will be interesting to see how he and pagan get along.

Foott is a bit of a worry. Obviously a late punt to develop into a much-neede key defensive role. But he is NOT quick, and I don't know whether he will bw able to mark as consistently in games as he steps up in the ranks.

This draft might not work, only time will teell, but they have appeared to TRY to get the right types to fill spots we know will need filling, and apart from Hale, we do noy have any players who will want to be going home in a couple of years.
