Just read/posted this in another thread, and thought it rated a mention.

It seems that opposition supporters will say we're full of hacks when we're losing, however when were winning, will say it is because we're full of top draft picks and Judd. However It got me thinking of our top draft picks:

Number 1's -Murphy, Gibbs, Kruezer.

Anyone who says that Kruezer will be the difference for us in the next year or so is kidding themselves. Gibbs is only in his second year, and is still young. Murphy is one of our most important players.

Number 2/3 - Walker, Judd.

Walker won't be fully fit until next year, Judd won't be fully fit to mid season.

Number 9 - Russell

In fairness, if it wasn't for russell, we wouldn't have any good topics some weeks. In serious, I actually like him, but undoubtably a fringe player.

Am I missing any?

Maybe not worth a thread, but I just think it is a myth that we're full of top draft picks. It is more annoying, as when we are performing, of course opposition supporters will then just say, "Anyone can win a premiership full of top picks"

Thinking about it, Ratten is doing a great job at getting the most from our players. The next few games are massive for us, and if we can pull a win or two off, I think he's done remarkably well this year.

Anyway, feel free to continue on if u can see this leading anywhere. Even if its just to vent at opposition supporters always contradicting themselves when it comes to us - I guess thats more what this threads about, and it annoys the sh^t out of me!

Great Point PPG this always annoys me when opposition supporters say this, they forget we've plucked players like fisher at pick 72 (close to that), simpson at #45, jamison off the rockie list, carrazzo rokie list, thornton rookie list, jackson rookie list, bentick rookie list and also a few shrewd trades with scotland (absoloute steal) and stevo (once again from collingwoods grasp:p), Hadley and I'm sure there's more.

We've probably utilised the rookie list and developed our players more than any other club over the last couple of years maybe bar hawthorn, who would have way more top picks than us surely?

Could anyone be bothered doing the Saints?
This is just going by memory because I can't be bothered looking it up :p

Pick 1's: Riewoldt, Goddard
Pick 2's: Koschitzke, Ball
Pick 5: Xavier Clarke
Pick 8: Raphael Clarke
Pick 9's: David Armitage, Ben McEvoy

I'm sure I've missed a couple or got a pick no wrong but think that's reasonably close.

I think in fairness you should only consider players in the top ten and those who are actually playing as top picks.

so id say

Pick1: Hodge
Pick2: Roughhead
Pick3: Ellis, Croad
Pick4:
Pick5: Franklin
Pick6:
Pick7: Lewis

And that would be it. But thats still only one less top 10 pick playing in their squad.

Michael Gardiner pick numero uno :p

the cornerstone of the afl is the draft and equalisation

it's inevitable teams will have early draft picks, we are no different.

Another fact you may consider that Walker and Russel were picked up in what were considered "Weak" drafts.

If we had the no 2 and 9 pick in the same draft years that Judd was around or the Murphy/Franklin drafs etc we'd have some good players!

Not that i dislike Walker and Russel but in a strong draft these 2 picks could of reaped us some super talent.

A good player such as Tambling or Meesen?

Jordan Russell was picked in the Franklin draft. ;) :o

Eddie Betts was picked in the PSD in the 2004/2005 draft, yet he has turned out a better player than most of the players picked after the top ten. :thumbsu:

Sack Wayne Hughes.

The 2004 draft was just average after the first seven players.

The top ten was weakened due to Cloke, Morton and Smith being father-son picks.
