Keen to know of all these clubs playing 4 small forwards.
Hawthorn have Ginnivan Moore Watson

Dogs have McNeil West Baker Garcia Vandemeer

GWS have Greene McMullin Jones Bedford (have also had Harvey Thomas and Bret Daniels)

Brisbane have Ah Chee Bailey Cameron and have Lohmann out injured who generally plays a hybrid small role

Fremantle Switkoski Bolton Frederick and Reid

Geelong Mannagh Stengle Close Miers

Our small forwards last night were Sheldrick Campbell Papley McInerney (187cm playing small)

My belief, not a universal truth but I'm tired of having too many running athletes playing with reckless abandon, relying on luck and, falling apart when the going gets tough (however it manifests).

Again, just a belief, I would trade out a few and try to recruit some solid bodied mentally tough muthas who value results.

Edit (add).
I also wanna see some work on our structures, we never seem to be where we need to be positionally.

where to start? Anyone with any kind of niggle gets surgery/etc, shut them down. Play Snell, Datolli, cleary Green even. Have to be brutal and ask if any of the older crew are going to get us anywhere next 2-3 years. Get a new strength trainer, or put pressure on players to harden up. I know our draft isd kinda set with the Acadamy guys, but we need some speed. Probably thoughts for the draft thread really, but in reality our season was over a while ago.

The moment an opponent gets a run-on against us, we fold.

Port, GF, Crows, Suns and GWS games - all the same pattern.

It’s a consistent theme - we are incapable of resisting when an opponent surges.

And that is mental.
They don’t get that’s the problem and finding excuses

Blaming injuries and not seeing the issue

We were good enough for 1 half so talent isn’t the issue

The run ons and unable to hold momentum has been happening for years even with a full list

I was there mate. Nothing mirrors watching it live

Fire Elmo GIF
I was at the port game

As embarrassing as the 2024 gf was that experience truly shocked me and as such I find it hard to be overly optimistic about the team
Where did you play cricket at? I’m also a cricketer.
Played grade for Gordon and Sydney university in Sydney

We've actually become a case study for sports and group psychology

And our list might be about to fall off a cliff

And the psychologist we hired had some interesting opinions

What a time

plenty of come from behind wins last year eg geelong at home when they had a run on

i guarantee if we had amartey or even mclean out there, the game would've been iced

at 3qt time we were still in touching distance and hamling off injured

hogan kicks 2 in the 4th to make the margin too big

its really not that grim lol

we had a half powered fwd and back line, you could even argue our fwd line is at 1/4 strength

Just less damaging to trail all
game, that start was special , as people say it shows the ability is there.

Interesting take - being outscored 73-2 shows the ability is there?

I think it just shows good sides can whack us when they decide to press the button, because the talent isn’t there & what talent there is has too many mental demons.

Getting the lead in the first place they have some sort of ability to some degree. Not claiming it's a premiership side

I dunno. I've also got a flu and drugged up lol so who knows 😂

They aren't a bunch of complete spuds. I mean if i got to the trade thread and suggest we trade Gulden , Warner , Heeney, Campbell Rowbottom Papley etc people will say no way. So are they good or not!

Maybe i just want to believe, the first half was great, if they suck how did it happen ?

I think GWS just has a lot more talent than we do.

They haven’t butchered all their first round picks. That helps.

Hope you feel better soon!

Yep agree doesn't mean we stink though ?

I didn't claim we were the best side in it, just we have some decent players to work with .

If we ditch the tagger role, Jordan doesn't have a role in the team going forward,
GWS ditched the tagger role for Bedford 7 weeks ago & their game has gone to another level, but unlike JJ, Bedford has pace & can play creative roles. JJ kicks goal on the odd occasion but it's by catching a disrespectful opponent out, but that's usually against the rubbish teams.
I’m much less negative about him.

It’s. I shame to be beaten by Callaghan. On the other hand he’s done very well against others and often plays very impressively as a link player.

I’m much more doubtful about our ability to mark the ball. We found ourselves in a. Bind last night as Taylor and Buckley played two on one on Francis and marked everything deep and we couldn’t hit a target when going shallow.

It was compounded by not being able to mark the ball or even slow the ball movement from the giants.

All season I’ve accepted the threadbare nature of the list and seen that as a major reason for our failings - as it was last night.

But - and here it is - we have pretty much our first choice midfield. And when the pressure is on they get smashed. And that’s been the case all year.

Finding a replacement for Kennedy is the issue that’s caused us the biggest issues but behind that is replacing sam Reid and then Dane rampe of 2016-2022

Yeah, but we had our full-strength midfield last night. And got obliterated.

Some good individual players - but right now as a unit, they do kinda stink.

Agree . Individually there's some good players but that's why i think you have to be bold at the trade table.

I can't be bothered but if you laid out a next premiership 22 who's a lock and who should we be using to improve the side .

Last night proves one thing, and that is Cox has not coached the issues we have out of us yet.

This is about the run on the in third, that’s the issue. Not small forwards, not backline deficiencies, not midfield two way running…,those things all stood up for a half, just as they did against the GC.

Our problem is how we have prepared for when sides get a run on, what’s the strategy, who takes control, who needs the ball is his hands. What do we do.

You can paint it how you like but there is a big coaching issue there if we don’t know how to stop a run on like the 3rd. I’ll give you one hint, it isn’t with zone defence. Structurally we are exposed when this happens so where does it go wrong? We don’t seem to have addressed it.

First half would have been good.

You forget how late in the third they actually took the lead

I said in the match thread when it was 56-54 that I thought they’d have a lead but so long as it didn’t get to 3-4 goals we’d have a chance -

The 3-4 goals was too big and we started playing expansively - with Errol turning it over into the centre corridor because we needed to win to make finals no doubt.

So to my mind the problem was the midfield who for 4-5 centre bounces in a row just had the giants come out the front and put battered defence being unable to defend over and over and over

At the risk of quoting myself - if we had will day or lachie neale or Matt Rowell or dangerfield there is no way we’d have these 10 goals on the bounce happen so quickly. Wed at least get our hands on the. All a few times with the opportunity to slow the game and keep the ball

Surely Heeney is this guy at least

He can't do it on his own
