Was only around 4 or 5 years ago we were one of the slowest sides in the competition and with a recent binge on recruiting some speedsters that can actually play we are one of the quickest sides if not the quickest side going around and are learning to use it.

Defence:

Genuine pace
Bower and Walker are genuine speedsters who run and carry and are out, with them back in to join the likes of Armfield, Russell and Lucas things look really good.

Good Pace
Jamison and Joseph are not far off being in the fastest group, they are pretty damn quick.

Medium:
Thornton is our slowest defender, White is not to bad for pace but he's not up with the likes of the others mentioned. Johnson is not over quick either but is no slouch.

Midfielder:

Genuine pace
Judd and Simpson are probably our only midfielders with super pace. We have a lot of blokes who are above average without being super quick.

Good Pace
Murphy, Scotland

Moderate Pace
Gibbs, Carrazzo, Kreuzer, Grigg, Hampson

Slow
Mclean, Hadley, Jacobs, Warnock

Forward line

Fast
Garlett, Yarran

Good pace
Waite, O'hAilpin, Betts

Moderate Pace
Henderson, Robinson

Best 22 with pace:

B: Joseph Jamison Russell
HB: Walker Bower Armfield
C: Lucas Gibbs Simpson
HF: Yarran Waite Scotland
F: Betts O'hAilpin Garlett
OB: Kreuzer Murphy Judd
IC: Hampson Carrazzo White Houlihan

Waiting in the wings:
Labi and Buckley

Would be interesting to see this team play, I recon it would be one of the quickest teams to run out on a footy field. It's good to see that we are learning to use our pace and that getting it in our forward line quickly suites all forwards, especially the quick ones.

I recon that back line is scary fast and would cut most teams to pieces, as would the forward line if we get the ball in quickly.

It's also good to see that we are starting to play a game of footy that supports pace, with our run and carry with numbers around the ball carrier, fast movement into our forward line and using the long kick to space.

Tonight against the Saints was great but with Bower and Walker out, our two fastest and best defenders we could have made it look a whole lot uglier for the saints.

I think it's really going to make it tough for guys like Mclean, Grigg and Hadley who haven't got great pace. Also Thornton who is slow and slow to move the ball on (make decisions). It'll be hard for them as they don't fit our game plan which involves being able to chase, pressure, run off your man into space, carry the ball and go with your man.

With the way the game is played now pace is a must. Especially with the way all the players crowd the ball when it is at one end and how they break when it's turned over and run forward hard. Plus it's great to watch.

good post, just a quickie, shaun grigg is pretty quick, and hammer is the fast sprinter at the club

Agreed... I would actually move Kreuzer and Hampson up a notch in the midfield and Setanta up one in the forward line.

We have a very serious team there with pace to burn and I would love to get that team out on the field one day against the bummers...

When Buckley moves onto our list and into our 22, the mosquito fleet will well and truly be back.

And I love it.

We've mostly had slow players with Camporeale and Whitehead added to the 1994 squad to give us badly needed pace.

It's been a great change.

I think Hampson has more than moderate pace. ;)

For a KPP, Henderson isn't as fast as Watts, Fevola and Franklin, but he is as quick as Murphy and Browne.

Hendo will be better for the run once he's had a full pre-season.

yep, didn't mean to have Grigg in the moderate group, looking more for football pace rather than test results. By that I mean players who play with good pace and use it during a game, not blokes who can do well in a sprint trial, so much.

I don't think we really had this game plan V Essendon last time, it will be interesting.

Syd Jackson was meant to be a very classy, quick player as well, we have a history in the past of having those brilliant small's "The Mosquito Fleet"

On Game Day last night, Ratts was asked who was the quickest between Betts, Yarran & Garlett - he hesitated a bit before nominating the Yazz. IMO Garlett looks the quickest.
It's great to finally have a quick, skilful side instead of plodders like Bentick, Plunkett etc
Go BLUES:)

Definelty a lot quicker side. But the biggest thing is quick ball movement. Handballing to players on the move rather than flat footed. Playing pagans paddock releases Betts, Gartlett and Yaz.

We looked slow against essendon because we didnt run both ways.

Carlton had a decent side, but lacked the big, power forwards that were so popular in the time. His only legitimate marking target was Mark ''Sellers'' Maclure. Hence Maclure was sent to centre half-forward where his high work rate and great competitiveness came to the fore. If he could not mark, he brought the ball to ground. Enter the Mosquito Fleet.

"These blokes run at a different level. They're high octane,'' Sheldon said. "You've got electricity, a dash of genius, explosive pace and change of pace. It is (exciting) when it's rolling, there's no question. They're trained and tuned to another level. We were trained to the level that was sufficient in our day, but these guys are at a far superior level. It's so enjoyable to watch when they're on song.''

"I'd say if Carlton moves the ball quickly, they're almost unplayable, almost unmatchable,'' Maclure said yesterday.

"It's a matter of consistency. I saw the Collingwood game and it was a different game-style. But if it's on, I don't care who they're up against, it's going to be difficult.''

It could be a tad premature if they don't perform this week and they believe the hype. ;)

Once-shaken Betts now a model Blue
"I think I am a leader with the indigenous guys down there. I know I have to take more responsibility in the forward line. All us indigenous boys there have a close bond, particularly the three of us in the forward line. Jeff and Chris share a house but they come around for dinner to my place all the time. And Joey Anderson from the back line he comes over, too. But I am the boss.Andrew Walker is indigenous too and he is the oldest down there at Carlton so I look up to Andrew and all the boys look up to me and Andrew but I am still the boss overall."

I bet you Kenny is now feeling a bit sheepish for letting Sam go in the draft a year earlier than the Blues wanted... With Dylan joining us next year and Setanta's little helpers...

Man that would have been an awesome mosquito fleet :)

We probably would have picked Browne who had a good carnival, but it would have been great to have Sheldon and Buckley together again at Carlton.
