What is "VLAD" going to compensate us with , band 2 or 3?
Palms is reported by various newspapers & the like to be on 2.1 million big ones, over 4 years. Now considering bock & brown are on less money and are 4 to 5 years younger than palms,we should not receive anything less than what bock & brown got. I can see us getting a band 2.

Band 2 would be great. It seems like more than we should get to me, but in terms of their formula, it fits.

I can't see us getting band 2. I'd be content with band 3.

Irrespective of what GC paid some players, I don't think $500k per year for Palmer is all that much. They are grossly overpaying him, but I don't think it is enough to elevate him to band 2 status.

If we expect band 2 for Palmer, then what the hell do Ward, Davis and Scully command? All of whom are reported to be on far more coin than Palmer, and all of whom would be considered more attractive players for the future.

Am I right in thinking that band 2 is a pick after your first rounder, and band 3 is at the end of the first round? If that's correct it certainly won't be band 2 and will either be band 3 or band 4.

Even the likes of Mark Robinson who wouldn't watch a lot of Freo games is aware that he was a fringe player so if we get band 2 I'll do backflips.

We'll hopefully find out in the next week to help the club with list management.

This is all rather confusing.

My understanding was that the AFL has a "formula" to work out the compensation. That suggests an objective test. If that is the case, then it doesn't matter whether Palmer was considered, subjectively, by Mark Harvey to be a "fringe player" or the "second coming of Jesus". They simply look at his age/draft pick/contract value/etc and determine a band.

There should not even be a debate on these boards.
I think the AFL needs to clarify what the rule is.

i have listed the official formula found on the afl website below

(((Age+salary+games played)/(awards won)) multiplied by the SFOC)

SFOC- screw freo over clause

*NOTE: may not actually be the official formula used

Yes you are right in thinking that.

Click (Goldcoast club major revenue assumption)and it will download a power point. Open the power point and It has on page 3 where it shows a line going down the the western bulldogs name. It is called a first round pick but it's basically band 2

Band 2 is a pick to be immediately used after your first round pick.

Although palmer has had an ordinary year - if he had signed/come to some agreement with GWS at the end of last season surely they must calculate the compensation based on his form/ability at this point. Which you could only really judge on the fact that he was pick 7, rising star and our best mid in his year one, plus the knee injury/rehab etc. Combine this with his salary and band 2 doesn't seem too far fetched. Band 3 is effectively pick 19 ish, which is hardly fair for someone on greater than 500k at his age.

However I see the AFL falling back on Palmer as band 3 so they can say Ward is worth more at band 2. Band 4 would be an outrage however.

Compensation picks
As per the rules with Gold Coast, the compensatory pick would be assessed around the player’s age (greater weighting for younger players), club contract ranking (greater weighting for club key players), on field performance (greater weighting for strong club best and fairest performance) and draft position if less than four years experience.

This ranking system will then determine if a club is eligible for a compensatory pick in one of five spots -- first round pick, end of first round pick, second round pick, end of second round pick or third round pick. Under the model, the round one, round two or round three picks would be taken immediately after the pick the club already has in that round in the draft that year.

Palmer

Age - 22
Club contract ranking - Est. 2.1mil over 4 years (500k a year)
On field performance - 4th B & F 2008, practically nothing since then.
Draft Position - 7th ND (Just fits in under the 4 year rule).

I think we are a good chance for band 2.

I reckon that's nonsense, we certainly got **** all on inception but since then the AFL have looked after us because it's in their best interest for Freo to be succesful.

Getting the 4 points for sirengate, very little penalty for breaching the cap in 2001, and the Leigh Brown pick being 3 examples of the AFL ruling in our favour.

I take "Club contract ranking" to mean where he ranked in the pecking order at Fremantle. How can his contract at GWS be relevant, they only have 4 players so he's in the 4 highest paid players on their list.

Well that wouldn't be helpful, because he has only had two contract extensions since he was drafted (One which was very early after he was drafted) The second if I recall correctly not long after he did his knee. This into account the fact that he has been listed for 4 or less years, wouldn't it be based around his draft pick?
I can't see his injury discounting his value too much, as GWS knows the history and still signed him on a four year deal reportedly for just over 500K per year.
Just out of curiousity how would his 500K contract sit him on contract value at Fremantle now? Surely only Sandilands and Pavlich (Mundy probibly as well) would be on more than that wouldn't they?

we won sirengate fair and square, four points was ours no matter what. pick 3 was them looking after us for sure, but now that we are one of the most profitable clubs watch their care factor wane..... the afl screws us week in week out with the umpires anyhow..

So you figured I was full of shit KPR? ;)

took me a while, but got there eventually :D

I'd say on that money he'd be our 4th highest paid player as you suggested behind Pav, Sandi and Mundy.

What about if we guaranteed trading the pick to GWS for O'meara and all the late picks they won't use. It would mean pick 2 next year if we got a band2. That way if it was a line ball call there would be incentive for the afl to go the higher band.

Then trade the first pick to lions for Clark and we are set.

An interesting comparison Palmer is 22, less than 4 yrs on an AFL list, taken as a 1st round draft pick winner of the rising star award and offered $500k a yr.

Harbrow last yr was 21, less than 4yrs on an AFL list, taken in the rookie draft and offered $500k a yr.

The Bulldogs were given an end of first round compensation pick we definitely should be in line for at least this but probly more as Palmer has won a major award and was also taken in the first round so surely we will get a more than band 3!!!!

No it would not be pick 2 because the band 2 pick is locked to your pick position no matter what.

They don't take into the accounts of the awards a player has won. You want get band 2.
