They have been sensational leaders for the club in their own respective rights. Who would you take irrespective of their skill levels?

Tough one mate but Kelly did the work to turn the club around from a basket case and early on led a lot of poor players and tried to inspire them.

Kelly.

i love kirk, but kelly.....nothing really to debate....

Both had different attributes good and bad but IMHO they were both as equally as good as each other,so it's a tie.

Agree, Kelly was a quicker run the lines type player who had tremendous courage facing the oncoming player whereas Kirk is an infighter but I reckon Kirk gets a lot more of it close to goals.

Dead heat, cant pick it.

Kelly let his play do the talking and inspired team mates, but kirk is a vocal player. He should be the sole captain of the club. There have been plenty of games where without his vocal input and display of courage we would have been beaten.

I loved kells, but i personally find Kirky more inspiring.

I named my cat kirky btw.

As footballers, Kelly gets the nod. I don't think even he was the most naturally blessed player for talent, though his marking ability and blistering speed made him stand out. Both of them have got everything possible out of themselves in terms of performance vs natural ability.

As leaders, I don't think you can split them. Both completely inspirational.

One thing amazing about Kirk is his durability and endurance. It is years since he missed a game through injury. In fact, has he missed a single game since Roos took over and realised the folly of Eade's attitude towards Kirky? And it's not as if he's a player standing away from the packs, away from the crash and bash.

And while most of his first halves are pretty good, it is in the second half of games that he has been sensational. While other players tire around him, he just keeps pumping away, having more and more influence as the game goes on. The way he's going, he could keep going for another four or five years, easily. It's not like he's going to lose any pace as he gets older.:D

okay, i'll concede it IS worth the debate....and both are inspirations....AND i agree kirk should be the sole captain, and it shoulda been that way after stuey went....and (another and) kirk is remarkably tough and durable....what he must endure every weekend would surely sideline most....but i still reckon on pure football ability, kelly gets the nod

I've been pondering this for a while now - ever since 2003. And I don't think it would have been imaginable to give the nod to Kirk over Kelly even a few years ago.

But I've now watched Kirky lift a team against seemingly impossible odds in two Grand Finals now, and he did it not only by leading by example as Kel was so masterful at doing, but he also did it by moving amongst the troops and really getting them up and about. And his 3 qtr speeches are now the stuff of legend, and not even Kelly could get that sort of influence on a game.

Kelly was about the greatest player I've ever seen for guts and determination. But I think I'm now leaning towards Kirky for the leadership nod.

God we've been lucky to have these two guys in the Red and White. The fans who haven't seen them week in week out just don't understand how good they've really been :thumbsu:

Thought about raising this on RWO earlier. I think that Kirk gets closer to Kelly stature with every game this season. Drags the team back into contention late, time after time. The goal against the Duckers was a captain's goal if ever there was one.

If he continues his current form for the rest of the season, he's there IMHO.

that's true....kirk more than anyone else this season has stood tall while most of the rest of the lads have looked out of form or just disinterested....going back to last year's GF, he has hoisted us on to his shoulders and kept going....he looks like he is absolutely shattered after every game, and has said as much in recent weeks, but he just keeps on going....i'm starting to think he's up on the same shelf as kel

sorry to be wet blanket... different eras, and circumstances, but how easily we forget!

Kirk is the captain but it is good to have one back one forward and one in the middle!

Arguably Kirky has fought against the odds as well delisted blah.. blah... but I reckon still Kirky aspires to have the guts and ability of ^

Agree about different era comparisons being almost impossible, but I fully expect that Kelly will be elected to the AFL Hall of Fame, and Kirk probably won't make it. Personally I think Kirk is the best skipper going around at the moment hands down, not to say that Kelly wasn't one of the best of the modern era either.
