Hello, and welcome to my first ever phantom draft. Unfourtunatley I do not know the draftee’s as well as the past few years, but I thought I would have a crack. Feel free to post any criticisms or compliments, but be mindful that I am not a recruiter and this is just my opinion based on my limited knowledge of the draftee’s and each team’s positional needs.

4. West Coast
What they need: Everything from the head coach down
Tom Lynch
Surprise! Tall forward with heaps of everyone’s favourite buzz word, upside. He is raw and could use a bit more weight, but has plenty of potential and after almost exclusively recruiting smalls the past 3 seasons, west coast must go tall I this draft, and history suggests the best key forwards tend to go early. Also appeals due to his height and leap, allowing him to pinch hit in the ruck, which will become very valuable next year with the sub rule
Others considered: Jack Darling, Andrew Gaff, Jared Polec
5. Brisbane
What they need: Young Midfielders and maybe a key forward
Andrew Gaff
Brisbane will need to replace ageing midfielders Simon Black and Luke Power, and Gaff will fit in very well in the engine room. I initially had Heppell, but decided he is similar to Rich, while Gaff adds massive endurance, and will often find himself on the end of Rich and Drummonds kicking before sending the ball inside 50. Has a lot of Class about him, is capable of winning his own ball and smashed draft camp. Safe pick, will be a very good player
Others Considered: Heppell, Polec, Atley
6. Richmond
What they need: Height would be a priority, but it might be a bit of a reach
Dyson Heppell
Breaks lines, with long kicking a feature. Will start on a half back flank, which I believe is a position that Richmond could reinforce, and will move into the midfield eventually, possibly starting of as a rotation with Cotchin. I think Richmond has a rather offensive midfield, and Heppell will add a bit more discipline as well as his offensive traits. Plenty of potential to work with as well.
Others Considered: Polec, Atley, Gorringe
7. Gold Coast
What they need: anything
Jared Polec
Super exciting SA boy with heaps of potential and X factor. The only query is his consistency, but his massive hurt factor makes up for his lower possession rate than other potential draftees. He is extremely good in traffic with his evasiveness and acceleration a feature. With Bennell on one wing and Polec on the other, Gold Coast could have the most feared centreline in the competition in the future.
Others Considered: Gorringe, Atley, Darling
8. Essendon
What they need: Inside mids, a bit of class in the centre square, well stocked for KPP
Shaun Atley
Was torn between Atley and Caddy, as I think Essendon needs an inside mid to help Jobe Watson, however I went with Atley due to his speed and agility. His awareness and decision making is also a feature. The only query I have seen or heard is with his kicking, but I don’t think it’s that bad and can be corrected at AFL level, also there are a number of AFL players whose kicking skills are not that great but they have other strengths, and Atley has plenty of them.
Others Considered: Gorringe, Caddy, Smith
9. Gold Coast
Daniel Gorringe
They have the best midfielders in the draft; they might as well get the best ruck. Gorringe is likened to Cox as capable as a link man, and his tap work is excellent. He is a bit light for the bash and crash role, so will need to bulk up, and I am concerned about his height, as he is a tad short for AFL standard ruckmen, but he will probably grow.
Others Considered: who cares they are going to get them anyway
10. Gold Coast
What they need: anything
Kieran Harper
Is he consistent enough? Does he work hard enough? These are the risks that the Gold Coast can afford to take here. A very high risk high reward situation, with Harper potentially an excitement machine, mercurial half forward flank who makes the hard seems easy and the impossible seem possible, but does he do it often enough, or have enough impact in games? Has a lot of class. Strategically picked in the middle so he is less likely to be remembered if he is a dud.
11. Gold Coast
What they need: anything
Pat McCarthy
Key defender who is capable both defending and launching attacks on the rebound. Tad light so won’t be able to go head to head with the monster full forwards yet, but has plenty of ability and is more than capable athletically. May just complete the Suns spine after they drafting several midfielders and Day.
12. Melbourne
What they need: Have a lot of talent, probably will be looking to go tall
Lucas Cook
The way I see it Melbourne really set up their smalls at last years draft and will be looking to go tall, and would consider Darling however I see him as similar to Jack Watts as a stay at home full Forward (although more in the jack Riewoldt mould.) Melbourne will take the All Australian centre half forward as their lead up target. Has great endurance and reads the ball in the air. Has versatility, which is vital in the modern game
Others Considered: Darling, Lycett, Pitts
13. Gold Coast
What they need: anything
Jack Darling
Where will he go? From a top 3 pick to slider in just one season, Darling will be the most interesting pick from a neutral point of view. Super competitive key forward who can push into the midfield ala Matthew Pavlich, however has many knocks on him after a poor season following his stellar year as an underage in 2009. Questions about his height and capacity to develop, as well as his head injury after some hero jumped him. A bit of a risk, but the Gold Coast can afford to take them, and he would complement Day well as the twin towers. Being on the Gold Coast would also remove him from the limelight, which could be beneficial
Others Considered: Caddy, Smedts, B.Smith
14. Adelaide
What they need: outside Mids, however they are relatively well stocked on youth so best available
Brodie Smith
Adelaide has a variety of young talent, and will go best available, which just so happens to be a local boy. Smith could go higher, however did not have the greatest draft camp, depending on how you read into the results. His clean hands are a feature, as is his ability to break away from a contest. Works well in traffic and has good height for a midfielder. Adelaide would be stoked with this pick.
Others Considered: Pitts, I. Smith, Caddy
15. Geelong
What they Need: Will take bits of everything to get some youth in, so best available, with Mid primary concern
Josh Caddy
Geelong will bring in more youth and Caddy will form a potent combination with Joel Selwood to win more hardballs than they will lose. Athletically more than capable, and his physical work is first rate. May be a bit to similar to Selwood, but a best available pick, and Geelong will be very happy to have him, a bit of slider really, could have gone much earlier
Others Considered: Lycett, I.Smith, Watson
16. Port Adelaide
What they Need: have some young guns, especially inside mids which is why an outside runner would be a priority
Jayden Pitt
Port are a bit of a tricky one, however I think with Hartlett and Boak, port could use a young running winger/ half back flank to complement these blokes in the future. Capable of playing inside and out, he has great foot skills and decision making. Could be a star as he has massive upside (love that buzz word)
Others Considered: I. Smith, Watson, Lycett
17. North Melbourne
What they Need: Outside pace and foot skills to compliment inside brigade
Isaac Smith
Bolter and a half, where did this guy come from? Much like the pick before, North seem to be stocked with inside mid and could use some outside pace, and Smith should be the first mature age bloke picked this year. Reminds me a lot of Jetta last year, in that he is a late bloomer and will make an impact in his first season. Should really complement Cunnington and Ziebell and give North another attacking dimension to their onball brigade
Others Considered: Watson, Smedts, Prestia
18. Carlton
What they Need: surely must go tall here
Matthew Watson
Carlton will finally stop in their quest to field a team of 18 midfielders and pick up a strong KPD in Watson here. Is already build so could do a Hurley and have an immediate impact. Queries over his pace have been alleviated when he tested well. Will allow Waite to play forward and also give Carlton an attacking option on the rebound
Others Considered: Lycett, Smedts, Tape
19. Hawthorn
What they Need: a young ruckman/ KPD/ small forward if Rioli goes into the middle
Scott Lycett
Hawthorn trading in David Hale suggests to me they need a ruckman, and therefore there are no surprises here. Lycett could have easily gone to Port and Hawthorn will jump at the young Ruckman. Agile and quick for a ruckman, he is also more than capable of going forward and kicking a few goals. Is already pretty solid, so could be given a taste of the big-time next year. A very good prospect
Others Considered: Lamb, Tape, Smedts
20. Fremantle
What they Need: have a lot of youth, and would be looking to go tall, but would be a bit of a reach and Smedts is easily best available
Billie Smedts
Don’t know much about him, other than he seems to have slid a long way. Versatile player who seems to be the complete package, is probably a little unknown due to not having any super standout qualities. Could play as a quarter back or accompany Hill on the wing if Morabito goes into the centre square. His vision, agility and Football nous are all features. A safe pick, but one Freo would be very happy about.
Others Considered: Lamb, Tape, Mitchell
21. Sydney
What they Need: not lot really, will probably go best available, with midfield priority
Mitch Hallahan
Have a huge amount of young talent, and trade very well. Was going to go with outside mid, but with Jetta and Rohan they have that covered, probably have plenty of inside Mids but with Kirk going and considering best available it seems the logical choice. Lacks pace, but makes up for it as a bulldozer of an inside mid who thrives on the contest and constantly fights for the hard ball. Will be the sort of player that won’t be recognised much in the Supercoach points, or have a highlight reel, but will still impact games massively.
Others Considered: Prestia, Lamb, Mitchell
22. Western Bulldogs
What they Need: this guy
Mitch Wallis
23. Geelong
What they Need: could continue rebuilding midfield or go tall if that is best available
Seb Tape
Unsure whether he will be capable of holding down a KPD position due to his height as he may need a couple more centimetres, however other than that he is just about perfect as a tall defender or even rebounding third tall. Capable of closing down forwards easily in the air, and more than adept at ground level, will be a very good player when Scarlett retires to fill that position, and may fill other roles until then.
Others Considered: Prestia, Lamb, Conca
24. St Kilda
What they Need: outside pace and foot skills,
Dion Prestia
Height is over rated in football. Prestia could go anywhere in this draft, however the Saints will be looking for an outside mid both now and in the future and there aren’t many better than this. Has been rumoured to be on Essendon’s radar at pick 8, but there is better talent available there, and due to his short stature he will probably slide a bit. Saints will be very happy with this pick, and could play in the forward line in 2011
Others Considered: Andreolli, Conca, Mitchell
25. Brisbane
What they Need: a future KFP to replace brown and Fev in the near future, assuming Clarke stays in the ruck
Luke Mitchell
Maybe a little bit of a reach however with Brisbane has an array of Midfielders now they have Gaff and should look to go tall here. Mitchell is a tall, agile KPF who could start deep or higher up. Will have time to develop with Brown and Fev still occupying the key forward spots but will be ready to go by the time they are retired. Has great height and a very good set of dukes that will make him very hard to beat in the air, and his ground level skills are capable as well. A bit of a risk, but could be a high return.
Others Considered: Lamb, Litherland, Conca
Sliders
Lamb -could not find a spot for him, but he won’t slide this far
Conca - do not know enough about him to judge him
Parker- unsure whether he will be first round
