For those thhat haven't seen it - IMHO one of the funniest threads of the year so far.

Good to see the Pies supporters taking the loss so calmly...

(Dang I wish we had managed to get Paddy Ryder - there are some darn fine young West Aussies going around for other teams at the moment.)

There's no reason for Michael Johnson not to play to the same level as Ryder other than attitude.
Ryder is bit taller, lighter, a faster sprinter and generally more desperate around the ground, whilst Johnson is more of an endurance athlete.

FWIW - I just came back from the derby at Freo Oval, and one Peter Bell played for some of the game on the EF big man, Robert Young (the same one that stood over an unconscious Jeffrey a couple of years back and made a kicking gesture at him). Held his own against a guy who is a foot taller than him, by being tougher, smarter and bettererererer.... ;)

Belly even won the medal for BOG. :thumbsu:

And what a cracker of a game it was!

Surely there would only be 2 or 3 centimetres and kilos between them? Desperate around the ground relates to attitude/commitment doesn't it?

Johnson used to play in the ruck for Perth.

While they are different in style, this is the only substantial difference at the moment, IMHO. Surely heart and commitment are at least partly teachable?? If MJ had such great commitment and dynamisim in 2005 and 2006, how has he gone backwards??

God I miss the WAFL - especially good old fashioned derbies.

My last few years in Freo (mid 90s) a lot of the WAFL games only had 2000-2500 attending (paid tickets) - and even then that was only if the weather was good. From what I hear attendances are a lot better now, which is great to see. Geez I wish Belly and Wiz still played for us.

Would've been close to 10K people there today I reckon. But then I am crap at guessing crowd numbers. Might've only been 5K - but I know there was a lot; and it was a great atmosphere. :thumbsu:
