Petracca signs until the end of 2029

Richmond would never offer a 7 year contract to anyone would they 🤔

If the Dees were worried they'd lose Petracca then it's a really good deal. If he was never gonna leave, then they've paid overs. We were really concerned we'd lose Dusty, hence the Godfather deal. And thank christ we did the 7 years - I'd hate to have to go through all of that 2017 gobshyte again next year if we'd only done the 5 year deal.

I reckon he could have got more money elsewhere and also probably screwed a bit harder onto Melbourne for more money to stay.

That he did neither is a reflection of a big cultural shift at Melbourne, and also a statement of leadership from the man himself.

Out of contract in his 30s? Cats to have a sniff surely.

That's the whole thing though - even on shorter deals I don't think Petracca would be getting any less - if anything the longer deal gives the club certainty and flexibility with the cap to be able to sign other players (Oliver & Kozzie in another 2 years, Jackson next year) or chase players from other teams (just as an example Zach Merrett or someone else). It also gives certainty to other players who may considering whether to sign on with MFC either as a contract extension or new signing.

You've done well. Petracca's become a terrific player and you're in for a real treat watching him for the next decade or so.

He’s 25. The contract is 8 more years *after* 2021. When at the peak of his powers Mark Mercuri signed a 5-year deal at 27yo in 2001 that crippled the Bombers. When at the peak of his powers Kouta signed a 5-year deal at 30yo that crippled the Blues. He’s a gun player, but what is in effect a 9-year deal for a 25yo is irresponsible list management. As an example Brett Deledio barely missed a game up until 29yo… and then barely played after that. Cotchin barely missed up until 29yo and now has chronic hamstrings.

Imagine the Eagles gave their superstar Elliot Yeo a 9-year deal 2-years ago when 25yo … he’d have 7-years to go on $7m and no-one knows if and when he’ll play again. Dollars are fine for Petracca and a long-term deal also a great idea, but 9-years is just lunacy.

Don’t care if he retires in two years and we pay had to pay him out. Forever a hero to our team.
Haha, this is a man in the post-premiership afterglow. I recognise it well, I was exactly the same in 2017 and said out loud numerous times if we win the flag I don’t care if we go 0-22 next year.

Then by round 1 2018 I was “if we don’t beat Carlton tonight I’m going to self-harm” 😁

Enjoy, mate.

:tearsofjoy:I have little doubt this will happen, and one won’t be enough haha. But it’s damn good to have the fear and stress gone!

I just don't like contracts of this magnitude, no matter who the player. So many things can go wrong in the interim.
I hate it too. But the reality was some team was going to come for Petracca and offer him 1.5 million a year as a free agent. Probably for 5 or even 6 years.

Melbourne extended him 18 months early for 900k a year and can lock in it and know their cap is manageable.

Apart from a Bontempelli type situation - captain, premiership player, already getting multiple marketing deals - the big superstars are going to be seeking massive contracts when they hit free agency and the only way for clubs to reduce the cap number is to lock in years to the deals.

The only way these contracts will stop is if the AFL changes free agency rules to open up more free agents to spread the money around AND brings in a max contract rule - maybe 5 years tops.
