Opinion Pick 1... is Cam Rayner

In response to lacesout, I can't remember having a poll on this topic in the past (but we might have).

I started this poll on the spur of the moment because the idea popped into my mind when I had a bit of time on my hands.

If noble is a man of his word, then it has to be Rayner. Draft for talent, trade for needs. Rayner is imo the most talented, is an afluent speaker, confident and has a degree of mongrel.

Does LDU and Alex Witherden come from a similar area? They may know each other from their junior years?
I am not real sure on the Melbourne-ish geography.
If we were to go with LDU, Hunter Clarke would be the perfect accompaniment. Dont think he will get to 15 though.

No but the media do read these threads and if they see something they like, they write it and continue to write it until the crap starts to seep through. Tough job being a recruiter - no doubt but. Hopefully they just form their own opinions and nail this and the next draft.

Saw an interview with fagan a while back where he talked about drafting for need, so perhaps that puts Dow and LDU ahead or Rayner , then it comes down to interview , who is likely to fit in and who is likely to stay

Sure is but if LDU’s family already have a house up there and it isn’t far from the beach (given he likes surfing doesn’t he?), these are good signs. Plus, he seems the best midfield prospect. But yeah, any of Raynor, LDU or Dow would be fantastic if they stick around longer than two years.

Probably not the best comparisons but for me with Rayner in the mix for pick one along with LDU and Dow, o ask myself what type of player would I prefer Selwood or Cyril. I’d take Selwood, he may not be as flashy as Cyril but far more output over the duration. So for me that means Rayner’s not the answer. Either Dow or LDU. It would seem Dow gives us a bit of both worlds and LDU is more toward the Selwood end of the spectrum. Therefore I take Dow.

On the Carlton board we have it as a 4-horse race for Dow/LDU/Rayner/Cerra

Partly no doubt because of his injuries. But I must say while some rate him highly I haven't seen any of the knowledgeable draft watchers who is prepared to put him in the no. 1 slot. Have you?

That's true. The other 3 have all been touted as no.1, with Rayner being the most common.

Meh. I watched that video earlier and as soon as I saw that I knew some posters would have a few things to say about it. The reality is 90% of draftees would "ideally" remain in their home state with family and friends. There are exceptions of course e.g. I reckon Matho was probably keen to move interstate and experience something new.

The reality is we have to go for the best talent and if that is Rayner we need to draft him. The reason being that you never know how draftees will react/settle once here anyway. Schache being the prime example as someone who seemed genuinely excited at the prospect of joining the Lions and 2 years later he is a Western Bulldog. Guys like LDU might send all the signals that they are happy to move to Brisbane, however, once here they may not like it. Rayner seems to be a confident young man who settles in well with whichever team he is placed in(I think Luke Power mentioned he has fit in seamlessly with all the teams he's played for e.g. Academy, Vic Metro ect.).

If we were to select Rayner or any of the other prospects for that matter, we should partner them up with former number 1 draft pick Luke Hodge to mentor them. With guidance/mentorship/leadership from the likes of Fagan/Beams/Zorko/Hodge I can really see guys like Rayner/LDU thriving and loving it here.
