He’s really trying to convince everyone as hard as he can that he wants to come to the club he supports haha. Good on him and good luck.

The Naughton thing is odd. I agree it reads like we have given him some sort of guarantee that if he gets to our pick we’ll take him, which is not Derek Hine’s usual MO. He is usually really cagey and won’t give f/s selections any sort of guarantee that if they get to a certain spot we’ll match the bid.

A couple of possible scenarios here:
1. Derek Hine has changed tack and given a guarantee (or Ned Guy has changed the way we do things)
2. We haven’t given a guarantee but Aaron Naughton has interpreted the conversations he’s had with us that we are keen enough to confident in getting to us.
3. He is trying to scare away Freo and/or other non-Melbourne clubs in order to get to Melbourne.

I’ll be interested in whether the article reflects the way he interviewed which could trigger a slide if we don’t take him at 6. There were rumours a couple of years ago that this sort of attitude is the reason that Laverde slid to 20. He interviewed badly, was adamant that he wanted to play for Essendon and Essendon wound up getting him with their second selection (which was admittedly only a couple of places behind their first one). Not saying he would get to our second selection, but still in such an even draft, if he does slide because of this, it could be a big one.

Agree with the comments above, that is quite the statement! Didn't seem unequivocal in his stance but definitely a strong preference, going by the video

Huge call if the top 5 blows up (Brayshaw to Bris and if North and Blues stay locked in with their choices from pre-draft) and as Pie 4 Life mentioned if someone we weren't expecting slips through..

I'm still on the gun mid preference at this pick though! But if it is Naughton I'm on board and will back him in

I would, getting drafted would be great, getting drafted by Collingwood would be awesome. Come on down, if not this year, two years time.

I think so. His marking is very good. He’s getting compared to McGovern who had his big knocks on his kicking when drafted and while he still isn’t the best kick he is very damaging. I would be hoping for that out of Naughton.

Some of his WAFL games his kicking was a lot flatter, I think he’s been working hard on it and hopefully will continue to advance.

Yeah he certainly has great set of hands aswll as a leap and reads the play beautifully.

That kicking is just so hard for me to get over with where our team is currently. In the AFL game the pressure and intensity is going to be magnified significantly compared to u18 champs or any WAFL game.

Very rarely do you go from that awkward/unco kicking style to a penetrative, fluent, beautiful field kick like Ben Reid.

That OR Hine has told we will pick him at 6 and he is Worried Freo might Pick at 5

I’d be chuffed as with Cerra, Petty, Wooller and Brown.

Can you sell me on Cerra? Reading Snoop Dog 's phantom write up for him I can't help thinking Sidebottom? Is he going to be better than SS in some aspect? Not a bad result by any means, I just want a Pendles, Martin, Fyfe or Dangerfield standard if we go a mid otherwise let's take a Pavlich (Fog), Birchall / Johannisen type with pace and run (Coffield). Doing otherwise just doesn't improve our best 22 overall by as much IMO (at least in short to medium term before we lose Wells & Pendles).

I still think we will be calling out Naughton at pick 6

Again not terrible selection but I think we improve our best 25-30 more by leaving Naughton aside and taking Fog, Coffield or someone else and as Apex suggests taking a reasonable KPD option at 38.

If we do take Naughton at 6 I’m going to be spending a lot of time re-reading TRS’s post below and hoping he’s always kicking long (ie our coachs instruct him to play to his strengths.)

I went back and had another look at Naughton and in particular, his kicking. It looks really awkward when he’s trying to spot up a short target; it’s as though he doesn’t really kick through the ball properly so it is slow moving and high in the air.

Kicking over distance he can get it a lot flatter and certainly has no issues getting distance. WA even used him for kick outs on occasion.

The other thing is, I don’t have any issues with his decision making either; he seemed to pick appropriate targets and not always the safest, lateral option for that matter. You just want him to cut down the hang time on the shorter spot-up kicks coming out of the backline.

Overall I’d be comfortable taking him at #6 if we go that way. He plays like a key position player unlike your 192cm tall back flankers, he’s a genuine KP size and going to fill out further, will be able to negate one of the opposition’s best key talls and take contested marks going back... that’s pretty valuable.

Where his decision making is I think he can be an adequate kick at AFL. He’s adapted well so far every time he’s gone up a level.

I’m not expecting him to kick the ball like Reid. I am expecting him to pass Reid in his intercept marking game though. If we get a crop around him that can kick the ball it’s not going to be as big as problem imo. Whether that happens will be the next question.

Honestly I can’t sell you on Cerra because I’m not completely sold on him myself. My main man is still Fogarty, and the only reason I was happy with the haul was because it included Petty, who’s my second favorite KPD behind Taylor, and Wooller, who’s very similar to Fogarty in that he’s a 193cm key forward who can go through the midfield. Under those circumstances I’m happy for a potentially elite mid at 6, but it’s hard to imagine things going that amazingly on draft day.

LOL.

To me, on his short kicks, he appears to flex at the hips and crane over the ball, perhaps to reduce the time of getting ball to boot. As a result his kicking power comes only from his hip flexors and he gets under it too much. When he’s kicking longer, he stands more upright and so can kick more using his quads in addition to the hip muscles, which gives him more power and the ball trajectory is much flatter.

He should be able to become a decent kick over short distances from behind the mark or if he has some space to work in (eg. after running/bouncing). Longer kicking should also not be a problem. If he is working in confined space I would expect he either throws it across the boot to simply clear the area, or a few short floaters unfortunately... that’ll be where he really needs to work hard.

Reid doesn't kick like Reid anymore o_O

Is Naughton your typical shut down defender type player? Or more of an intercept type like Lever? I think we need the former more. Already have plenty of intercept players. An elite one in Howe as well.
Can play both roles. Has great hands and is good 1v1.

There’s nothing wrong with being an intercept player provided you’re capable of being accountable for your direct opponent. That’s where Lever falls down and why he’s not worth even close to what Melbourne paid for him imo.

Heres three potential picks in action. Never heard of this Newman kid though. Maybe they mean Naughton.

#34 Ed Newman

Inside Midfielder/Medium Defender (Mentone Grammar/Sandringham Dragons)
12/03/1999 | 183cm | 80kg
Previous ranking: N/A

Scouting notes: Was one of the best player in the AGSV school boy competition for Mentone Grammar and was Australia’s 13th man on Boxing Day and Newman is a high level underage cricketer. Possesses a very clean left foot kick and is smart at the contest. Can play across half back and rebound the ball if required.

Last month: Made his TAC Cup debut with 10 disposals and three clearances against Oakleigh Chargers. Against the Dandenong Stingrays, he won the first centre clearance and propelled it long inside 50. He finished the day with four centre clearances to go with his 21 disposals and six marks. Didn’t play on the weekend due to sickness, but should be a certain starter in TAC Cup Finals.

I really value your assessment of footy TRS and this gives me hope on Naughton along with Snoops and Sco's thoughts. I liked him early year as a chance at our 2nd pick but that won't happen now. I must say I see someone who loops it far too much and fear we can't have another full back that can't kick. If we pick him I hope my assessment is wrong and he works out the issues he has.
That's fair enough, but those dinky little kicks are giving me flashbacks to our previous number 16, and not in a good way.
