More info please. I don't remember James Clement.
Ex-Freo, 2 b&fs at the pies playing half back, was brilliant at working his opponent under the footy. From memory the hands in back rule was changed at the end of 2006.

Craig Bolton (with some help from Leo Barry) brought in the tunneling rule.

Joel Bowden and Richmond beating Adelaide (2006) by chipping it around the backline all day lead to the AFL trialing automatic play-on if the ball is kicked backwards in the defensive half in the 2007 preseason cup with the intention of it possibly being included in the H&A season.

Bowden of course was a catalyst for the deliberate rushed behind rule and very nearly had 2 rules being created because of him.

Not so much a rule "change" as a rule "tightening" - the adjudication of jumper punches by the tribunal changed midway through this season after Trent Cotchin presented them with the last straw. After years of it being almost a legitimate way of clipping an opposition player, it's finally been officially outlawed.

And Hawkins the dopey bloke copped the brunt of it

The rule changes that I hate is the rushed behind rule.. caused by the Hawks in 08 and the rule Gary Rohan changed.. the contact below the knee which now stops a player going in and winning the ball...

3. 2009 Joel Bowden v. Essendon & 2008 GF Hawks who were adept at conceding a rushed behind to prevent a goal. Rule changed to prevent deliberate rushing of behinds.
Still the most bullcrap rule change. If they don't want players to rush it deliberately then why even have it as a rule.

Yeah Brereton for sure. One of the most significant changes of all, reducing the distance a player had to be from the ball to be legally "shepherded" from ten metres to five metres, was because of Brereton and his penchant for smashing into people in the vague vicinity of a team mate with the ball

With the current interest in Luke Shuey's free kick I thought it might be time to list players who have caused the rules to be changed.

1. Kevin Bartlett. Was adept at bouncing the ball the instant he was tackled to get a free kick. Rule was changed to make the act of bouncing part of possession.
2. Lindsay Thomas (Joel Selwood & Luke Shuey). Are adept at raising their arms when tackled to make the tackle too high. Rules changed to prevent that but perhaps needs some tweaking.
3. 2009 Joel Bowden v. Essendon & 2008 GF Hawks who were adept at conceding a rushed behind to prevent a goal. Rule changed to prevent deliberate rushing of behinds.
4. Jordan Lewis & Mark Blicavs. Were adept at getting advantage going 3rd man up at ball ups. Rules changed to prevent that. Unfortunately the changes were not thought through resulting in stupid outcomes.
5. Shaun Rehn. Did ACL in centre ball up. Linked to the rubber bounce pad that was then banned.
6. 2004 Jeff White, Michael Gardiner & Beau McDonald. Centre circle added to stop long run ups by the rucks which led to some PCL injuries. More info needed.
7. 2003 Lochlan Veale, through no fault of his own, didn't play a single game but I believe was the catalyst for a change to trade rules where you couldn't have a trade involving picks only. Back in the day there had to be a player involved so he went to the Bulldogs for pick 6 as a Box Hill reserves player.
8. Dane Swan. Rules changed to limit interchanges.
9. 2000 Michael Long hit on Troy Simmonds got penalties incurred in GF's to be doubled.
10. 2004 Alastair Lynch got GF penalties for retiring players converted to fines.
11. Blake Caracella injury caused front on bumps to be outlawed.

EDITED to include some of the contributions.
Any other nominations?

Buddy Franklin to allow his arc, umpires now decide on a player by player basis as opposed to a single interpretation

"Franklin's distinctive kicking style flies in the face of rule 16.3.1, which states: "Where a player is kicking for a goal after being awarded a mark or a free-kick, the kick shall be taken along a direct line from the mark to the centre of the goal line." - Hun

Nat Fyfe and 3 strike rule when he was suspended in 2014, coincidentally he would have been suspended twice (probably three times in the final incident as well) in 2015 had that rule not been bought in.

A combination of Lindsey Thomas and Adam Goodes below the knees action was a catalyst for the sliding rule

Lloyd - goal kicking routine began the changes which have led to the shot clock.

I think Paul Salmon had it over Lloyd.

Salmon would take a mark. Then slowly walk to where he would start his run up. Turn around and face goal. Place the ball between his feet. Pull up each sock to the very top. Tuck his guernsey into his shorts. Adjust the shorts and tackle. Pick up the ball. Take few deep breaths and then some three minutes after marking the ball start his amble towards goal. :)

Wasn't there actually some change in the late 90s (?) when rocket coached the swans and he was taking blokes off without replacing them and having them sneak back on the field around the boundary... or was that a cheese dream i had?

My recollection is that prior to this happening the interchange entrances were straight lines to enter and exit. Michael O'Laughlin left the field on the wrong side and when another player went on he could not return to the field for the rest of the game. Rocket gave him a mighty spray at the quarter break. They then changed the line marking to have diagonal markings as a result to reduce the risk of it happening.

Buddy and trade restrictions.

Oh never mind, that wasn't a rule change that was just some arbitrary one-off bullshit.
