Poached Cats: those gained and those lost

It all ended for Colby after that-mark-that-wasn't-paid against Adelaide, didn't it? Can't remember him doing much after that. Did Ayresey appoint him captain or did the match committee do it? Or did the players vote on it? I remember it caused a rift between some of the senior players and the rest, but being out of the country at the time makes my memories more based on hearsay rather than anything actual factual.

Barnesy leaving hurt me :(

It depends on whether we're talking about them being big outs and ins 'at the time', or whether they were in reality. Obviously I didn't understand all the crap going on behind the scenes with Murphy in 2001, but I thought he was pretty solid for the Cats up until that final game. Jason Mooney would have been considered a far, far bigger pick-up than Cameron at the time (although that's obviously not how it worked out). And Caddy was definitely a huge inclusion for us. Anytime a club gives up a first round pick for a player these days, it's a big deal.

Agree the INS and OUTS depend on how much you paid for them and how they were performing before they left.

For example Rivers did not cost us much as free agent and Hmac at pick 30 something was not overs for him and the risk we took given our ruck stocks at the time.

But Brian Peake for example was supposed to be a wonder boy who cost us plenty and who was really only just ok.

Recently you could only argue Ablett and Mumford have hurt us. So not too bad.

Ken Hinkley from Fitzroy was a pretty handy pick up that does not seem to be on the lists here.

Outs that hurt:
1973: Wade
1976 Rex Hunt
1986: Williams, Bolton, Toohey
1995: O'Reilly
2000: Colbert, Mansfield
2008: Steven King - seeing a "premiership player & former captain" playing for another club hurt!
2010: Mumford
2011: Ablett Jnr

Big Ins (whether they 'worked' or not):
1962: Farmer
1964: Marshall
1974: Rex Hunt - had an immediate impact at Cats
1975(?): Peter Featherby - massive in. WA recruit came via Footscray
1977: Malarkey
1981: Peake
1984: Jackson
1999: Tom Harley
2001: White
2001: Justin Murphy - big recruit, big potential, butarguably biggest failure
2005: Ottens
2013: McIntosh, Rivers
My additions are in red above
One more important one that has been shockingly forgotten, might not have been huge at the time but proved to be in the long run. Added him in blue (fittingly)

Kenny Hinkley.
Liam Pickering.

There were actually stacks of them through the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s, some good ins, some bad outs, some neither one thing nor the other.
Without listing and counting them, I think we've had more good ins than bad outs.

Seeing John Barnes, Sean Denham and Robert Scott win flags at other clubs hurt.

Not so hurtful, Ronnie Burns and Shayne Breuer.

Loats,arnotts biscuits,bamford ins:eek: .

Arnott wasn't that bad a player. Unfortunately for him, Bomber hated him for some reason. He regularly tore it up in the reserves, but rarely got a look in. He had some ripping games for us in 1999 though - 19 possessions and 3 goals vs North, 24 possessions and 2 goals vs Carlton, 36 possessions vs Collingwood, 27 possessions vs the Bulldogs, 26 possessions vs Port Adelaide and 29 possessions and a goal vs Essendon.

I can't forget Andrew Wills nicking off to Fremantle. He became a cult figure over there for a while.

You can add Adrian Hickmott too he became a goodie at Carlton.

Darren Steele and Tim Hargreaves were massive gets.

Brent Grgic was definitely the most insipid footballer I've ever seen play for Geelong; he was actually ok at Melbourne but I absolutely assumed he must be into the cough medicine when he was in the hoops, just looked away with the fairies. o_O

Yeah I remember being somewhat excited about getting Darren Steele, but as far as red heads go was maybe a poor mans Steven Stretch.

Willsy did kick that epic goal in the 94 GF in the first qtr running around Worsfold. Was right in front of me! Was one very hungry player anywhere near the big sticks.

Steve O'Reilly was another one who got away. He was a pretty solid full back from what I can remember. Did a lot of good at Carlton too. :D

Fred you might also remember Phil Stevens going to St Kilda. He taught at my primary school for a short time.

Yes, I do remember that, he was a very promising young player initially, but never went on with it.
Was he the one who had the chronic cramping problem?
Or was that Mick Woolnough?

Mansfield? An out that hurt?????

That was arguably the greatest trade we ever did (and initiated). Got rid of a player who was just on the wane and who would never get anywhere near the heights he got with us, but still had trade value and in exchange got a club legend who has contributed to this day.

I'm not sure. I think he was a bit of a 'pin up' type, was a favourite of my mums at least :) She made me get him to sign a '68 or '69 finals Record many years later.
