Lol remember when AI and technology was due to replace all sorts of menial labour jobs? Now it feels that's the thing it's least likely to replace.

Mt Everest:

Cost of climbing it: $30k to $160k
Odds you make the summit: about 65%
Odds you die: 1%
99% chance of survival, without summit. I like those odds.

And so does Beck

What's a nose and fingers anyway.

Captain Edward John Smith, the captain of the Titanic when the ship sank on its first and only voyage in April 1912, was 62 years old at the time of the disaster in which he subsequently died. Smith married for the first time in 1887 at age 37, did not become a father for 11 years after at age 48 and had only one child, a daughter named Helen. This was quite unusual for the time considering people in those days tended to marry and start their families younger, and usually had more kids, only children were rare.

So what became of Captain Smith's only child, daughter Helen Melville-Smith? In life there are some people who are plagued by ill fortune and tragedy, and then there's Helen Melville-Smith.

Somewhat auspiciously, Helen Smith was born on 2 April 1898, exactly 14 years before the Titanic took to sea for the first time for her trials in Belfast on 2 April 1912. Over a week later on the overcast morning of Wednesday 10th April 1912, when her father bade her and her mother goodbye and left their Southampton home to go and command the largest, grandest and safest ocean liner in the world on its maiden voyage, young Helen had no idea that neither he nor the ship would ever return, and that in five days' time her mother would be a widow and herself fatherless after the worst ever disaster at sea (at the time), in which more than 1500 other people died along with Captain Smith.

In the early 1920s, Helen married a stockbroker and in 1923 they had a twin son and daughter. But in 1930 Helen would herself be left widowed with young children after her husband died in a bizarre accident while cleaning a shotgun, unaware that the weapon was loaded until he fatally shot himself in the stomach.

Then in 1932, 20 years after the Titanic sank, Helen's elderly mother, the widow of the late Captain Smith was hit by a taxi in London and died of her injuries. In 1944, Helen Smith's son Simon was killed in action at age 21 while serving as an airman with the RAF in World War II, and his twin sister Priscilla died of polio two years later aged 23.

Helen Melville-Smith herself died at age 75 in 1973.

Continues to dominate the thread
You just know this is her mantlepiece

When English comedian Frankie Howerd died at age 75 in April 1992, his colleagues and friends from the entertainment industry paid tribute to him, but strangely nothing was heard from one of his closest friends, fellow comedian and actor Benny Hill.

What nobody knew at the time was that Benny Hill was already dead himself. At age 68, Hill had become increasingly reclusive and his health on a downward spiral since the cancellation of 'The Benny Hill Show' in 1989. By 1992 Hill's parents, brother and sisters had died, Hill had never married, had no children and largely kept to himself, so when the comedian died of heart failure at his home, his body was not discovered for some days.

The Jones Act is a US Act which requires that any cargo traveling by sea between two U.S. ports must sail on an American-owned ship, built in the United States and with a majority crew of U.S. citizens.

It has cost the US economy billions and is a significant contributor to land based traffic and pollution.

Is that act the same with cruise ships?

I think there's only one cruise ship that even meets those criteria - Spirit of America. Solely cruises the Hawai'ian islands.

My understanding is dedicated cargo vessels only and it extends to inland waterways as well.

So Benny would be 98? One for the things that make me feel old thread.

American singer April Stevens, who had a number of hit songs in the early 1960s as part of a duo with her younger brother Nino Tempo, was born in April (29th April 1929) and died in April (17th April 2023) aged 93.

I wonder if there have been any famous women named January, May or June who like the late singer were also born and died in the respective months of their names? Or people with names that are variations of July (Julian, Julius, Julie, Julia, Juliet) or August (Augustine, Augustus, Augusta) who were born and died in July and August respectively?

To date, I've never heard of anyone having the given names February, March, September, October, November or December or variations, so apologies if there are any.
