The two most recent dowager Queen Consorts of England both had children die before them.

Queen Mary, the wife of King George V saw her sickly youngest son die as a teenager in 1919 (not so unusual back then), lost a second son to a plane crash in 1942 and was still living at the time her second eldest son King George VI died early in 1952. She lived long enough to see her granddaughter Elizabeth become Queen of England but did not live long enough to see her coronation, as Mary died in March 1953 with Elizabeth's coronation in June of that year.

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother lived to the remarkable age of 101, dying in March 2002, however her younger daughter Margaret died at age 72 six weeks prior to her. Queen Elizabeth II outlived her younger sibling by more than 20 years.

Not sure if posted but this came up in a quiz

Wilmer McLean (May 3, 1814 – June 5, 1882) was an American wholesale grocer from Virginia. His house, near Manassas, Virginia, was involved in the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861. After the battle, he moved to Appomattox, Virginia, to escape the war, thinking that it would be safe. Instead, in 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant in McLean's house in Appomattox. His houses were, therefore, involved in one of the first and one of the last encounters of the American Civil War.
