A police officer has been shot dead while the alleged shooter and another officer have sustained gunshot wounds in an incident on a rural South Australian property overnight.

SA Police attended the property at Senior, near Bordertown, about 11:20pm on Thursday to investigate an earlier disturbance. Police said the officers were "confronted by an armed suspect" on the property in the state's south-east, close to the Victorian border.

Police said a shooting occurred and three people — including two officers — were shot by a person who also sustained serious life-threatening injuries. "One of the responding police officers sustained fatal gunshot wounds and despite the efforts of his colleagues and paramedics sadly died at the scene," police said. "The alleged suspect was also shot by police and sustained serious life-threatening injuries." Police said he was treated at the scene and has been flown to Adelaide where he remains under police guard.

"A second police officer received non-life threatening gunshot wounds and has been transported to Adelaide for treatment," police said. A third officer who was at the scene and who was able to render assistance was not physically injured, police said.

Major Crime detectives are heading to the property, as well as members of the Forensic Response and Internal Investigation sections.

There doesn't seem to be much press about Stimson's background or who he was living with on the property, who made contact with the police to report an animal had been shot.

The three officers attended the Senior Rd property on what was a “perfectly routine day in the job” after receiving reports that an animal had been harmed by a firearm.

The 26-year-old occupant, described as being known in the community but from a “neighbouring state”, allegedly opened fire at police when confronted.
