None of them should have been anything wtf were we thinking lets be edgy bold new and exciting I mean **** if you could wind back the clock I doubt anyone would want these designs let alone the Power nick... farking 90's man

On a certain level I agree with you but there were political issues we needed to work with. All eyes were on us at the time and there was no way we would have been allowed to slide something through that was too close to the PBs.

In a way, the journey we’ve been on in regards to guernsey design has been the most advantageous for (potentially) ending up with the PBs as one of our official strips.

If we’d gone hard for Pordalaide Pirates with black and silver, as an example, we would have had the same issues with the “not the same club” but less of an opportunity to mesh the two brands together as we’ve done since OneClub.

Besides all this, that left side guernsey was vastly under utilised in our early afl period. It’s a good design and distinct from anything else in the comp. it was also very well received when we revived it in the last year or so.

The black and white was never going to be worn but Collingwood and North Melbourne have both always worn vertical stripes with no clash problems so why could we not wear the prison bars with a small tweak away from the black and white. Some of our jumpers were predominantly black, the 1914 jumper had very thin white bars that could in no way clash with any other.

Here are the 1977 and 1965 teams compared to the Collingwood strip. There is no similarity and even if the black and white was a stumbling block we should have been able to retain the original pattern.

The one on the right was designed by twin sisters and if I've done my maths right they were 11. They didn't know the colours so it was black, white and silver/grey. There was some competition run thru the media. Think they won it. Not sure if it was endorsed by the club. Was on the NSW supporters committee with them for 2 or 3 years. Not sure why we used it as the Ansett Cup jumper but happy never wore it in a main game.

The lightning bolt tripanel was used as an away guernsey in 2003. This is Round 9 2003, away against Essendon.

This was right in the middle of the period where the great man used to viciously brutalise Essendon every single time to the point where it probably wasn't suitable to take children to a Ports v Essendon game. On this occasion he had 23 touches, 10 marks and kicked a lazy 7 at the dome.

God I can't wait for my 2 week old to start talking so I can tell her all about Warren Tredrea. The club really, really needs to release a career doco DVD.

The other two are BS in my opinion. Never really liked them and never will. Classic 90's short term trend thinking. To replace such an iconic jumper with these two was very disappointing.
We actually wore that Guernsey in a prelim final v Collingwood... I drank most of my memory from that game away that night...

Random A-league club runs out to NTAU. lol. Apparently they’ve been doing it since 2012
Try 2007. The Jets use it as their walk on song - saw Graham Arnold sitting in his sideline chair signing it a couple years ago dispite being the oppo coach. They also sing part of it at the 90th minute emphasising the we all have wings line.

Warren Tredrea had 23 touches, 10 marks and kicked a lazy 7 at the dome, in black socks.

Imagine if they were teal.

I've never understood the disproportional love for the original away guernsey, I like it a lot but I also like the other two launch guernseys. To me only the pre-season is the closest to a traditional design. The away is just as 90s graphic design think tank as the SBS. Can anyone explain to me why it is viewed differently?

Would it ever be possible to have had PB's with teal replacing the white? I know what I'm saying is virtually sacrelige and with BiB, I don't expect it now, but I've seen a mock design of it and it wasn't bad.

More black, less teal = more ports

The SBS is too busy and hard to replicate - see the isc botch job in 2014

The away guernsey has strong straight lines and is more simple

I'm surprised we didn't enter the league with something like that in 97.

I think a huge part of why it's considered sacrilege to mess with it now is due to our mid 2000s identity crisis. I think it would have been better received if we did it in 1997, definitely more palatable than the first 3 guernseys.

The club went full modern 90s with the teal and the unusual designs, when they probably only needed to do one or the other. Teal was modern enough and still would have looked modern with a more traditional footy design, which is where we eventually got to 14 years later.

This was around the time when I first began to really notice football as a nine or ten year old and I would always have fantasies about us running out in this jumper again in the following years wondering why we didn't wear it anymore. Thought it was so cool. For those that don't know, that bloke in the picture is Warren Tredrea, he was an absolute beast centre half forward for us back in the day, arguably the best in the competition at one point too. All hail the king

Oh, and I should also have mentioned the other bloke who's pumping his fists above his head is Dean Brogan, who also won an NBA championship to go with his 2004 AFL premiership ring

NBL, right?
