Eddie has turned the footy show into a Victorian Footy Show...

It comes down to ratings, and ultimately the “boys club” over there in Melbourne.
Ratings wise the biggest market for them is Victoria.
There is little exposure of non Victorian based players over there, so why would they get say, Kane Cornes to be part of the shows panel?
The average viewer over there wouldn’t know who he was.

Am probably in the minority on this, but no concern at holding the Grand Final at the MCG. It's the best ground for it by a long way. Whilst love the new Perth Stadium and Adelaide Oval is awesome, the capacities just don't stack up.

Having said that 2057 is a very long time away and would have thought the AFL would have at least liked to have that carrot to dangle in front of state governments when the next round of ground upgrades is required.

2057 is so far away, its crazy to lock in something until then.

I really think the best option, which is at least vaguely plausible, would've been a 1-in-melbourne, 1-interstate, repeat sequence. So it would go MCG - Perth Stadium - MCG - Adelaide Oval - MCG - Gabba - MCG - SCG. Keeps the large venue in action but doesn't monopolise it.
The articles strongly suggest that the extensions was signed to secure fundimg for Vic based AFLW venues from the government.

Those arguing on the basis of ground capacity please stop.

Fair enough with GF at MCG, but now they have to ensure each club gets at least 3 games at the MCG each year.

No ifs or buts.
Wont happen but perhaps non vic clubs that make the 8 should get three or four the following year, the GF was there until 2037 anyway I'm not gonna lose sleep over it.
For me it's the best venue for the GF and the last few years are just the way the cookie crumbled, non vic clubs will start winning GF's there again there's nothing more certain.

I have no problems with the GF at the ’G’ but the rest is interesting. Agree with some comments about tourism but I’d say behind closed doors the big mighty VFL was losing its identity as the ‘best’ league in the land ideology (even though its a national comp now) - they still want to act like kings of the castle, and with AO and the new Perth stadium they need probably feel a little insecure about themselves.

The way Eddie was waffling last night quite proudly about Vic this and Vic that says he really couldn’t give a stuff about anyone else. The we had to listen to the next half hour about Collingwood and Essendon respectively, that was clearly an agenda to promote 2 big Vic clubs, no different to how Murdoch papers influence an agenda.

All good but perhaps they should reduce the number of games Vic teams get on there and increase the number of games non Vic teams get.

Is to be expected this whole MCG GF thing.

Thing is, if you are the best team in the comp for a season then winning away games has to happen.

If a non-Vic team makes the grand final then you bet they have made it on more merit than one that has played 14-15 games at their home ground.

Still comes down to Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere

Brisbane won 3 grand finals in a row against Melbourne teams, Essendon and Collingwood (twice).

Har har..meanwhile the Shouter apparently has a scoop that Sloaney is leaving
And some random I was talking to on the train this morning said the Crows are certainties for this year's flag. Equally relevant. :)

Feasting on the fresh corpse of Fitzroy and washing it down with an ice-cold COLA helped but.
True, but they still had to play "away" Grand Finals.

Even the Crows won two in a row against Melbourne teams despite only making it to the GF on the back of a dodgy finals system.

The whole give the MCG another 20 years of guranteed grand finals is bullshit. We are effectively back to 1992 and giving them the next 40 years locked up. It means the opportunity of doing a Super Bowl sharing around becomes non existent as you have a 60+ year history of GF's in the national comp come 2057. So the incentive to upgrade grounds to 70-80k to host a GF every 5 years isn't there for another 20 years.

And it's all because of Docklands and the AFL trying to secure that. AFL paid $200m in November 2016 took out a loan for that and another loan for $80m for working capital when if they waited to 31 st December 2025 they got it for just $30.

This is a way for the AFL to get $300m+ out of the Vic government to do up Docklands because having to finance a $280m loan repayment in 7 years, as the AFL said they could pay off the loan 2 years quicker than if they waited until end of 2025, means there is no extra monies for tenant clubs compared to what the private owners needed to pull out the ground, unless the AFL stick in an artificial subsidy to the tenant clubs. Apparently the AFL has negotiated upgrade monies for the MCG. No doubt it's private boxes and the AFL Members reserve area.

So the AFL runs to the Vic government with the begging bowl and the trade off is another 20 years GF as other states have started to get their shit together and there is a small chance that a GF might not be played at MCG post 2037.

What do the non Vic clubs get? An orgasmic 40 minutes per game they play there, to train there and a gurantee that non Vic clubs get to play 2 games a year at the MCG. At least the AFL is going to pay for Charter flights for non Vic clubs after a MCG prelim final and for the GF for their flight to Melbourne at their preferred time not the airlines.

Once again just like the 1992 MCG deal and 1999 Docklands deal negotiated by Graeme Samuel, great deal for the AFL, shit deal for its constituent clubs.

Whatever. This won't be a national competition while the GF is played at the MCG every season. It's the way it is. Now let's move on and keep enjoying the bone the vfl threw at us.
