Additionally, in that year's Qualifying Final against Geelong Tredrea virtually sacrificed himself to keep Scarlett out of the way, which did the trick because we won by 40+ points.

I miss Warren :(
Don't worry: Warren might have struggled to keep a spot in our current forward line. TIC

bomber has more problems than just the drugs scandal, I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't involved in football next year let alone head coach at a club. he's great value in the media and his record speaks for itself but as a main man in the afl industry i think it may have got to him eventually.

He hasn't paid the fine yet and he may lose his AFL accreditation if he doesn't.

Hird's argument is interesting because he is arguing that ASADA had no power to compel players to respond. The AFL did and used those powers to obtain evidence for ASADA which is supposed to be an independent body. Since the original investigation ASADA has been granted the power to compel. The argument is that ASADA acted illegally by coercing another body to get information which it then used.

.

Not really. Hird's lawyers are saying that ASADA shouldnt have been in the room when the AFL were asking the questions of the players. Hird's lawyers have no issue with ASADA asking the AFL to ask the questions for them, just as long as they arent in the same room. Well along those lines.

Its a lot of doublespeak and it's a far cry from Hird pleading through the media that he couldnt wait for the truth to get out.

As long as its his truth of course.

Quinten Lynch kicked 60-odd that year.

And Hansen was more than serviceable playing mostly as a lead up. And was Lynch the primary beneficiary of being spoon fed by an outstanding midfield? Same can be said for Cam Mooney with Geelong's midfield.

Ashley Hansen 2006. You can win with average tall forwards and an absolute gun midfield.
But 2005 the go to man for WCE was finals fabulous five foot phil matera and in 2006 he was replaced with Quinten Lynch who kicked 65 goals for the year. Once again neither Lynch or Hansen were dominate KPFs but provided better structure and played important roles in winning a flag.

Is there any news on Hird's appeal yet? Cannot be stuffed wading through the crap on the ASADA Drugs thread.

Not a fan of Hird but I hope he wins. If he does the ASADA investigation is ruled unlawful then ASADA have to piss off and find something else to pursue. As there is no interest like self interest this will also be good for us because the show cause notices issued by ASADA will be non enforceable and Paddy and Gus will have no case to answer.

Could go either way but I will bet the establishment wins and the appeal is dismissed. It would be too embarrassing for ASADA and the Federal Government if an investigation into use of banned substances were derailed. Australia from John Coates on the IOC, who started this anti drugs ball rolling, through successive Federal Governments have made a big deal about getting drugs out of sport. If Australian law is seen to derail an investigation into alleged drug code violations it would make Australia's position on the world stage a tad hypocritical not to mention embarrassing for Mr Coates and the Minister.

I just want Hird to get what he deserves.

Even if he wins, it doesn't mean that the case against Monfries and Ryder is over. If anything, it just prolongs this sorry saga for another 12 months.

That may be how ASADA did it but they had no power to ask questions at the time and were supposed to have acted 'independently'. Peter Hanks has an issue with the AFL acting with ASADA. This was reported by Adam Cooper and Jon Pierek in the Melbourne Age.

On that basis clearly Hird and his lawyers believe that the AFL should not have colluded with ASADA. It is also interesting that one of the Justices has questioned the legality of a joint probe. This does not mean that it will be found to be illegal but it is in question. On the other side of the issue Hird and the players interviewed were told that ASADA would be present when the AFL asked questions yet they did not object at the time. It is hard to see how Hird can now object to the fact that ASADA were in the room.

You are right about Hird and the truth coming out Phhht. Thus far there are no new facts only debate as to whether the correct procedure was followed. As I say I carry no torch for Hird and my interest is unashamedly self interest. If we didn't have two players under threat of sanction I would probably show little interest.

It probably does because Hird also wants the show cause notices quashed. As I read it any evidence ASADA have was gleaned from questions asked by the AFL which is the main point of contention. If that evidence is ruled to have been obtained outside of ASADA's terms of reference then it is unlikely to hold up. I am not sure if the International Court for Arbitration in Sport would be bound by an Australian Court ruling but I assume it would. If this is the case then any evidence tendered by ASADA or WADA before the ICFAS would be inadmissible. I am not a lawyer so I have no idea of the implications.

Rendell run over by the PC brigade. His wink wink nudge nudge re Mitch Harvey is a seed to watch.
Watched him closely this year and Mason Shaw and its promising.
Have I got my roses coloured glasses on?
No. They are coming along nicely. If Shaw did not break his arm and miss half the season, he would have been pushing for AFL selection. Harvey is still 12 months away.

Just came across this scary article from 2012 (nb: We picked Ollie Wines with #7 a few weeks later)

Trust These Boys To Deliver In Draft

Former AFL stars Andrew McLeod and Chris Johnson say clubs won't regret drafting WA's elite Aboriginal players at next week's national draft despite them having question marks over different aspects of their lives.

Dayle Garlett, Josh Simpson and Shannon Taylor were selected in the elite AFL Academy and have shown outstanding potential as teenagers.

Simpson is almost certain to be the State's first draftee. He is spending time in Yalgoo, 200km east of Geraldton, in the build-up to the draft. The wingman has been linked to Port Adelaide at pick seven, GWS at 12 and Gold Coast at 13.

The last thing Hird wants is for the truth to get out.

In the article above Peter Hanks outlines the Hird case.

An interesting point: because the AFL was asking the questions the players had a contractual obligation to answer. Even if ASADA had the power to ask at the time, the players could have refused to answer.

And all of the players, the club, Hird and the other actors had legal representation with them. That suggests that any participation in the process and willingness to answer questions was done fully appraised of the circumstances and ASADA and the AFL's ability to conduct the investigation as they have.

Of course, the appeal could go either way. There is a real ambiguity in the legislation as it stood at the time. However, you shouldn't read too much into just one side's submissions or the comments one or more of the judges made during the hearing.

In relation to the judges, sometimes they will ask questions pointing out weaknesses in one side's case. In other circumstances, they will probe the most into the case to which they are favouring to enable that party to make sure its case is watertight. The thing is, only the judge knows why they are asking them. That's particularly unsettling when you are one of the parties.

Luke Beveridge looks to be the next coach of the Bulldogs. Announcement to come at 1.30. Would have thought Bomber Thompson would have been the way to go for them, I've got a lot of respect for both him as a person and his ability as a coach.

did i just read someone say they hope hird wins......

woah, strewth.

did they inject their players - yes
did they use so called 'poor governance' to hide what they were actually giving the players - yes (they know exactly what they gave them)
have they been searching for meaningless loopholes to delay the obvious outcome - yes

case closed your honour, forget all the meaningless trivial nonsense thats surrounding this mess of a case / coach / club. throw the book at them / him, no sympathy.
