Had a little smile when reading the SM's articles this morning. Poulos has the hype thing down pat. Meanwhile, Burgess is measured and not over-the-top.
And then there's the mention of Phil Walsh and Poulos' three-year plan.

As Koch said yesterday 'we have developed worlds best practice - I am glad the crows want to be like us'

The best part about that is that it was lobbed as such an innocent throwaway dig and the poor guys were so genuinely offended. Telling.

Poulos would be lucky to be able to count to three.

The ole chip on the shoulder was there to hear!

Cornes 'did Walshy grow up in alberton?'

No but read the spin coming from west lakes graham - Walsh has taken Ken's coaching philosophies and Burgess's fitness program and spun it verbatim.

No doubt Walsh is a great tactician - but most of the rest he has garnered from Ken.

Our real concern of course is Hawthorn. Luke Hodge has been talking to the Age.

He had a bit to say about us.

After watching Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley unleash a successful attacking ploy late in last year's preliminary final against the Hawks, Hodge expects most clubs to devise more innovative tactics this season. Just as the Hawks thought they were in control, Hinkley had the likes of Chad Wingard line up at the back of the centre-square at bounce downs and, like an Olympic sprinter, simply dash through at full speed to collect a loose ball. It worked because the Power were able to get first hands to the ball.

"We have tried that at training," Hodge said. "What you have to realise is, and we have spoken about it a number of times afterwards, in a prelim, if you lose, it doesn't matter if you lose by five points or 50 points. You are going to try things.

"So, I think they were 30 points down with 10 minutes to go, you are going to try things because there is no next week if you are content to sit there.

"They put a few guys on the back of the square, Wingard. We identified they were doing that. We probably should have put someone around there a bit quicker but everything fell their way. The ball came out and there were four of us around the ball, and the ball would pop out to them. Once Port get a run on, they are a quality side.

We can joke all we like about that Peter Welsh but Clarkson is a real gun of a coach, with great players at his disposal. They'll be working their arses off to counteract our run and carry. James Frawley gives them extra options in their defense. I think they want to keep him down back with Brian Lake and the idea is for them to use Gibson rather like we use Westhoff.

Winning the whole thing in 2015 is going to be damn tough, and most of that toughness centres around bloody Hawthorn. Freo won't be easy and Sydney will pose problems but the real headache is Hawthorn. I'll be watching 2 games most every week- us and whoever is playing Hawthorn. And the rest of the league is making up the numbers, IMHO.

That's great, lets see if they have the ability to go head to head. At the end of the day, I would much prefer to beat a full firing Crows team then a limping excuse of a team and club.

As for Walsh, lets wait and see :) A guy by the name of Allan Richardson possibly tried the same at St Kilda, so far that isn't working to well for him :)

Will be even sweeter if we can mange to win :) I am looking forward to this season like most of us but lets see if Hawthorn can keep on keeping on! Bring it on!!! :D

"Once Port get a run on, they are a quality side."

That shows how far we have to go. The consensus is that we aren't quality until we get a bit of momentum - that we are flying by the seat of our pants. Expect sides to really turn the screws on us this year, to arrest any chance at getting back to back goals.

A true quality side wouldn't have missed those goals in the first quarter. That's what makes the difference between us and Hawthorn - taking your chances.

Any team that doesn't get a run on isn't a very good team, Hodge knows full well how good his team is at controlling the momentum and keeping it going their way. This year is all about not getting the momentum and hanging onto it, it'll be about forcing the momentum to go our way and controlling it for entire matches.

Why is everyone saying Sydney is out of it?

I can't speak for 'everyone', but here's why I am saying Sydney is out of it.

They got smashed in the GF. When that happens, clubs generally don't bounce back quickly. I think it's because on GF day, every weakness of their gameplan was exposed, and basically Hawthorn gave clubs like Port and Freo the 'how to' guide of how to beat Sydney. Ken Hinkley and Ross Lyon won't need to be told twice.

Also, Nick Malceski left for the Gold Coast. That's massive. Imagine what it would mean for us if Jackson Trengove decided to take the cash at an expansion club. The 'bloods culture' may not be dead, but it's not what it once was, that's for sure.

They'll beat up on weaker teams, and Buddy is still Buddy.. but against the real contenders? I don't think they can rejig their game in time.

Edit: Also, plenty of smarter minds then mine think Sydney are a huge threat. Ask Macca19 , he rates the Swans far higher then I me. So it's not 'everone'

meanwhile.... over at Port Lite...

(you've got to laugh)

New Adelaide coach Phil Walsh has embraced having Buccheit on board and even wants to expand his role as he instils his “elite standards’’ ethos into the club.

This season Walsh has demanded they be able to repeatedly run at high intensity.

“Every new coach brings in new ideas,’’ Poulos said.

“We’ve just started a three-year plan with Walshy and it’s going to be a long journey with the group.

I think I recall some sort of insane statistic about us last year that we had a very high number of 6+ goal momentum swings our way, and that we were also very hard to score multiple goals against in a row.

He is the reason I'm so bullish about Ken, they both coached premierships at lower levels. They both were senior assistants at AFL premiership winning teams (Alright Clarko left one week before the Port premiership but it still counts), both made incremental improvements on their first and second years, yes Ken's been more stunning but he probably had more to work with even though Clarko was able to recruit Buddy, Roughead and Lewis within 5 mins being there.

Also another thing I noticed about the article is Hodge said Port and Geelong play the most attractive football and Steve Johnson (and Mackie) credit Hinkley there.

Its possible they will drop as they have a number of old players, but I think with Buddy and Tippett up forward, a midfield group at its peak and their ability to plug and play defenders they'll still be up there this year. With guys like Mitchell, Brandon Jack, Heeney, Zac Jones coming through they'll have enough to replenish their stocks. If they have some injuries, particularly to their defenders they could be in trouble.

They'll want one last hurrah with Goodes.

Has anyone ever established why some crows fans call us "the tealsters" like its some sort of insult?
Maybe that dude who is obsessed with teal could answer this.

I suspect people know that a shit load of our fans rejected the John James make teal our dominate colour. I dont like teal but Im not offended by being called a tealster.

I like teal and you can call me a tealster if you want.Call me a campaigner if you want but I don't care about that either.

Geoffa started it. It's his way of fooling himself into believing his own deluded, confused logic that we're not the "real Port" and that he did indeed back the right horse. Of course, he's fooling no one.

The harder he tries, the more you know it burns. He's dying inside.
