The guy is one of the most underrated players in the last 25 years.

I agree but id take Brown over him in a heartbeat.

he was a fearsome competitor who crashed and bashed in the toughest position in football, he we great on the lead and a super kick.

That was 04, in 03 it was 27 goals to Lynchs 78. By '04 he was the no 1 forward, in '03 hardly.

Carey was 25.5 years, Tredders was 25.75 years, Hall was 28.5 years, Pavlich 31.75 years, Riewoldt 26.9 years when these guys either held their first premiership cup or made their first GF. Brown was 20.9 years old when he won his first flag and in 2003 when he won his 3rd at 22.9 years he was the number 1 forward at the Lions. The big key in all of these comparisons in premiership years or GF years is look at the mid field and how good it was and for how long both before and after those GFs.

He wasn't the number 1 Lions forward in 2003. Lynch was way, way ahead and Bradshaw kicked more goals than Brown, albeit in a few more games.

In 2003 and 2004 he was 4th in the Lions goalkicking. He wasn't the leading man by any stretch. Brown was a part of those flags, but he was the 3rd tall up forward. Using them to justify his hype is ridiculous. He didn't even finish top 2 in the Lions goalkicking until 2006.

I'm happy to concede that Brown wasn't a poor captain despite his team's fortunes, but people can't have it both ways.

Either the team is separate to the individual, in which case you can discount his 3 flags when judging him as a player because he wasn't important to them, or team success is really important, in which case he was wildly successful early in his career but woefully unsuccessful as a leader and captain.

My mistake, but surely that hurts your point rather than helping it. I know that CHF's do more than just kick goals, but I don't care how much extra work around the ground he does, claiming that a guy who kicked 27 goals was the #1 forward over a guy who kicked 78 goals is ridiculous.

Three flags at CHF by the time you are 22 is a fair achievement, remembering that the best players played in that spot including your own great in Tredrea. Obviously his stats are well known, but much of his great work was done off the ball, just continuos gut running, leading and blocking. In 2002 we were just going, Brown had missed a patch with suspension and we were generally spluttering along. We played the Hawks at the G and they were on and we weren't. The ball went into our forward line, Brown went back with the flight and took "The Mark" and in my eyes the mark of the century. 17 other players immediately sprinted to him. I was with two fervent Hawk supporters and caught up in the emotion commented that we would win the Flag on the back of that effort. Browny went back and slotted the goal from just inside 50. Years later I chatted with your now Assistant Coach - he thought the same thing at the same time. If Brown played for a Vic team, he would be a media colossus, that he is as feted as he is playing for an interstate based team just underlines what the footy public think of him. Voss was the greatest competitor that I've seen play, Brown comes a close second.

I meant the contact was late, not the actual timing of the incident in the span of the match.

I think the issue in this board is not so much the way people remember Brown but has more to do with the disrespect shown to Tredrea.
And I did use/choose the right word.

I'll admit, Brown slotted pretty nicely into that premiership team. He was a contributor to one of the great teams of all time, but a contributor to that premiership team in the same way Quintin Lynch was at WC or Tom Hawkins was at Geelong. But I thought he never was the X-factor of that Lions team. The team was strong at every line and every position.

I wasn't there for that mark he took. But can one mark really motivate or inspire a team to a win a flag mid-season?

I thought he was idolised by the media in Victoria. He was made captain of the Legends game back in 08. The Footy Show panelists blushed and got giddy every time he appeared on the show, I thought he got looked after just fine over there.

No doubt he's a champion. I just think the severe over rating of Brown compared to Tredrea gets up our noses.

Even ignoring Tredrea, Brown being rated as the 5th best player by anyone over the past 25 years, ahead of the likes of Riewoldt and Pavlich is an insult to football.

Great player. The most overrated player of this generation. 2 AA guernseys and he'll probably have a case made for him to be a legend in the HOF one day. It sickens me.

He's not a "champion". Ablett's a champion. Carey's a champion. Brown's in the "very good player" category, but champion? No way. You need more than 2 AA gongs to be considered a champion.

Tredrea was the standout, unopposed, for 5 years running, before injury.

No other KPF can lay claim to that since, and the only other one in the modern era that can compete with that at CHF is Carey.
