I don’t care about his personal drug issues but it’s just laughable that there was never any serious discussion or investigation about potential drug cheating during his tenure at Geelong in light of them. Then there’s the obvious Dank/Weapon aspect of course which was only briefly mentioned at the start of the Essendon saga with no follow up. World’s biggest broom meet world’s biggest rug.

They did investigate. Well, the AFL asked Geelong to investigate themselves and they came back with "yep, we're all good."
Going back to the 4 Corners report that was the first time the supplement saga was broached publicly, they mentioned that there were two other teams on similar programs being investigated by the AFP. No other teams have ever been named.

It's not even a conspiracy to suggest that something untoward was going on at Geelong at that time.
It's very likely they were the first to play close to the line with supplements, at the very least.
AFL having to rescind 3 premiership cups from one of its darlings would have been a disaster for the heartland and the boys club, hence the need for the broom. We were just acceptable collateral damage.
(As an unrelated aside, this was all going down around the same time Ron Barassi was calling for an investigation into why Victorian teams weren't winning flags and what can be done about it. Just a coincidence, I'm sure.)
IMO, it's the biggest cover up in professional sport.

There’s a chapter in The Boys Club by Michael Warner that goes into a bit of detail about bits of this. It’s well worth a read. It’s staggering that it never was addressed in more detail.

what I found strange at the time was the boys club media guffawing and rib-nudging over "Male Pattern Baldness", like trying to tell us "nothing to see here, just this random hair loss thing that we'll go on about relentlessly to explain one clubs bald players then never go on about it again"... I was a teenager asking my old man at the time "what IS male pattern baldness?"

Technology will be the buzz word in 2024 and 2025 in the AFL.
Laura Kane on getting the job as head of footy department last Monday - full title, Executive General Manager of Football - said her aims were;
Kane listed higher scoring and quicker ball movement in the AFLW competition among her priorities and promised to invest in technology across both competitions to “understand more about our game” and what can be automated when the game is happening in real time using ball-tracking technology.
Last Wednesday night, McGuire revealed the following on Footy Classified, and he is involved in progressing this via his Jam TV company. To be fair, McGuire has been banging on about technology and the footy in particular, for years - red balls aren't kicked in, yellow balls are too slippery with whatever they use to coat the ball yellow, advertising logo printed on ball sometimes affects feel of the ball etc. He says David Hill is involved in development and implementation of this technology.
David Hill being involved, gives me a lot of confidence they might finally get this right. Hill was the executive producer of World Series Cricket then all of 9's big sports coverage, went to work for Murdoch when he set up SKY satellite service in UK and then when 2 satellite companies losing big $$ merger happened, new company was BSKYB and they got the rights for the first season of the EPL in 1992/93 after putting in a huge bid offer, he became the executive producer of their soccer coverage. Murdoch then moved him to LA when Fox Sports in US won the NFL rights for the first time in 1994, when there was a great fear the then small Fox network might **** up the NFC package they had outbid others for. David Hill has lead innovations wherever he has gone, that became industry standards world wide. He left Fox in 2015 to start up his own production company that concentrates on live events.

Dwayne Russell spoke to an AI technology expert Steve Sammartino at the start of August and what general as well as AI technology could be introduced to the sports and with a focus on AFL, and how soon. Steve reckons in the future, clubs will have a specialist AI coach. It will be used in game, in recruiting etc. Might be an AI arms race soon. The soft cap limit might not be able to stop it, especially if clubs partner up with AI technology companies and the expenditure sits off the clubs' books. Its a bloody interesting interview.

Nah not staggering at all.
Essendon was caught by an Australian Crime Commission sting on bikees and their importing and selling of a combo of illicit drugs and PEDs and Dank had strong connections to some of them. They called in ASADA first to do a full report on the sports PED situation, and then the AFL and NRL as a shot across the bows, when they could have just gone public with their report and no warning and blasted both organisations for doing nothing about this.
Geelong, there is no hard evidence collected by the ACC, so the AFL are off the hook. Just some circumstantial evidence.
Its how doping works, its covert and sporting organisations don't really want to know about it, neither do sports fans. Its the I'm a sausage eater, not a sausage make aspect to it. Don't want to think about the yukkie pooh stuff of killing an animal and gutting it, to make a sausage.
Look at the Lance Armstrong case. There was some hard evidence and a lot of circumstantial evidence. How could a guy who almost died of cancer generate a higher wattage output than people who were caught in the Festina drugs scandal 2 years earlier. The positive sample testing several years later after EPO tests had been developed. The UCI turned a blind eye. ASO organisers of Tour De France didn't have the testing facilities outside the 3 weeks of their event so they were dependent on the sporting organisation doing the right thing. Armstrong failed a test, it was covered up that he hadn't put in a medical use exemption certificate, so it was backdated and given the all ok.
Money was to be made for everyone involved in Armstrong being successful. It was a fairytale story. It produced a huge new audience in the USA, and new multinational companies getting involved in sponsorship, and everyone wants a cancer survivor to succeed. There were massive television ratings to be had for the broadcasters.
The only reason Armstrong was exposed, was a) because of his stupidity to return to the sport, and b) because you had a couple of strong willed civil servants, ex IRS special agent Jeff Novitzky who started off investigating BALCO for tax purposes and it all branched off to PEDs, and USADA CEO Travis Tygart, who were independent of the individuals and the sport. And a courageous journalist in David Walsh, who kept the story bubbling along when nearly everyone else was turning a blind eye.
None of that happened in the AFL. They weren't going to dig and investigate one of their own. UCI didn't.

No more random 5 meter kicks being paid in the midfield, then down back 30m kicks around the goal line being called "not 15" because the umpire is trying to move the game on.
In all seriousness we must have the most different tastes ever. Those are two of the greatest TV shows of all time. Neither in the top 10 but certainly both in the top 50.It was worse than Mash.

Yeah I have become really pissed off with the interpretation of how far 15m is over the last decade. Some kicks are going 8 to 10m and being called a mark many times in a game.
The other one is 50m penalties, they can be anywhere between 35m and 70m. Plus the umpires have no idea how Pythagoras formula works. They should just move players in a straight 50m line not on an angle towards goal if the penaly is awarded outside the 50m arcs. You don't need technology for that, but hopefully the microchips solve the problem.
You could solve that problem with 16 x 2 m lines drawn on the ground. If you start say, at the north west corner of the centre square you and heading southward and draw a 2m line, so you have 1m either side of the centre square wing line at 10m, 20m, 30m and 40m south of that NW corner and also have a 2m line 10m and 20m south of the centre square. You would also have those lines at 10m and 20m north of the centre square NW corner. You replicate that on the eastern side of the ground/centre square and the umpires are told you use these lines as markers and you move the player up in a straight line if the penalty is outside the 50m arcs.
That way you have 90m marked and the goal line to the first mark at either end, at any ground is less than 50m so the umpire(s) would have to be ****en hopeless if they still can't get within a metre or two of what is actually a 50m penalty.
