Assistant coaches are incredibly hard to judge from the outside and they are working within the vision of the head coach, I mean people saying Skipworth is the brains behind McRae the other day is absolutely mental.

I have it on very good authority that Alan Richardson was much more respected than Hinkley by most of the players while he was with us.

It was probably more due to the fact that Essendon were literally smashing every team up until that point. There percentage was around 160, and they went 24 and 1 for the season with that being their only loss.

It was a surprise but the doggies had a pretty good team back then. 1997-2000 finals every year.

I remember the game well because i was there. Chris Grant dominated.

They lost to second last, 1 win at the time, St Kilda. Didn't kick a goal in the first half and 1 in three quarters.

Their other loss was the previous round, by 72 points to 11th placed Sydney. Only 2 games they dropped all year and flogged by crap sides who finished 12th and 14th in a 16 team comp.

They were also famously cheating the salary cap. Who knows what shenanigans were going on in those 2 games

That was the example I was thinking of when I said its happened before in the AFL era, but not in the 18 team era.

I was at the SCG the Friday night the swans smashed Carlton - for some reason when the swans were a poor side and when they were really shit in the early thru to mid 90's, they matched up well against Carlton. Carlton in 1995 were 7-0 or 8-0 then played the swans who weren't far off the bottom and the next week St Kilda who were bottom and got thumped in both games.

Its why you don't panic if you are a premiership favourite and you get a shellacking during the season. Obviously you don't want it happening in August.

Fox Sports reported that Rd 9 2005 was the last time bottom beat the top side. Collingwood beat WCE at the MCG. In above example StK beat Carlton in Rd 9 1995. So Carlton were 7-0 then got 2 beltings, then won their next 16 games and the flag.
