I was intending on purchasing this bag from the 50's because i thought it was the collingwood magpies logo on it but the bag is from south australia and the seller is advertising it as a collingwood or port bag i cant find a collingwood logo ever being like that is this a port magpies logo on this gym bag?

The Collingwood logo always has the Magpie looking straight ahead or to the right as you see it, whereas the Port Adelaide Magpie is looking to the left as you see it. It's always been this way, so going on that the bag pictured is a Collingwood Magpie bag.

There is the chance it is just generic, altho' I do recall some SANFL bags like this and from memory both the Sturt & Norwood ones were unusual. I would contact the bloke at 'At the toss of the coin' which is on Unley Road at Malvern, he would know.

Certainly the membership badges/tie pins/cufflinks from the Club from about 63 onwards, have the magpie looking left or behind it. i don't recall too many before that time.

Could be an old Western Suburbs logo also.

2 examples of the Collingwood logo also not looking right as it does now

Muddying the water further, I reckon there is a bag like that in one of the display cabinets in the foyer of the Port Club.

Beleve it or not?
I had an identical bag like that when I went to school.
It was however the late 70's or early 80's and was obviously an unnoficial footy club item.
Whoever said it was from the 50's is telling porkies unless they were around for 30 years.

How is it that this mob are claiming to be 140 years old anyway?

so its def not a collingwood magpies bag?

My take is it could be either. Prior to "Officially Licensed Product" a lot of generic merchandise was produced catering for both clubs. Still happens today to a degree. I'd say that Collingwood scarves and Port Magpies scarves come out of the same factory. One gets a Collingwood logo sewn on, the other a Port Adelaide logo.

Unless it specifically says "Port Adelaide FC" somewhere, as soon as you ship it back to Victoria it will be deemed to be an old Collingwood bag anyway.

90% sure I can back this. I had a nice look around the club on jumper launch day and fondly took in some of the old stuff in that box, I remember the playing cap, fairly sure I remember a bag like that too.

Shared history. They are Port Adelaide, we are Port Adelaide. WE are both Port Adelaide. Time to unite or see one die. Which I know you, and all the others who blame them for the segregation and whatnot, will find hard to stomach.. who wants the Maggies dead?

I dare say no and not from the 50's either.
I also had a PAFC bag around that time too .It had the official Magpie symbol and was more white on the ends.

So you went to school in the 70s/80s but you had a bag like that in the 50s?

Took this photo below yesterday. The Port Adelaide Magpie bag is in a glass cabinet in the Port Club foyer.

Looks very similar apart from the writing but also somewhat older especially if it is the same age as the boots?
Blue Stars maybe?

I reckon that's a Port Adelaide one. The Collingwood one would have a bit of white on the chest. ;)

Slightly off topic but how much better is our Magpies logo than Collingwoods? Ours looks so much clearer and more detailed. Whoever drew ours was very talented. Such a timeless logo. Still looks as good as it did in 78. Just glorious!
