At this point I don't think there can be a winner. Whoever wins will be stuffed for Friday.

Chad with a bigger brain explosion than JFK following on from Ebo's mindless play on from the square.

Who gives a toss about the towel? You're 10 metres out, just pop it through!

Rubbish.

Strange match. Very dissapointing result with all those chances in the end.

Ebert really isnt becoming the player we are gonna look to under pressure

Jeez, I only just turned on and caught most of the extra time, but WTF did we have to do to get a free? Was it like that all night?

Disappointing result - but considering the conditions it would have been valuable experience for the young players.
With the conditions, I don't think that there will be much gained from trying to disect the game plan.

I though C Cones was very good in the last half - but that effort at goal was awful - why he just didn't go back, like Ebert should have and concentrate on only one thing is beyond me, particularly with his experience. Wasn't also happy with many Geelong players within about 3 metres when he kicked for goal.

Very happy with White, Thomson, Rodan, Gray, Pearce (late) and Cockshell.

Not happy with Ebert, Thurstans, Pettigrew and Logan

Hats off to Port Adelaide. Who says wet weather slogs are bad footy? Both sides put on one hell of a show and ran themselves into the ground, but in the end you just came up short. If we'd lost I would not have been overly updet because we would have been pipped by a brave and honourable opposition, but I think the better side did get home tonight.

Disappointing result but v happy with the 1st and 4th quarters. Showed guts to get back in it in the final term. However, we were pretty poor in between. C Cornes was massive in second half (bad miss in ET but thats life). Ebo has too many brain fades. SB, Pearce, Rodan were good...

Thurstans - he is better back there but not much better..

NAB cup - who cares really - good solid hit out for the lads but they will be absolutely buggered this week.

Any injuries?

Boak got a few possessions, how'd he look?

Difficult to assess in the conditions, but for the limited time he was on the ground he got a bit of the ball - so IMO OK. What was pleasing is that he looked at options up the ground before releasing by hand or foot.

I thought he went alright. Got a bit of the ball and seemed to know how to handle himself. But I reckon you made a bad decision in passing on Joel Selwood.

It's a big trap to assess new players too early - let's revisit how thay are going in 1-2 seasons.

Look to be different players to me.

If it had been the other way around you'd be raving about how good Boak is and how we shouldn't have taken Selwood.

I thought from tonight's cameo, Boak should be playing at least half a dozen games this year.

Pretty much agree with what you've said here. I found more positives than negatives from tonights game. Yes we made some basic fundamental skill errors/brain fades or whatever you want to call them but so did Geelong. The what if's include Cornes kick off 1 step which was smothered & Geelong ran it down & got a goal, Ebert playing on in the goal square etc.

Positives .... & a few quick observations
Cockshell ~ doesn't mind going for the big hanger, works hard to keep the ball in his area & more often than not keeps his feet in the contest. Hopefully he'll get another few games under his belt before the season starts.
White ~ worked very hard throughout the game with a few mistakes but given the trying conditions i thought that he was one of our better players tonight.
Gray ~ looked keen as mustard tonight & it'll be interesting to watch his progress over the season.

Just a quick thought on our midfield & what i would've given to have a player like Josh Francou out there tonight.

Chaplin needs to work on his upper body strength so he doesn't get pushed under the ball so easily.

Disappointed with the final result but much less so than I was at 3/4 time.

We went from chocolates to boiled lollies after quarter time.
In the first term we played skillful wet weather footy. We won the clearances and the 50-50s and ran the ball well. Rather than kicking blind, scrubby kicks, we tried to go forward with some purpose.
Even though the rain pelted down in the middle 2 quarters, I still think we went too much towards playing traditional "wet weather" style footy and stopped thinking through our ball movement. Too many scrubby kicks that were easily read by the likes of Corey and Bartel.

In the last quarter and through extra-time which we dominated possession-wise, we got some system back and it almost paid dividends.

Re the umps, we got a good ride early because we were first to the contests. Then they got a very good period of frees until midway through the last term when they made the play. I thought the umps were consistent with the kicking in danger rule, but not with the in-the-back and the dragging a player down after he got rid of the ball rules.

Chad Cornes was crucified as was Cassisi by the umpires, but Chad's mouthing off would be a major factor in that. He did not show good disciplined leadership in that respect.

Other observations:
I am convinced that Lade must ruck from the centre for us to make the most of our very good midfield. Brogan is a nothing ruckman. He was outpointed in the taps on numerous occasions by Blake, despite the Cat's inexperience. Brogan in the centre gives us a 50-50 from the stoppages. Lade in there, gives JB and Thommo first look at it. By all means play Broges from the forward line where he can create some scraps, but give Ladey the ruckman's load.

Lower is taking time to adjust to AFL - fair enough, he isn't naturally as clever, cool or quick as some of his teammates. I don't think he is a great matchup at the moment on the likes of Byrnes, Stokes or Djeukerra.

Willits was not played much tonight, but the decision to bring him on for Cockshell in the second phase of extra time stunned me. I thought Cockshell created some opportunities tonight - kicked two goals himself (ok not from big marks or anything but from pressure). Ryan lacks agility. On someone like Scarlett it was suicide to play him in the dying minutes.

Logan was quieter than last week. Thurstans looked better than he has in the past, but like Lower and Lonie coughed up a few easy balls in our back-half with nothing handballs under pressure. Pettigrew is just going nowhere fast at the minute. He is 22 and needs to play like someone who has some experience behind him. Looked better suited when running off the HB line. Up forward he failed to read the ball at all well. Chaplin was pushed around a bit too much by Mooney - still some work to do to get smarter in those goal-square jousts.

Positives:
Damon - take a bow; excellent first half especially when on Gardiner. His best game at AFL level.
Rodan - if he carries that sort of effort through the H&A we will have found a player. There seems no reason why he shouldn't. The skills he showed in the wet to crumb the ball and break clear were very impressive.
Thomson - nice clearance work in the last quarter. Lot of the ball. One who fumbled more than others though in the wet.
Cassisi - there were some very quick to write him off at the end of last year. When played as a run-with HB flanker, he rarely loses his position. Probably our best for four quarters IMO.
Symes - the difference between Symes' assuredness and Lower's panicky, one-dimensional play was noticeable tonight. I suspect it is just a matter of a few more years in the system for Brad. Nick will come good in time. Symes made a couple of clangers but did some great and courageous things as well.
Pearce, JB and Wilbur - extricated the digit when they needed to. More of the same for longer would have had us more competitive in the middle quarters.
Bentley and Logan had inconspicuous games for mine.

The newbies:
each gets a tick tonight.
Cockshell did make a difference and his mobility was very much greater than Willits'. May have taken a big stride in front of Pettigrew and Willits for a forward spot on the basis of tonight.
Gray - really like him. His final pass to Ebert in the dying seconds should have been rewarded. It displayed great poise and vision and class. Tackles well, hunts the ball well in the packs. Will be a threat sooner than later to Motlop and Ebert's places on the forward line.
Krakouer - died out of it a bit after getting some early touches. Outsparked by Djeukerra who was sublime, but not that far away from playing regularly for us. Has pace and seems to make the right decisions. Also tackled well and did ok in the packs.
Boak - Selwood burnt in the second quarter and next to Bartle was Geelong's best player when they were up and running, but Boak did nothing to suggest he won't be very good for us. Played the wet as well as any really. Stood up well in a tackle late in the game. Won some good ball across HB, looked skillful despite the wet, didn't panic. Mark him down for senior action this year.

I'm disappointed but not shattered. Chad Cornes and Ebert cost us the game when it was there to be won. We got the ball forward again well enough to win the game, but butchered some chances. Our youngsters all have talent. Willits and Pettigrew need to salvage something from the preseason if they are to feature in the first few rounds of the real thing.
Brogan's role as our first ruckman needs to be reassessed.
Kane Cornes still has more turnovers than a pastry shop.
