I rate that win. I rate Geelong. I believe they're a forward structure away from being a genuine contender and with Brad ottens in your forward line, although hit and miss, a successful structure could be a few games away.

Although interstate wins are very important for the Eagles and probably the final part of the jigsaw puzzle before being bona fide contenders, development of young players is equally important. If we could define three groups of players from tonight's game, we can pinpoint some real positives:

group 1.

Chick
Wirrpunda
Jones
Glass
Hunter

No frills backline was very good tonight. No frills backlines are good enough to win a flag as long as they are consistent week in, week out. A star FB and CHB to shape the rest of the BL is preferable, but six to 8 guys who can do the job week in, week out is good enough. Glass is consumate, Chick has proven he can nullify some of the best, Jones is hard at it, Hunter has proven consistency without being a star, and Wirra is as good as Joel Smith, Rohan Jones, or Mathew Lappin.

group 2.

Hansen
B Jones
Staker

These guys either stepped up or maintained consistency. All of them showed that if the Eagles can be a true force then they can not only go with them but help them there. Very pleasing.

Group 3.

Cousins
Kerr
Matera
Gardiner

For whatever reason, these players were ineffective tonight. Good to see the Eagles can do it when some stars are missing. Sort of like how the Windies play without Lara as opposed to how they used to play when Greenidge, Haynes, Richardson, and Richards scored low scores. Good teams have depth.

Best positive:

1. Hansen. Class performance in his 8th game. Provided an option and contest all night. It's hard to be an unknown and be a focal point. If his name was Wayne Carey or Jonathon Brown people would be raving about it. The only thing he lacked was the reputation and extra presence that reputation and good performance brings.
2. Embley. Not only a super talent but starting to show some consistency and leadership. great game.

Now we just need to replicate away from home in at least four more matches.

Another 2 guys who I thought were very good tonight: Stenglein (21 Disposals) and Nicoski (17 Disposals).

But yeah, the real story out of tonight is Hansen. Hard to believe he has only played 8 games.

Too many "Yeah, naaah, aaarrrm" for my liking. Shoe in for the Cathy Freeman award though.

Yikes! He's not that bad, surely?

If Hansen can do this again against Freo, i'll be well chuffed with him. :D

I'm really starting to love our backline. Commentators can say what they want about them, but I think they are becoming as much of a key to our success as our midfield.

I don't know whether it's because of who our coach is or what, but there are several guys done there who never shirk the issue and just put their bodies in - Jones, Hunter, Glass and Chick in particular.

The other pleasing aspect is the way that guys like Jones, Nicoski and Hunter link up in the run out of defence with the obviously flashier Wirra type players.

And the best part of it all - the average age of thiose blokes couldn't me much over 22-23

Don't forget Drew.

DON'T FORGET DREW.

i think a big positive from tonights game is the amount of goals we kicked through a "conventional" forward set up, as in kick-mark-set-shot-goal. Usually we have a high proportion of goals scored by guys on the run, or through moments of judd/kerr/sampi magic. tonight seemed very structured, organised and direct, ill have to check out the stats on "goals from set shots" as it was bloody high. the only two running goals i recall were glassys and coxys.

there was also a passage of play where we took the ball from a behind kick out to our forward 50 in 3 kicks, havent seen that in sooo long for us!

encouraging signs all round

The one thing that needs work is turnovers. I think Fletch and Stenglein are great players, but tonight they just kicked one too many straight to a Cat.

Exactly. I get most excited when we get goals from marks and set shots rather than manufacturing goals out of broken plays. Imagine Hansen at CHF and Smith at FF next year? That would be awesome.

Not to mention Waters

Also think our depth is looking great, despite quite a few injuries so far it appears that is going to be hard for the likes of Wooden, R Jones and Atkins to get back into the best 22.

A nice position to be in

Was also watching the Claremont v Peel game and Rosa and Morton were outstanding as well

Yeah got agree with you Ruddiger, the third quarte last five minutes fletch had 2 blatant turnovers and a set shot before siren end was short.
Must say Matera is frustrating to watch.

The reason why Fletch didnt make my votes. Turned it over a few times tonight but he did still play pretty well.

Matera is still finding match fitness. Should be back to his old self soon enough.

I agree. Our backline is probably now our second strongest unit, behind the midfield but in front of our forward line. Glass is IMO one of the very best FB's in the comp and although not really having a proper CHB, between Hunter, Staker and Lynch we get the job done.

Staker is progressing very well and like Lynch can play both ends. Hunter never shirks the issue and is quietly becoming one of our most consistent players.

Banfield and Chick are the more experienced guys but both are still playing fantastic footy and between usually nullify an important opposition player. Then there is Wirrpunda who never really worries about his opponent and just tears up the backline rebounding and setting up play like his life depends on it.

The youngsters in Nicoski of halfback, B.Jones in great form and Waters still to come back in and we have already talked about how good Waters is in previous threads. That's with Wooden on the outside looking in.

Ive been super impressed with our backline and have kept both Adelaide and Geelong to low scores. Of course neither of those teams have a dominant forward line or a dominant tall like a Tredrea, Brown or Riewoldt but I think our backline is up to the challenge and I cant wait to take on a team like Port or St Kilda.

Particularly the Saints with Hamill, Riewoldt, Gehrig, Guerra, Milne....tough opponents and that will really test where our backline is at.

Nah he has to perfect that stupid giggle before he can be considered for that award!

What about McDud?

Can we do something about this tool? Obviously cant go 5 minutes without thinking of McDougall and derives some kind of perverse sexual pleasure from verbally abusing him. This thread isnt even about McDougall.

Yep, I agree. Yakuza has had his say on this subject. If he continues to attempt to derail threads the mods should step in and do something.

If you don't give me a kick I'll take my ball home! SOOK just like McDud!

Yes there definately were some positives to take out of last nights game.

Hansen played BRILLIANT!!! maybe he is the answer to our forward problems

I also thought that Bones played well out of defence last night. What a pick-up this bloke has been

Nicoski was also good coming back form injury.

and to think we have won our first two games of the season without gardy, dougs, cuz, waters and a few others is another great sign.

Just wait till all our injured players return. BRING IT ON!!!

Hansen was obviousbly the big thing out of last night. A fantastic performance.

I think that's somewhat confirmed him as out CHF for a period of time. Depending on how long Gardy is out for it will be very interesting what we do with him.....Hansen could play as a leading player out of CHF, while Gardy sort of just bases himself as the big pack marker in the forward 50 and McDougall playing a traditional FF role.

Seaby seems to be a bit on the outer but i'd like to get him back in there even with all the talls there.....

i don't think Seaby's on the outer at all. Once he recovers from his injury he'll be a certainty in the 22.
