Missed the first half yesterday so I put myself through the pain of watching it just now. The hawks actually played like the hawks of last year, nothing like they have been playing the first 4 weeks. Not sure why this was the case, maybe just a case of knowing they are coming up against our underperforming mob. They can be far better than a 1-4 team though and Cyril single handily was worth about 3 goals on his own.

Masten and Redden were the worst on the ground by some margin. If these two aren't dropped then there is no accountability at this club, the only passable exception is if Gaff is injured so Masten gets a reprieve for team balance but even still I would be against this. Masten gave away two goal scoring opportunities a wayward forward 50 entry and a simple handball which is supposed to be his strength, he lost a couple of ground ball opportunities because he is so soft (Gaff also here) and the only time he decided to go in hard was on Bruest's head 20m out from goal. The only things I remember Redden doing were falling over going for a mark and getting caught htb due to a lack of awareness.

The gameplay was an issue, as others have said the corralling isn't suited to the G as it would be at Domain. For me, the workrate was a bigger problem. They outnumbered us at more contests and then were able to work their way out with handball too easily (corralling wasn't helping here). Too many of our played play soft around the loose balls and our centre bounce work is deplorable. The likes of Redden, Priddis and Sheed don't win enough clean ball to all be playing together and as soon as the ball splills out the likes of Gaff and Masten get beaten for intensity to win the loose ball. Gaff did this really well last week on a couple of occasions which is all the more frustrating.

We have a lot of dumb players who made dumb errors and our footskills were terrible at times and even from our top players like Shuey's turnovers and Kennedy missed set shots. We could've easily been much closer on the scoreboard if we used the ball better. This is a result of our mental demons and soft underbelly against the hawks at the G I feel.

Having said all that, I thought Nelson was excellent and Duggan was lively apart from a couple of average kicks. Barass also stood tall apart from being a tad unlucky on the goal line once. The young fellas were only ones who can hold their heads up really.
Pretty good summary. I had the same thoughts.

Only thing i liked from the game was the Shuey flick up was awsome, i have seen him do it before and would like him to do it more beats bending down to pick the ball up.
One of the best bits of skill you will see all year and I don't recall it even getting a replay.

So Gaff comes out and says we have no mcg hurdle.

Simmo should just stop the players from talking to the media this week. Don't want to hear it Gaff or any player and what they have to say. Just go out there and do what your been saying. Talk is cheap. Don't want to listen to any excuses or talk about it.

Right now we need silence from within the club.

Shut up and perform.
Actions have told the story and cheap talk can not change that.
All clubs have media obligations don't they?

I suppose we could've blanketed that this week, but our club wouldn't dare be so "bold" would it?

Hey guys, I gave it a few days so hopefully all is calm...
Just something I noticed on the weekend, and I believe it impacted your competitiveness. You set up an extra in defence from the first bounce. I assume it was to try and create an overlap, but all it did was expose you guys going the other way.
Is this a normal tactic? It could explain your MCG hoodoo, as it is much wider than Subiaco

Yep only a slight mention from one commentator. Yet Cyril jumps and barley gets a finger to the ball with no chance of marking it and it gets 5 replays.

Instead of silence, I want the club to come out and say, we are all on notice. We will change our gameplan and attitude, there will also be massive changes to the squad come the Freo game.
Campaigners like Redden, Lecca, Wellers, Hill, Pridda (and I do love him but I've had enough) Butler and any other COAB who sucked be replaced, I don't give a **** if we lose.
I want the club to say we are going to put in Mutimer, Parto, Watson etc into the squad to send a clear message to the players FINALLY that poor effort and a poor game will get you dropped.

Oh, and Vale all our brave men and women who fought and died so that we could have our freedoms.

Srs, this club could do with hearing some decent stories of bravery and never give up attitude under adversity from some of the diggers and servicewomen I have met in my time. FFS

Edit : a bit ranty, but IDGAF

Was hard to watch the Hawks game. Harder than the Richmond game.

Started early and it snowballed pretty quick, we had the intent to take the game on and play the corridor early which was good but to often we tried the switch to early or the execution was off and we'd put a team mate into a position where he was outnumbered.

Over reliance on Kennedy inside 50 as well. If his got 2 or more defenders around him than that means there will be a forward free or a mismatch with a defender whose rolled back.

Getting cut up by outside run. You look at the teams we have beaten (North, Saints and Sydney) and they have more of a tendency to be inside heavy and play to our strength but when we played against Richmond and Hawthorn at the MCG (different style of ground) we have been hurt by smaller forwards with speed and outside run.

I don't want to hear a word from the club because it's nothing but white noise

All that matters is what they respond with on field on Saturday in particular but then the following weeks as we play Port (A), Bulldogs, Essendon (A), Giants, Suns (A) leading into the bye

Show some heart and some pride in their performance because it sure as shit wasn't there on Sunday

on simpson, since we're venting here, he really hasn't said anything remotely insightful or challenged his players publicly in any presser over the past 18 months, despite the same obvious issues being raised by the media consistently.

his standard responses:
"we're disappointed..."
"we'll take a look at it during the week..."
"we need to get better..."

I got to go to the Sydney game and saw him warming up an hour before the game. He was out there for a while by himself. LeCras joined him for a bit. No one else came out.

Anyway, every time he wanted to get the ball off the ground, he'd just flick it up with his foot. I was enthralled. He even did a flick up and a few volley type kicks before kicking it out of mid-air, in the right fwd pocket, mind you, and it sailed through the goals. Did not touch it at all with his hands. Kid has serious talent and it's just being wasted without any real decent support around him.

Its in anticipation of a rushed kick or high ball coming in from the opposition, trying to allow a McGovern or Barrass to zone off and take the intercept mark, then rebound quickly to our Fwd 50.

Problem is, our piss weak midfield can't pressure using a zone at the MCG so teams like the Hawks that will hit targets all day given space just chip through it, while our forwards have to put up with being double teamed at the other end with our own rushed entries.

Shame that dumbarse Simpson hasn't been able to recognise this in 3 seasons.

Could you imagine all the wank in the VIC media if it had of been a Dangerfield or Cyril that had used the flick? Would be hearing about it all week.

You know what Monocle, my inlaws give me less room to move than an Eagles player on the ground. I go to work, to get things done, on my own. They turn up, with the dogs, and my day is destroyed...... :)

It has taken me two days to come on here and talk footy

Haven't read the whole thread, but I can't be ****ed with that is heartless team anymore.

Backs to the wall, give in
Not going our way, give in
Getting hard, give in

No heart, no passion, no guts

Only thing i want to hear from the club right now is seeing the axe fall in a couple days when the teams are announced.

Right now they can shut up and just cop the abuse from supporters, AFL fans, and journo's alike.

(a) We are mentally weak this is the third time the Hawks have pissed on us at the MCG and this time they were on the back of two 86 point beltings. For goodness sake Essendon beat the hawks.

(b) Our leaders just do not stand up when it counts and this includes
(1) Josh Kennedy - Missed 4 easy set shots
(2) Lecras - Was not sighted
(3) Hurn - Has a weapon of a kick but does not use it
(4) Darling - Got cheap goals

Only 5 players can hold their head up high - Shuey, Gaff, Barras, Nelson, & McGovern the rest just crapped the bed
