Best 22
Draft Picks: 45, 71, 87, 92
Trades:
#1. Ben Brown for Jack Redpath + Lin Jong
We feel we gain a similarly attributed forward in Redpath, as well as gain a quality mid in Jong.
#2. Sam Durdin for Will Snelling + Aidyn Johnson
We felt a change in environment for Sam would be good for his development, as he has taken a little longer than we would have liked. Multiple clubs showed interest for Sam, but we felt that Port was the best club for him as he could go back home and be surrounded by family and friends to gain more support than he did here in Melbourne. In exchange, we have gain 2 quality youngsters in former SA under 18s captain Will Snelling and slick midfielder Aidyn Johnson. These guys will add great depth to the midfield and will be pushing for senior selection early in 2017.
#3. Pick 32 for Ciaran Byrne + Andrejs Everitt
This is a really good trade for us. Giving up a late 2nd rounder for an up and coming youngster in Byrne and a forward with good goal sense in Everitt, these two will add a lot to our side, in particular Byrne with his run and carry and footskills. We feel we have won this trade by a fair margin as these two players combined will add more than whoever we could draft at 32.
#4. Jarrad Waite for Pick 64
Unfortunately, Jarrad requested a trade to a team that would play finals. The club stated they wouldn't play hardball for him, so pick 64 is a decent return for him
#5. Jamie Macmillan for Sam Collins + Pick 71
Fremantle showed interest in Jamie early on in the piece and after trading out Sam Durdin earlier, the club felt that they needed a young backman. We targeted Sam Collins and we feel he will add a lot to our aging back 6. Good trade for both sides.
#6. Shaun Atley for Jordan Foote
Unfortunately, Shaun requested a trade to Sydney. His leg speed will be sorely missed, but as a result, we were able to secure a young up and coming midfielder in Jordan Foote. Jordan plays predominately inside and will learn a lot from Andrew Swallow, Lin Jong, Shane Edwards etc.
#7. Ben Cunnington + Robbie Tarrant for Pick 9 + Shane Edwards + Mitch Brown
This was the big 3 way trade between North Melbourne, Richmond and Essendon, which saw Dustin Martin move clubs to Essendon. We felt we were able to do extremely well out of this trade, despite losing Ben and Robbie. Pick 9 is a great result and it means that we have 2 selections inside the top 10, while Shane Edwards is a similar type of player to Ben, but has more speed and is able to go forward, while Mitch is able to play at both ends of the ground, which is great for us as we lack some tall forward depth.
#8. Jack Ziebell + Pick 11 for Pick 4
Pick 4 was our target since the start of the trade period. Unfortunately, we had to part ways with Jack and our pick 11 to make this happen, but we feel we can get the best talent into our club with the higher pick
#9. Ben Jacobs for Henry Schade
This is a depth for depth trade with Gold Coast. Ben wasnt going to get game time here at North and Gold Coast showed interest. We were able to get a young and more developed KPD in Henry Schade, who will be able to develop and learn a lot from Lachie Hansen, Scott Thompson.
#10. Pick 33 + 2017 2nd for David Swallow + 2017 3rd
We feel we got an absolute bargain here, essentially grabbing Swallow for a 2nd round pick. Dave will add some much needed class and speed to the midfield
#11. Pick 64 for Jake Barrett
Jake is a very good player who is looking for opportunities at a different club. We feel we can give him those opportunities here at North. Pick 64 wasnt a big price to pay for him either
#12. Pick 9, Trent Dumont, Luke McDonald, Lachlan Hansen for Harrison Wigg, Paul Seedsman, Picks 26, 37, 45
We may have given up a little too much here but we got what we needed in outside speed through the forms of Wigg and Seedsman. getting 3 middle draft picks was also good. Paul comes straight into our best 22, while Harrison Wigg will be on the verge.
#13. Pick 26 for Ryan Schoenmakers
This was part of the trade to get Jack Newnes to Hawthorn. We have got a very good swingman in Schoenmakers and he will form a lethal combination with Mason Wood, Jack Redpath and Majak Daw up forward. He can also play in defence and gives us the flexibility to swing him down back with Mitch Brown.
#14. Picks 4 and 37 for Angus Brayshaw and Christian Salem.
We feel we may have got the better of this deal, with two very good young players coming into our side in Brayshaw and Salem. Brayshaw fills an immediate need in our midfield, while Salem slots onto half back with his elite kicking skills and decision making. Melbourne were compensated with a top 5 pick and another 2nd round pick.
