Sam Iles
Details:
Club: Clarence/Tassie Mariners/Tassie Devils VFL List
DOB: 19 June 1987 Hgt: 181cm Wgt: 80kg
Position: Midfielder/Half Back Flank
Natural Foot: Right
Honours:
Tasmanian U18 representative 2004 and 2005
2005 AFL Draft Camp
Stats:
2005 AFL U18 Championships: 3 games, 1 goal, averaged 13.3 PPG
Background:
He represented Tasmania at the 2004 National Carnival, and played some reasonable footy. Returned to the Mariners side this year as a top age player, playing his best game midweek against NSW in Geelong. He spent a week at Sydney after championships and was added to the Tasmanian Devils VFL list - making his VFL debut in Round 19 against Coburg, where he was named among the Devils best players.
Strengths:
- Good composure, and plays with a touch of confidence, smart player
- Moves well in congestion
- Has played senior footy in Tasmania’s Southern League for Clarence and has played VFL for the Tasmania Devils
Weaknesses:
- Disposal at times is ordinary. Just as a note on this, this does not mean he has bad disposal, it means on rare occasion it falters, while most of the time it is good. He took kick ins for Tassie in the VFL, so his kicking is generally good.
Footydraft.com comment: Certainly is one player who impressed during the carnival with his natural footy smarts. Is a decent enough size for that small defender/midfield role at the next level, and his good VFL form can only assist his draft prospects. Is worthy of being selected, probably around the 25 mark onwards
Alan Toovey
Details:
Club: Aquinas/Claremont
DOB: 23 March 1987 Hgt: 188cm Wgt: 79kg
Position: Defender
Natural Foot: Left
Honours:
WA Under 15s 2002
WA Under 16s 2003
AIS/AFL Academy 2003
Western Australia U18s 2004 & 2005
WAFL Colts Team Of The Year 2004
All Australian U18 2004
AFL Draft Camp 2004
WA Under 18s Vice Captain 2005
AFL Draft Camp 2005
2004 WAFL Stats:
Colts: 6 games, 0 goals, 14.0 PPG
Background: Toovey completed his schooling at Aquinas last year where he captained the team to a runner up position, only behind the highly regarded Trinity team of 2004. He often played in the ruck for Aquinas highlighting his athleticism. Toovey made All Australian in 2004 playing from the backline and using his run to break lines. This year Toovey spent time in the Colts after playing in a couple of pre season league games on the wing. The strong Claremont league side proved hard to break into and he did not get given opportunities until the later rounds. Eventually Toovey made his league debut after a couple of good performances in the reserves grade and didn’t look back from there holding down the full back position on one of the best full forwards against the Swans in the First Semi Final. Didn’t have a great carnival in 2005 was given a bit of a lesson by a bigger bodied Beau Dowler. He was named best on ground in the WA State 18s vs State 20s earlier this year.
Strengths:
- Versatile Defender
- Not afraid to put his head over the ball
- Experienced league footy and quality forwards
- Seems to play well against older opposition (04 championships, WAFL League, 20’s Match)
- reads the play very well, is an excellent mark and usually makes good decisions.
- He has a good turn of pace and will be disciplined when sticking to his man.
Weaknesses:
- Size may not be big enough to play Full Back in the AFL
- Overlooked last year, despite going to draft camp
- Never seems to really dominate a game
Footydraft.com Verdict: Difficult to predict given he was not picked up last year when he had such a good season. He has still has had a great finish to this season though and could be a real steal late in the draft.
Daniel Nicholls
Details:
Club: Rowville/Dandenong Stingrays
DOB: 2 March 1987 Hgt: 176cm Wgt:70kg
Position: Midfielder
Natural Foot: Left
Honours:
- Vic Metro U18 Squad 2005
- State Screening Tests 2005
- 2005 TAC Cup Team of the Year (interchange)
Statistics:
2004 TAC Cup 18 games, 3 goals, average 15.8 PPG, 7 times in best
2005 U18 Championships: 3 games, 0 goals, average 16.3 PPG
2005 TAC Cup: 17 games, 17 goals, average 24.9 PPG, 9 times in best
Awards:
TAC Cup Morrish Medal: 6 votes
TAC Cup Coaches award: 8 votes
Background:
Left footed wingman who was in his top age year at the Stingrays. Best known for his blistering pace, getting the ball and bolting away. Will stick his head over the ball and has very tidy skills. Was among the Vic Metro early squads this season and held his spot in the side for the carnival. Had a good season at the Stingrays finishing 7th in their best and fairest and was named among their best in the Grand Final. His performance in the competition was acknowledged at Morrish Medal night with a spot in the TAC Cup Team of the Year. Tested well in the beep test at Victorian Screening.
Strengths:
- foot skills on his left foot are good
- speed
- inside player
Weaknesses:
- height/weight for AFL footy
- kicked 17.18 this season – worse than 50% conversion? Quite well skilled generally so what happens in front of goal? Again, this only applies to his kicking on goal - I might remind you that Bucks has kicked more behinds than goals 6 out of his 13 seasons in the league.
Shannon Cox
Details:
Club: Kojonup/South Fremantle
DOB: 7 March 1986 Hgt: 187cm Wgt: 89kg
Position: Centre Half Forward
Natural Foot: Right
Honours:
Western Australia 2004
Forward Pocket in WAFL Colts Team of the Year 2004
National Draft Camp 2004
2004 WAFL Stats:
Colts: 13 games, 21 goals, 12.2 PPG
Strengths: Cox is a strong forward who can also be used for spells in the ruck, although he is too short to play that role at AFL level. From the country town of Kojonup, he only moved to Perth this year to concentrate on his football.
Shannon is very strong in the marking contest and can take a number of contested marks. He moves surprisingly well for his size and could even be played further up the ground if he lost some weight.
Weaknesses: Awkward in between size and needs to improve his fitness. Awkward kicking style that means set shots are no certainty.
Footydraft.com comment: Definitely worth a look with a late draft pick, Cox will require a fair bit of work but there is plenty to work with and he could be a surprise packet if he gets in shape. As a note on this, apparently he has gotten in shape since then and been used up the field a bit more. He was compared to Mark Williams (from Hawthorn) by one coach.
