I know it's difficult enough administration wise with six sides, no wonder Old Xavs and SKOB employ people to do this, running 10 plus teams is a genuine logistical nightmare.
I understand the challenges of having a lot of teams - absolutely - but try ringing around EVERY week to fill a twos team or having to find people to do field, boundary and goal umpiring for nearly all your teams because you are a divisional club.

I get the feeling our committee might say "give us the logistical nightmare and cash to pay for people to do it any day of the week" 😊

I know how it feels to be in D grade, we’ve been down there or below for most of our clubs history. Only a few years ago people took great delight in us being in B grade for a decade!

I can tell you, I feel for you in D1, you can barely get anyone to goal umpire or boundary umpire for our thirds or reserves or even under 19s, so I couldn't imagine having to do that for the seniors as well. Local football administration is an important, but very time consuming / overwhelming (at times) task that's for sure.

Unfortunately MR P we don't have the the same 'opportunity' that St Kevs have been able to build upon, work very hard to develop and now bare the fruits of all that work to see them as a powerhouse club with some 10 sides. That 'opportunity' to build something via a school relationship does not exist for many within the divisions, so it's finding other ways to survive, let alone grow, that we must explore. In the mean time, I dream of the days where we could get stuck in B grade for 10 years! :)

CoC.

It is not a problem solely for Divisional Clubs. It is a perenial problem for a lot of clubs (A included) I know mine scratches at times to get "helpers".
Parents watching their boys just out of school seem to be thinner on the ground than previous times. I know our Pres has run "water"...

Our President loves running water, but I agree regarding FF's on helpers, I try and help out where I can around the club, but it seems that our committee is rather small in number and plenty has been left for far too few to do. Running a footy club now is no small task that's for sure.

A lot relies on culture and buy in, some clubs have it, others don't. It's like injured players, most should still come, help out in some capacity, but most don't even bother showing up if they're injured.

I recall a few years ago at a VAFA club presentation day that West Brunswick had some sort of roster whereby senior players from their men's side would go and walk water for their thirds or women's team, reserves players would do boundary umpiring for other teams etc and it seems to work well for them they said. Their president even said they canned their male thirds sides a few years back due to the thirds players not helping out enough around the club and just treating it as a transaction where they'd play and leave. If only every club had that level of buy in!

Ditto at my Club, same for most Clubs l would imagine.
The volunteer is a dying breed in society unfortunately. Can't pay everyone to do these jobs, where would the $$ come from.
I see it as a real issue going forward. Have stated on here before.

That whisper that Ivanhoe Amateurs is off to NFNL is back again. One thing the Northerners do well is finding umpires for all their games, rather than push it to clubs.

Amazing how many injured players bring a dog these days so they can't do anything

I recently read a report commissioned by LSV with interesting findings around volunteerism, and basically the more wealthy an area the less people are willing to volunteer.. Lower socio economic areas people feel that they can’t afford to contribute financially so are willing to volunteer time, where higher socio they are used to paying for someone else to do it..

My observations in junior footy are the exact opposite....the well heeled areas have plenty of people doing roles .... the struggling demographics are missing umpires, team managers etc.....people doing two roles...This is only footy but if you look at struggling areas their footy clubs are out on their feet...its the Balwyns of the world that are well run and well supported.

I think people are far more invested in their children and their sport as kids, it seems now once they become adults and play seniors or even under 19s there is a drop off in parent help, especially from what I've seen. It probably doesn't help private schools in the APS and AGS basically have parents as spectators and the kids are coached by former students getting paid to do it or at the top end of APS footy, you have ex AFL coaches / legends coaching! Compare that to playing under 19s at a VAFA club where parents are expected to run the boundary and goal umpire, very different kettle of fish there.
