Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

Plan B lost us a grand final by 119 points.

We need a key forward.

Credit where it's due, Surj up forward, Rodan, Ebert in the midfield and the spray he gave the players, good stuff.

Indeed, and playing JT in the ruck for an extended period, where he massacred them. :thumbsu:

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

According to the coaches what we saw in the last 3 quarters was plan A but the players were winning the ball. i dont know what to believe anymore i still cant get my head around the tranformation in play after quarter time.

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

With the changes he made on the weekend salter fans should have a bit of hope for a forward line gig

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

It started when we started running hard to
a) shut down the crows space (esp when they were switching) and
b) support team mates,
c) get the ball!

...rather than
a) jogging nonchalantly 15m behind any random opponent,
b) walking! or
c) standing still in some 'zone' or
d) waiting for 'someone else to do it'.

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

Logic would suggest that the quarter time bake was a result of the players not playing to instruction.

It seemed like Matty was challenging them to actually do 100% as he asks.

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

Any gameplan will look like crap when players make poor decisions and continually turn over the ball within 3 possessions.

As PowerKat posted once we started working hard to present in numbers and hence keep possession of the ball the game plan looked much better.

With a big strong bodied key forward like the top teams have to aim at it will look even better (although it wasn't helped by phantom frees paid against Cornes and Motlop simply because they are Cornes and Motlop).

I still think the crows helped in their mad rush to get numbers way back behind the ball into defence and giving up the middle ground whenever we threatened rather than pressing up and matching our numbers in zones around the ground. Other teams will press up and that will be another test.

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

Apparently the biggest spray at 1/4 time came not from Primus - but from one junkyard dog who tore strips off D.Rodan for his 0 possession effort in the first stanza.

The rest is history...

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

Realistically we are a win off of what I thought we would be, two of those losses we looked hapless but it isn't like Geelong and Collingwood aren't doing it to other teams.

So in effect the showdown performances says Matty P is tredding in the right direction. The next 6 games will provide us with the true reflection of where we are going as personally they are all winable games. It's a matter of how badly our boys wanna win.

Hats off for Matty sticking with O'Shea also, I thought he was top class on Saturday.

Also losing Cassisi and Kornes showed us we have been playing too many taggers.

Another Matt Thomas has imporved but his decision making is still a worry, but well done.

Primus gets Luke Darcy's tick of approval

Born leader
PORT Adelaide fans will find it difficult to extract anything positive out of becoming the first side to lose to Gold Coast last Saturday. But Matthew Primus' honest, straightforward approach in the post-game press conference has the potential to be club defining.

He said: "To our supporters and sponsors, we apologise for that and we will keep delving away to try and produce 22 players that want to compete on a weekly basis. We have to delve really deep into the psyche of our club to understand why we produce these kinds of results."

....

The Port Adelaide Magpies were hated with an intensity beyond anything I have ever seen. The old Port fans would have loved and embraced Matthew Primus' ruthless approach as coach; in fact, despite the challenges ahead, they may well have found the perfect man for the job.

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

Primus has said everything right so far IMO. Next step is to put that into action. Selection has been a bit questionable, but I doubt he wants to sabotage his own chances. With that said, if he doesn't get rid of the deadwood at the end of the season I'll be right of his wagon.

His comments on PTV today (29-Apr) are on the money too. Especially the stuff about "how we go about it" rather than just getting the 4 points. This shows to me that he is much more about re-building the game plan and style of football that we play to be able to take us somewhere - rather than just doing everything he can in the short term to notch another win.

This possibly explains some of the selection changes and the persistance with certain younger players (O'Shea and Pittard in particular) which I am all for. Dropping senior players also shows that he is setting them the challenge and sending a message - do as told and perform as expected otherwise you are dispensible. Those that respond will stay I imagine, those that continue down the same path are headed for permanency in the SANFL or trade-bait.

I expect to see a turnover of about 12 players (or more) on our list at the end of the season, those numbers (greter than 1 in 4) would make most players uncertain about there future, not just at the club but at the highest level.

I hope he's had the players in groups of 4, then told them in no uncertain terms that one or more from each group is unlikely to be playing for the club next year ... do you want that to be you?

Interesting theory. The only senior player that seems to have failed this litmus test so far is Pearce, but he can still redeem himself if he pulls his finger out and decides he still wants to play for the club.

FWIW I still have faith in Primus, despite the puzzling selection decision on Surjan. Maybe he is rocking the boat to test the players mental strength, maybe I'm clutching at straws. Primus has been direct, focused and calculating. He may even be a stealth assassin behind closed doors (Yes I'm a Tenchu fan).

"22 players that want to compete on a weekly basis" is damning thing to say as head coach. Any player with an ounce of intelligence would be hearing alarm bells, very loud alarm bells.

Kornes is yet to prove himself. Yes, he had a blinder playing for the Eagles Under 14s - but let's wait see what happens back in the big time.

Salopek just had his head put on the chopping block.

Surjan has only narrowly avoided it.

Rodan has made his way up the line pretty quick smart.

Cornes and Motlop have responded reasonably well so far after making there way back in.

Westhoff seems to have responded without the need to be dropped - but it's early days yet.

D Stewart has already seen what life might be like outside of the AFL. I imagine Hitchcock will get a taste of that soon if he doesn't pull his finger out.

It's becoming more obvious that Primus is cycling through them to see who has the intestinal fortitude to make it - at the same time giving others a chance to step up. The message is becoming pretty clear.

Once Dom and Schulz (and now Boak) are back and players like Salter and Moore and Butcher and Banner (and possibly Danny Meyer and Marlon Motlop) are pressing for selection ... I think we'll see a little more experimenting this year to sort out the wheat from the chaf.

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

In addition, while the 'senior' players are busy getting their heads out of their backsides, it's looming likely that Pittard and O'Shea will have ~40 games under their belt by the end of the season. Hopefully Jacobs, Moore and Butcher follow suit.

This is the kind of fast track development we need.

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

What has happened to the style we played in the last 7 games last year? It was obvious we played tanking teams and we should have also.

It's clear we are tanking with the way we are playing and the players selected!

I wanted Scott, but i think we need to get someone very experienced, I hope our $$$$ issues fixes itself this year so we can push for Roo's, Malthouse etc etc

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

I wanted Primus to get the job at the end of last year.

I was very very wrong. I have zero faith in him. I get embarrassed when I even think about the fact that he is our coach.

Wasn't happy at the time, thought it was a 'jobs for the boys' from the same mob that brought us Choco's contract extension.

The whole process is about as believable as the two amigos in Canberra. It reeks of the result being decided, now lets have a drawn out 'process' that looks like justifying it.

I get Port are at or near the bottom of pretty much everyone's list of who they'd like to coach, but seriously, there'd still be plenty of good assistants who'd be happy to be head coach here for 2 - 5 years as a stepping stone to somewhere else if they do a good job. Or start here as assistants. At the end of this year I don't want any of our current coaches still around - or Rhode. The fish rots from the head. When will the club bite the bullet and admit this means more then Choco being replaced by an assistant who hadn't left the club in 13 years since arriving to get a broader experience?

Re: Primus - is the gloss wearing off already

I never wanted him.

I have nothing against Primus. But I was adamant at the time that we needed a broom swept through the place. Nothing has happened that would make me rethink those thoughts.

Tony Shaw.

Much-loved club stalwart, amazing leadership and inspirational communicator, ordained as a future coach the minute he retired, apprenticeship in-house under Premiership coach Leigh Matthews instead of learning externally.

Ended well.
