Feck...Waverly was down the road from me...
Getting blasted by the winning oppo's car horns when I walked home in the dark...contributing to my hearing loss...
Those were the days!

I'm going to raise a theory that may seem a little out there, but could also explain a little as to why our game plan may not be being executed as well as we'd like.

Right now our training ground is smaller than MCG size at 159m x 124m, the MCG is 173m x 148m significantly larger in size and about the same size as Marvel. We all talk about how our game plan looks slow and we don't look for space in our F50 and instead just bomb it in on top of their heads.

Now if you're training on a small ground day after day practising a game plan and having it becoming 2nd nature so to speak, when you're in a game you're going to go with what you've been trained in automatically without thinking. All through the preseason we heard Yze mention that he wanted the players to train at full speed like they're in a game situation, so that it becomes automatic execution for the players, so it only follows that when we get into a game we're playing in a way that is 2nd nature. He also mentions that he wants us to play with more speed and to take the game on. Now if we're unable to train that way fully, then how can we execute it fully in games.

So when you're a forward who trains inside a small F50 area where leading space is crowded and you're often running into congestion, you'll find it hard to learn when and where to lead that becomes second nature, when you're a midfielder playing on a smaller ground, you're going to look to dump kick it quickly to get it inside F50 quickly because there is much less space to work in for to get clean clearances.

Now I know it sounds a bit out there, but I'm fairly sure that every other club has a training venue that is MCG size at minimum, and why we've been so keen to get our own venue upgraded so that we can train daily on a full size ground, which would mean that come game day execution of the game plan that becomes 2nd nature at training will mean better execution on game day.

I just don't think we have the players right now to execute any type of game plan irrespective of ground size. We can play 1 good quarter in 4 and usually one of those quarters we don't play, it's like we haven't even taken the field at all.

Ground size isn't one of the reasons why we are so bad atm.

Disagree about the players, agree that we can't play consistently across games.

There is an old saying in footy, train as you play and play as you train.

If we can't train the game plan the way it needs to be executed then it would make sense that we can't execute it in games.

I'd just like us to practice set shot kicking so stick us on a cow paddock and as long as it's got 4 goal posts we will improve, unfortunately it seems the club doesn't take our issues in front of goals seriously.

How did that same practice ground go 2017-20

Respectfully I disagree.

If anything, working day to day in a more confined ground setting should mean our players can execute key skills in tighter pockets of space and then come game day, enjoy the wider dimensions of the G and easily execute.
It should also mean our forwards would enjoy leading up to more space on gameday.

Geelong for example train day to day at a very narrow ground but have a good track record at the G.

Different game plan back then

Not really, when doing match simulation forwards/defenders coming into the square would close space much quicker than they would on bigger grounds, as such our mids would be forced to bang it on the boot quickly so they don't get shut down.

As for the forwards they have a lack of space which would explain why when they line up before the centre ball up, they're often quite close to each other and not really spaced out to provide space, because they would be used to seeing each other a certain distance apart at training so sub consciously would line up with the same sort of spacing as they do at training as that would look normal to them.

As for Geelong thay also train at Deakin University which would be more inline with a normal ovals dimensions as opposed to the confines of their home ground.

Surely we lock Waverley up now for 18 months and move there from monday. Don't even have to tell Serpell, keep him far away from there
the cfl for sure prefer melbourne using it

We can only hope. Absolutely shocking design that thing is. How that layout got given the green light is beyond me.
It’s actually a depiction of a crocodile
