Last I remember, that was capped at $10k.

If he’s earning $25k + another job, he’ll be taxed on the whole amount.
How about we be happy for the young bloke and that he’s getting looked after and just don’t worry about if he’s paying tax or not. I can tell you no one pays tax down-south in country leaves

yeah, maybe in la la land where he tells them about the envelope full of cash he gets for playing country footy each week

in the real world, he takes the cash and doesn't pay tax like everyone else!

Hey, back up a minute and look to the op I first replied to and why.

Google on him as far as I’m concerned, I was pointing out he’s probably on a better wicket doing this, then someone else brought up the tax department, etc. I just replied in regards to my past experience.

Palmy have just announcing a few more quality signings…

Can OLeary - a midfielder from Barwon heads who is highly regarded

Brad Stafford - a forward from Mount Gambier SA

And 2017 premiership player Brad McDonald is back.

Not sure if we will be able to match Broady and Lab but should be more than competitive with a bit more experience injected following a very youthful team last year

Correct! That is what is at the moment. As I mentioned earlier please forget the cash and salary cap stuff it’s pretty uncontrollable. If you have 15 to 20 points running around in the 2nds snd they are happy to stay you will be competitive at least if not contending!

Pretty sure Boston as a mature age carpenter or whatever is not on 500 bucks a week! Its bloody smart the a grade vic amateurs have doing this for 50 years!

hardly been a secret he signed there has it?

Lives around the corner from Morningside so decent trip down the coast a couple of times a week for the year.

I know he had offers from Brisbane Clubs between $20-$25K so not sure what Labrador dished up.

Definitely would have 2 players soaking up 50-60% of salary cap at a minimum you would think?

The move of young Dan Lanthois from Maroochydore to Grange hasn't been mentioned yet, but to me this is a big win which came completely out of the blue.

Apparently Dan is moving from the SC to Brisbane to start Uni and will be living less than 2km from Hickey Park, hence him signing with us.

In past years you could almost guarantee that a talented kid like him coming out of the Academy would have signed with Morningside, or at least not with Grange, so it looks like our recruiting drive might be showing some results before the season even starts.

I've always rated Lanthois highly, as Maroochydore obviously did, and he'll only carry 2 points as an U20 recruit.
Apparently he was a bit put out that he wasn't going to be allowed to train with Roos once he signed and ended up moving to Brisbane.... Not sure if he quite understood the lay of the land there... :)

Having a fair bit of experience with hosting AFLW games for the Lions, including the very first game at Grange which drew a 4.5k crowd, I suspect the lower end of your gross revenue estimate is closer to the mark, plus the host has to split any profit with the Lions on a 50/50 basis.

I'm sure Maroochydore got a good return on the day, but it takes a lot of effort and manpower from the host club to put these games on and late game cancellations for Covid reasons are incredibly disruptive and potentially expensive.

There are a few good reasons why Grange passed up the opportunity to continue hosting the AFLW games, we're happy to be out of it despite the fact that they definitely generate profit, but Maroochydore might have a different/better experience than we did.
Yes - you have explained that pretty well Judge. And spot on, late changes to fixtures have been really annoying.

I agree with what you say about the ground maintenance costs, as this is the primary reason why Grange decided to host Lions AFLW games.

The BCC would kick in a large sum each summer to upgrade the ground surface at Hickey Park so that it met the required standard for AFLW, but this meant that our seniors couldn't train there until mid-February each year.

When the BCC couldn't or wouldn't meet our deadline for a similar contribution last year, which would have allowed the work to be done before our seniors started pre-season training in mid-November, we decided to pull the pin.

Grange then had to pay $40k of its own money for ground improvement/maintenance works between September - November 2021, it was just lucky that for once we could actually afford to do it. There's no way that would or could have happened in previous years, and only time will tell whether we can keep it going.

I'm certain that all of the other Brisbane-based clubs are in the same situation, bar Aspley, and it's definitely a major disadvantage.
There's a fee associated with council looking after your grounds - its not done out of the goodness of council hearts!

Really all it shows is that there is structural inequity, in addition to the anecdotal problem of any good player from SA or Vic wanting a sea change to play footy will go FNQ, GC or SC - Brisbane aint that appealing.

Brisbane also has a much higher population, so more talent to pick from.

End of the day though, a $70k headstart is a big leg up when you have natural advantages in recruitment to begin with.
It's amazing Noosa finished on the bottom of the ladder with that logic Miller... :)

Certainly a big loss and one of the premier players in the QAFL for sure. Not AFL standard IMO he’s undersized and not athletic enough for that standard.

Not sure he’d get a game for Southport even tbh, a couple better ahead of him but would probably be good enough to get a gig somewhere in one of SANFL WAFL VFL
he was as good as Jed Turner when Jed made the move south premier from the Roos. But as we all know it takes more than just ability to play AFL football. Not sure a Browning blind spot at all - he would have known Simmo was happy running around with mates at local level.

Miller ,,
that comp has a salary cap of around 80k , its a small town of 1000 population, most players being local ,, it seems a strange decision by the club to recruit a fifo guy for 10 games . The club finished 2nd last in 2021 with 2 wins 8 losses before covid shut the season ,, also seems strange for Simpson to choose this club to go to unless there are connections of some kind..
Filo's dad the coach I believe or associated with the club. There is genuine family reasons why the decision has been made and its not footy or $$ related. And Simmo works with Filo up here.

You don’t pay tax on it as it’s classed as a hobbie. Flights will be covered as well so 25k cash for the year is worth about 40k in a job so that’s a nice little extra income
Not sure footy gets classed as a hobby - umpiring can. if you wanted to qutoe an ABN I'm sure you could sort your tax out later if the ATO wanted you to. On the other hand you can claim all your expenses as well. :)

Think a couple of farmers had a cracking season and decided that they weren't happy with where the club sat. Mind you will be the worst stadard of footy either bloke has played for a fair while - thats not necessarily easy to get used to.
